'Bad Romance,' 'Single Ladies,' And 9 Other RIDICULOUS Songs Played On A Bell Tower (VIDEOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 8/30/10   Updated: 5/25/11

Ding-Dong, Ding-Dong, is it just us or does the sound of a bell tower bring you back to your co-ed days? Without knowing exactly how a carillon works, we do know that the bells typically produce haunting and beautiful reminders of what time it is, as well as vaguely religious tunes. But it turns out, if you listen closely enough, you might just catch the carillonneur rockin' out to a more contemporary tune. You haven't truly lived until you've walked to class to a soundtrack of "Single Ladies" echoing across the quad. Enjoy the best versions of popular songs played on a bell tower and vote for your favorite!

Sorry..the elevator music version of Whiter Shade of Pale wins hands down as the most presentation of a song which should not be covered in that genre..

The Harry Potter theme is actually quite fitting. I was wondering how many of them are actually played vs. MIDI files.

That's not "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. It's "Still Alive," by Jonathan Coulter, the end theme from Portal.

Thank you for letting me know I'm not the only one bothered by this being mislabeled. Even my husband, a non-gamer, recognized it as 'the theme from that game you played on your birthday last year'

Harry Potter started out well, but then seemed to get scrambled. I don't know anything about this intsrument. Is it missing some notes?

Props to Flagler! If you are ever in St Augustine tour the campus, by far the best thing there.

I won't mention the town in IL I live in but ,,, I live close to the bell tower and when first was built
they went nuts with all the show tunes- until 11 pm every -night
One day they decided to mix it up and came up with a melody of the most offensive Southern songs ever written- very racist
I only heard it once- I guess somebody figured out it was a very bad melody
So, they switched back to "sound of Music:"
Fiddler on the Roof. over and over and over again.

At Dartmouth College the bells currently run via wireless access. An iMac computer in the tower runs custom-designed software that a graduate student in electro-acoustic music programs.

Bells ring the time on the hour and half hour. Songs are played three times a day - the alma mater at 6pm, and varying pieces during intervals between classes. Songs can be requested by blitzing "xxx". Requests aren't guaranteed, but are most welcome. If you are requesting a song that is already in the song database, it takes a day or two to program it. Songs can be scheduled for any time except on the hour.

Some current favorites:

Barbie Girl, My Old Kentucky Home, Pomp and Circumstance, Tired of Being Alone, Happy Birthday, Hey Jude, Hi Ho Hi Ho, In Your Eyes, Indiana Jones Theme, Jeopardy Theme, Lean on Me, Lullabye, Maria, Smurfs, Stand by Me, Yellow Submarine, You are My Sunshine, Bright Sunshiney Day, Feeling Groovy

Dartmouth College is one of the last few places that still uses real bells instead of recordings or synthesizers. Bells are turned each year so that the hammers don't wear out the same spot on each bell, and we can be guaranteed the enjoyment of these real bells for years to come.

Let It Be sort of works thanks to the song's spiritual theme--which must have driven John mad; being atheist myself, I still love the song.

I once heard a muzak version of Inagodadavida in an elevator.

Yea? Well, a number of years ago, I worked in an all night grocery, and to this day, swear I heard the Muzak version of Stairway to Heaven...

Tgey're all great but if I had to choose one, it would be "The Entertainer".
Very recognizable and up beat. If I heard that coming out of our local church steeples, I would stop just to listen
