Spain Breaks Up Male-Prostitute Trafficking Gang

Spanish police say that for the first time they have broken up a human-trafficking gang that brought men to the country to worMembers of a human trafficking ring provided the male prostitutes with Viagra and other stimulants.

MADRID — Spanish police say that for the first time they have broken up a human-trafficking gang that brought men to the country to work as prostitutes, providing them with Viagra, cocaine and other stimulant drugs to be available for sex with other men 24 hours a day.

Authorities arrested 14 people, mainly Brazilians, on suspicion of running the organization and another 17 alleged prostitutes for being in Spain illegally, the National Police said in a statement Tuesday.

Police inspector Jose Nieto said the case involving the Brazilians was the first in which Spanish authorities dismantled a ring in which traffickers brought in men, rather than women, to toil as sex workers.

The victims, men in their 20s and estimated to number between 60 and 80, were mainly recruited in northern Brazil and saddled with debts of up to euro4,000 ($5,000) as the cost of bringing them to Spain.

Some were duped into thinking legitimate jobs awaited them as go-go dancers or models; others knew they would be working in the sex industry, but not that they had to be prepared for sex around the clock and would be moved from one province to another depending on demand for their services, Nieto told a news conference.

The men had to give half their earnings to the gang, and pay for rent and food in the apartments where they worked.

"If the men complained or caused any kind of problem, the gang leaders would threaten them, even with death," the police statement said.

The arrests were made in recent weeks and the alleged ringleader is a Brazilian based in Palma on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca.

Besides Viagra and cocaine, the men were given marijuana and the club scene drug known as 'poppers', the police statement said.

Sex is a multibillion-dollar industry in Spain, with brothels staffed mainly by poor immigrant women from Latin America, Africa and eastern Europe lining highways just about everywhere and respectable daily newspapers brimming with ads from people selling their bodies. Prostitution falls in legal limbo: it is not regulated, although pimping is a crime.

Why don't we figure out where these people are being recruited, identify the types of media that might actually get through to them (billboards in their language, radio ads, announcements in the airports if they're being flown in, etc) and run constant "Watch out for this mess!" ads? The main point of confusion with the victims seems to be that they don't understand the laws in the countries in which they wind up. It's one thing for a victim to end up in the UAE and be terrified - they should be - but a victim who ends up in Europe or the US can find help. They probably just assume that there's no more help available there than in the crapholes they came from, but it's not true.

Go go dancers and models. This sounds to me like were not talking about "male" prostitutes, but transgender females.

I love how they make poppers sound all sinister. It's an inhalant that's about as wild as a shot of brandy.

Except that a shot of brandy doesn't give ya asphyxia, arrhythmias, cardiovascular depression, carbon monoxide poisoning, hepatorenal toxicity, methemoglobinemia, neurologic dysfunction, mucosal, pulmonary, skin irritation and facial dermatitis.
And beware of ur adductor muscle :P

Yeah it's really cool that you can copy and paste from a Wikipedia article, but you'll notice that all those result from "acute intake" of poppers. Much like cirrhosis and liver cancer can result from "acute intake" of brandy.

The exploitation of innocents for prostitution should be reason enough to legalise it in order to protect the victims of the current system. I can't begin to imagine the horrors suffered by the victims. When I think of all the children, women, and men living their lives as sex slaves, their bodies violated against their will, not being able to enjoy the simple freedoms we enjoy each day, it just breaks my heart. Why aren't we doing more to help? How can this go on without anyone noticing? What can we do to help?

Legalize prostitution and regulate it like they do in Holland. It's time America left the 19th century behind.

However, this didn't take place in America. It took place in Spain, and "hold on to your hat," prostitution is not illegal in Spain. Pimping is illegal, and obviously human trafficking. The issue of these fellows being in Spain illegally is a separate issue from prostitution. Of course, for someone to dupe them and force them into prostitution is illegal. BTW, I think the proper terminology is that prostitution in Spain is not illegal as opposed to saying that it is legal like in Holland. Technically, it amounts to the same thing. However, one way of looking at it is that there is no law against, however it's not like they are trying to promote it.

slavery and forced prostitution needs to be tackled internationally - this problem is increasing, one way is for the legalisation of prostitution coupled with the protection and education of the sex-workers. however much laws are brought in to tackle the selling of sex it will always exist

Legalizing prostitution is obviously a nightmare, but it should be decriminalized for the prostitutes.

What is so obvious in your nightmare? I live in Nevada, which has legalized prostitution in the less populated counties. I haven't heard the nightmares. In fact, quite the opposite. No AIDS, no pimps, no murders or beatings or robberies. I admit, I'm not fully informed on the issue, but I do watch the news. Not even people like Sharron Angle take on this issue as an obvious way to attack liberal laws. I'm interested in what I am missing that is so obvious.

Spain is full of EMPTY Catholic churches. Spain has a much lower Church attendance rate than, say, the US.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/rel_chu_att-religion-church-attendance

Spain has legalized abortion rights, divorce (as opposed to other supposedly Catholic countries), and gay (full) marriage (including adoption)

Our Prime Minister is a proud Atheist (try trat in the US). So no, Spain is not by any stretch of the imagination one of the world's most "catholic-church infested societies"

http://english.martinvarsavsky.net/general/what-happens-when-a-country-gives-up-religion-as-spain-shows-nothing-much.html

Try again.
