Voters Lean Republican Poll
Voters Leaning Republican On Economy, Terrorism, Other Hot Button Issues (POLL)

WASHINGTON — Americans with the strongest opinions about the country's most divisive issues are largely unhappy with how President Barack Obama is handling them, an ominous sign for Democrats hoping to retain control of Congress in the fall elections.

In nine of 15 issues examined in an Associated Press-GfK Poll this month, more Americans who expressed intense interest in a problem voiced strong opposition to Obama's work on it, including the economy, unemployment, federal deficits and terrorism. They were about evenly split over the president's efforts on five issues and strongly approved of his direction on just one: U.S. relationships with other countries.

In another danger sign for Democrats, most Americans extremely concerned about 10 of the issues say they will vote for the Republican candidate in their local House race. Only those highly interested in the environment lean toward the Democrats.

The findings are troubling for Democrats struggling to protect their House and Senate majorities on Election Day. They suggest that many of the most involved voters – those with the deepest feelings about issues high on the nation's agenda – are furious with the party in power and will take out their wrath at the polls.

"I'm going to vote Republican, and hope there's some kind of message sent to the administration that the public is unhappy with what's happened the first two years of the Obama administration," said Mark Milanese, 49, a building remodeler from Coatesville, Pa., who expressed strong disapproval for the president's approach to many major issues.

Congressional races often turn on local concerns and the candidates' character, factors that may yet sway many races this year. But many analysts think the public's widely sour mood – just 35 percent in the AP-GfK poll said the country is headed in the right direction – means this year's campaigns could be widely influenced by national issues, especially the economy.

"The economy is poor, we're muddling through in Afghanistan, we're not making much progress in the war on terror," said Paul Goren, a University of Minnesota political scientist who studies voting behavior. "Every once in a while national issues can intrude. It looks like there's a good chance this will be one of those elections."

To find people with the most intense views, the AP examined poll respondents who called an issue extremely important and compared those who strongly approved of Obama's handling of that matter with those who strongly disapproved.

By a 3-to-1 margin, more of these highly opinionated people strongly disapproved of the president's effort on the economy than strongly approved. More strongly disapproved of Obama's actions by a 2-to-1 ratio on unemployment, 2-1 on health care, 6-1 on the deficit and 2-1 on terrorism. His performance on Afghanistan, taxes, immigration and gas prices also drew strong disapproval.

Of the most frequently mentioned issues, the only one where most did not strongly disapprove of Obama's work was education, on which they were closely divided. They were also split over his handling of energy, Iraq, the environment and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Those with the strongest views represent a minority of the population, ranging from one in nine people to one in three people, depending on the specific issue. Even so, they could be disproportionately crucial because turnout in election years without a presidential race is usually light.

Kristin Nilsen, 42, a Democrat and small business owner from North Hampton, N.H., considers education a top-tier problem and expressed disappointment that Obama hasn't devoted more time to it. But she said the president had to focus on the economy "so people will have a roof over their heads," and said she would vote for Democratic congressional candidates anyway to try thwarting the GOP.

"Their agenda is really about taking down the administration," she said.

Predictably, Republicans with the strongest opinions were overwhelmingly critical of Obama on most issues, while the fiercest Democrats were usually solidly supportive.

In many instances, though, GOP sentiment was more decisive. For example, among Republicans calling the economy extremely important, 79 percent strongly disapproved of Obama's efforts on the issue and 1 percent strongly approved. The margin was much narrower among Democrats: 27 percent strongly approved while 16 percent strongly disapproved.

Looking at independents who considered an issue extremely or very important, more strongly disapproved than strongly approved of Obama's handling of 12 of the 15 issues. This included mostly negative views of Obama from independents on 10 of the 11 issues most frequently cited by people as important, including the economy, unemployment and health care.

The poll was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications from Aug. 11-16, using landline and cell phone interviews with 1,007 randomly chosen adults. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

I would like to have a few answers to a few questions brought up by this new Republican enthusiasm. If Republicans tsunami the House....

You plan on privatizing Social Security. Will I get ALL the money I put into it since I began working in 1975? If the bottom drops out of the stock market...is my money secured like the Federal Government secures Social Security?

Part of this is due to the phony overheating of the unemployment numbers by the GOP and their corporate backers. See my full take at HuffPo: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/31/voters-leaning-republican_n_700284.html

Ever notice how republicants position on the economy is to talk about how terrible the Dems are doing.

Ever onder why?

republicants economic plan:

-cut taxes for millionaires

-roll back regulations for big business

-privatize social security

I'd keep talking about the other guys too, if that were my economic plan.

This is insane. We are living the nightmare of the Dubya economy. And they want to give control back to those guys? Especially now when they are salivating over that pile of Social Security money in reserve?

Americans have a short memory.

If there is any truth to this. Then it shows that a majority of Americans are not paying attention, and have bought into all the conservative media hype. The Republicans only platform is to object to everything democratic. Now, if they were to attain majority what will they do with it? So far all I have heard is returning to the policies that put us in this bind. When that fails, as it most clearly will, who will they blame then. And will America turn another blind eye and continue our reluctance for proper change?

The polls are being pumped by a lot of phony hype. Take Jobs for example. Billions sit on the sidelines and the GOP shut down the small business stimulus bill putting even more jobs on hold. See my take on HuffPo:

Can anyone on here actually say that they were polled by these people? The reason I can only take what these polls say with a grain of salt is because I certainly never got a call and/or letter.

Never, I have always wondered when and where these supposed polls take place. No one in my family has ever been polled, nor has a good portion of my friends. Who are all polictally motivated. So I am honestly baffled as to who they are polling and how. If it's by house phone, then I imagine it's dominantly older ppl. Most ppl. no longer have house phones. Which is why I pay no attention to them.

I know, right? Also, we never get the who, what, when, where, why, and how stories of the people that were supposedly polled. I guess, until I get that call, my opinions on these polls will remain.

These polls are turning out to have the predictive power of a Cajun palm reader.
1. Predicted a tidal wave against incumbents. Less than 1% have lost in a primary.
2. Predicted that John McCain would lose if not barely squirt by. He smashed Hayworth.
3. Predicted that Republicans would win working class Congressional districts. They lost every one of them in special elections (except HW but no one on the Right is excited about that).
4. Even Meeks was suppose to lose to the Billionaire, and he blew him out.
5. President Obama was what, 3% points ahead of McCain and blew him out of the water too.

Polls this far out tell you nothing about wants going to happen on election day. Its amazing how 10 - 20 % deficits vanish in days before an election.

Who are these people? I'd understand their frustration if they'd just woken up from a coma and had missed the Bush years, but I doubt that is the case for most of these voters.

Did they also ask these voters if they were brain dead?

You plan on cutting Medicare? What are your plans to lower costs when I am elderly, retired and no longer working. Must I save for future healthcare as well? How much? What will happen to Americans who are over 50, struggling to save even a pittance? Will they be left without care because they didn't invest in HSAs?
You plan on getting rid of the Department of Education. Who will set the standards for states to be equal administrators of education across the country? Who will provide for low income/minority students who are falling farther and farther behind. How do you address CT that has the highest per capita income in the country and is ranked 50th in minority/low income performance?
You plan on repealing Healthcare Reform. How will you justify taking away reform and returning patients to the mercy of the insurance industry? How will you tell parents that their children are no longer covered under their insurance plan and explain that you are against changing an inequitable system?

You silly. They don't need to explain how they are going to do it. As long as the slogans sound good and they are anti Obama, that is all that they need.....until they actually have to govern.

Great points by the way. Fanned.

The commision will report to obama after the elections with their suggestions.... they have not reported yet because obama did not want it to be release before the elections.
I have not seen the republican plan for privatizing SS....is this something brand new that average people can read? or is this something so old that you are silly for bringing it up in the first place?
You will need to talk to obama about cutting medicare...see above... it is his commission.
RE HCR... the bill keeps the citizens at the mercy of the insurance companies....perhaps you have not gotten past page 17 of the bill??

Read Paul Ryan's Roadmap or google Republicans on Social Security.
Republicans want to privatize Social Security. President George W. Bush spent months seeking privatization with no luck. Today Republican Representative Paul Ryan is touting his new “budget” that seeks privatization of Social Security. And now the old Republican Senator Simpson, the co-chair of Obama’s deficit commission, is trashing Social Security.

The voters apparently have very short memories.....................they have conveniently forgotten that
8 years of Bush/Cheney policies have gotten us into this mess. But the president keeps talking about everything except the economy. Every time he sees a microphone he should talk about the economy.
01:55 AM on 09/01/2010
The voters can see how the recent past has affected them: 2006 the Democrats gain a majority in Congress. Life got worse for the voting public. 2009 the Democrats have the White House and a super majority in Congress. Life got much, much worse for the voting public. Voting in Democrats has been having an affect opposite of what many voters want and had hoped for.

You're a proud member of the Party of Corporate Welfare, chum. Whatever you do, never, ever mention that Bush vetoed one bill in the first six years of his presidency, but then vetoed 11 bills during his last two years. If you do, readers will laugh at you, as being just plain stupid.
