Which City Has The Best Street Art - Philadelphia, Berlin, or Chicago? (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 8/31/10   Updated: 5/25/11

As was discovered with yesterday's edition of "which city has the best street art," LA, New York, and London aren't the only cities with a gritty, artistic underside. The proud street art scenes of Philadelphia, Berlin, and Chicago are the subject of today's slideshow -- time to decide which city is best represented by artists that troll its streets? Some of the most recognized street artists move from city to city making their mark, but these three cities have a scene and a style of their own. Check out the slideshow below and tell us what you think.

The problem with Chicago's scene is that it's mostly illegal street art (for example The Grocer) which I just can't get behind. At least the street art in Philly us encouraged, supported and created by it's communities.

So Philly all the way.

Not bad, but these aren't so hidden. Berlin is quite well known for it's street art. I'm of course very partial to Rome (hence my work on http://romephotoblog.blogspot.com). There are also a lot of South American cities with amazing work, especially in Brazil.

If you want to open an eye and be in-the-know about a handful of street artists who currently work in Chicago you should check out the exhibition Sixty Inches From Center: Contemporary Graffiti Art. The show opens in one week! Get the full details here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=109911155725290&ref=ts

The examples shown for Philly (A Love Letter to You) were commissioned by the mural arts program. That collection was featured world wide as street art.

Philly is also pretty progressive in the evolution a unwanted/vacant sites into art.

Berlin....though some of the best works have been torn down over the last 15 years and the Gentrification of the Mitte has taked a bit of the edge out if it's street art. BTW- SAVE THE TACHELES!!!

Berlin and Chicago are self-consciously trying. I like Philadelphia. More examples please. More cities. Good theme.
