17 Great Places To Visit In The Fall (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 09/01/10 09:25 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:30 PM ET

With Labor Day less than a week away, it's time to start planning your fall escapes.

The great thing about traveling in the fall is the wide variety of options. If you're missing the summer sun, head to the beach in Hawaii. If a city-centric trip is what you desire, head to the cities of Europe like Amsterdam or Istanbul. Or choose a destination that's far-flung, like Sydney, Australia or Tokyo. You can even stay closer to home and enjoy fine weather and culture. Whatever you desire, here are 17 places that are best visited in fall.

Not really sure what most of the places on this list have to do with Fall. Do the electronic billboards in Tokyo look different in fall for some reason?

Amsterdam is fantastic, but Sweden is still my favorite. Sweden just has so many things to see, castles, forts, historic buildings, international businesses, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Trollhattan, Uppsula, Sundsvall, and Torekov. The last time I was in Sweden, I saw the Volvo Ocean racing sailboat, the prince racing by in his Porsche for the Gothenburg city race, and then visited most of the castles. Torekov is a very interesting and wealthy area, and the average house price is well over 1 million dollars. Sweden is a strange but cool mix of new and old age.

After Sweden and The Netherlands, my third favorite would have to be the Lake Louise, Alberta. One of the most beautiful places on earth.

Amsterdam is excellent. Pulp Fiction fans in the world would see Amsterdam as being a haven for ‘pot’ lovers who like hanging out at hash bars. Believe it or not, there is more to do when in Amsterdam. for further information visit here Interesting Facts About Europe

If you go to Tokyo this fall, the leaves probably won't be changing until November.. do yourselves a favor and get the JR Pass(es) so you can see Kyoto and Nikko as well.

Just about anywhere outside the smaller cities and 'burbs of New York State, New England or Pennsylvania (yes, I left out New Jersey, but only on principle. the west is nice but don't tell anyone from Jersey I said so) are great in the autumn.

Storm King Highway or Route 44/55 over the 'Gunks are personal favorite drives.

Where is Scotland on this list, there is nowhere more beautiful than God's own country in Autumn.

I see Austin TX on there and I agree, it is lovely. But, from a native Texan, the best bet in the fall is Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande. And the rafting in those canyons is just magnificent. Plus in the area you have the Davis Mountains and McDonald Observatory. And the Terlingua chili festival.

New England in the fall. Nr. Mt. Shasta. Blue Ridge Mountains. Oregon. Fill up with gas, take a tent. (We did that along PCH once)

Oh, the PCH is one of my favorites. The only road close to the PCH is Route 154 through the Santa Barbara mountains, from most points on the road you can see Santa Barbara, the Channel islands, and miles of Pacific Ocean.

Nice picks, in fall from the Blue Ridge Mountains all the way up to Mount Desert in Maine, is just beautiful.

ONE of the best places. Yes, in the top ten. No, the top 5. Maybe the top 3.

Heck, you're right, it IS the best.

Thanks for making me homesick

I will be in Amsterdam in 10 days and at Italian lakes in 18 days! Yippeee (Don't blame me for being excited, I haven't taken a vacation day in over 14 months!)

I'm sure you didn't work on weekends (those days count as vacation for the media - you know)
Enjoy your trip - bon voyage and enjoy some real Italian gelato - and pizza.
