'Dry Run' Suspects Freed: Yemenis On Flight From O'Hare To Amsterdam Released Without Charges

Al Soofi Al Murisi

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Two Yemeni men arrested on arrival from the United States on suspicion they may have been conducting a dry run for an airline terror attack were released without charge Wednesday after investigations turned up no evidence to link them to a terror plot, Dutch prosecutors said.

The national prosecutor's office said in a statement on its website that because of the lack of evidence "there is no reason to hold the men any longer."

Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al-Soofi and Hezam al-Murisi were arrested by airport police Monday in Amsterdam on a United Airlines flight from Chicago following a request from U.S. law enforcement officials.

The whereabouts of the two men following their release was not immediately known. Their lawyers could not immediately be reached for comment.

Prosecutors said an initial test by U.S. authorities on an item of luggage belonging to one of the men "showed the possible presence of a trace of explosives." However "more accurate" later tests did not reveal any signs of explosive material, the they said.

"Investigations in the U.S. and the Netherlands have shown that there is no longer any indication of any possible involvement of the men in any crime," the prosecution statement said.

The arrests came just days before the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in the United States. U.S. officials have also been concerned about Americans traveling to Yemen to join al-Qaida.

Al-Soofi's Dutch lawyer Wouter Hendrickx told The Associated Press before news of the release broke that al-Soofi insists he is innocent.

"He says 'I have no connections to terrorist activities whatsoever,'" Hendrickx said.

Hendrickx said al-Soofi was on his way to Yemen to visit his family when he was detained.

In a statement, the Yemeni Embassy said some media coverage of the arrests highlighted "an unfortunate, yet ongoing misunderstanding of Yemen and its citizens."

"It is important to emphasize that Yemen is a victim of terrorism as well, with al-Qaida operatives having killed over fifty Yemenis in the past three months," spokesman Mohammed Albasha said.

Al-Soofi and al-Murisi missed flights to Washington Dulles International Airport from Chicago, and United Airlines then booked them on the same flight to Amsterdam, a U.S. government official said. The men were sitting near each other on the flight, but not together.

Al-Soofi also raised suspicions in the United States on Sunday because he was carrying $7,000 in cash. An inspection of his checked luggage uncovered a cell phone taped to a small bottle, multiple cell phones and watches taped together, and a knife and box cutter, according to a U.S. official who had been briefed on the investigation.

None of the checked items violated U.S. security rules, so authorities allowed al-Soofi to fly. But his bags later were transferred to another flight and were not on the flight to Amsterdam, Dutch prosecutors said.

Al-Soofi and al-Murisi changed their travel plans at the last minute and took a direct flight to Amsterdam, raising suspicion among U.S. officials.

The U.S. Homeland Security Department confirmed that the FBI and other law enforcement agencies found no links to terrorism, but said "we will continue to pursue any and all leads in this matter."

"This incident illustrates how airport security protocols, law enforcement cooperation, and prompt international information sharing allows us to respond quickly to potential threats," it said in a statement.

You got to love these 911 anniversary coincidences. Last year it was 2 or three incidences. I'm too lazy to Google it, mostly from despair, I believe one was in Dallas. So, the "terrorism" anniversaries continue, once again Americans have little access to the full story. The "herding" of our minds through fear continues. Why rant, most Americans would rather be hyped with fear rather than put a judicial eye on a country taken over by corporations whose owners we do not know.
Our "next" war in Yemen needs this incident.

Those that allowed 9-11 to happen from this country will soon be at it again. Another attack on this country would be good for what they exist for, the greed and profits from war profiteering.

Maybe next time they'll accidentally arrest YOU on suspicion of terrorist plots. after all, you just posted on a 'liberal website' so are most likely now in *somebody's* database as a suspicious individual.

I despise bigotry, but there is no escaping that these guys fit the profile for the 9/11 terrorists. Some facts just can't be overcome. Given that, wouldn't you think these guys would have better common sense than to fly with all these supicious items? This story leaves me feeling uneasy -- I don't think the full truth is known. Taping phones and so forth to cans of liquid???? Just plain weird and unsettling. I would not have gotten on those planes given that knowledge.

I agree that these guys would fit the profile of a 9/11 terrorist.

As a frequent flier however, I disagree with your mention of suspicious items. Probably a bad coincidence since I find taping items together in your luggage is certainly a better way to go since it would make stealing small items more difficult to pilfer by airport staff who work behind the scenes when handling our luggage.

Have a nice day :)

The simple answer is to either pay the baggage handlers more, or not to carry anything worth stealing.

Have a good one!

They had to be up to something.

Who tapes watches and cell phones together and puts them on a plane?

Anything to make it that much harder for the baggage handlers to steal from individuals' luggage is fine in my book.

I think they let them go so they could keep take of them. See who they're talking to. Who their friends are. Let's hope they don't lose them before they try something for real.
Don't you feel safer?

I thought box cutters were still a no no on planes? Anyways, taping cell phones to anything, I hope would catch the attention of the airport screeners. There are just too many coincidences to not take an extra look, especially when an explosives test turns up a false positive.

I do however hope they were treated respectfully while detained and issued a meaningful apology for the inconvenience.

I've been stopped by border security, and it was because I was a stupid college student who didn't take my birth certificate with me to visit Canada. They were not very nice on the way back into the States, but I did realize they were just doing their jobs and I needed to be checked out.

The United States is going to be attacked again! Do I want to see this happen? No, of course not!
But it is going to happen, and I will tell you why:

We have regressed into our same old hateful, bigoted, holier-than-thou, "we're-better-than-you" attitude that does nothing but make other cultures despise us! Other nations see how corrupt our government politics is, how they abuse our leader when all he is trying to do is fix his predecessor's mess, how stoopidly the people follow talk-show hosts; they see how we mistreat our unemployed, our homeless, the lower & middle class and those without health care....

They see how we allow big corporations to run the show while the little guy gets trampled underfoot....losing homes, jobs, and savings while huge bonuses and tax cuts get handed out to the filthy rich like candy eggs on Easter.

They see the birthers, the Tea Party, Fox News; They hear the lies, the corruption, the hatred, the bigotry, the hypocrisy, the fanaticism, etc........

These other cultures hate us for being like this. And if I were them, I'd hate us too!

God forbid......we don't want to go through another 9/11. Nobody deserves to suffer that. But if it happens, I must honestly say that, by our hateful, greedy, self-centered, inconsiderate, mean-spirited society...... WE ASKED FOR IT!

Nope the anti-Muslim hate being done by the baggers is being used as a propaganda tool by the likes of Al Queda.

The Tea Party and Right Wing is inciting anti-American violence. Thanks so much.

That is some unusual stuff in their luggage (cellphones and watches taped together??) , it's hard to blame authorities for taking action. If anything, it only highlights that it's probably stupid to hype a story before all the facts are known.

No "dry run" so there are no suspects. These two people are innocent travelers who got caught up in the swamp of silliness known as post 9/11 travel security. Hope the governments pay their expenses. I hope they sue and win.

And the headline is pretty bad. "Innocent people released..." would have been more appropriate.

How can you make a determination either way? I know I don't have enough knowledge about the case or facts to declare them guilty or innocent. What I do know is that all of the so-called facts put to together are EXTREMELY suspicious.

"An inspection of his checked luggage uncovered a cell phone taped to a small bottle, multiple cell phones and watches taped together, and a knife and box cutter, according to a U.S. official who had been briefed on the investigation."

These guys put that stuff in their luggage and then missed the flight.

Don't trust common sense all the time. Common sense is a set of pre-defined prejudices we all have and they are rarely correct.
