Tips For Avoiding Hurricanes While Traveling In Season (VIDEO)

Hurricane Earl is heading for the East Coast (and the coast of North Carolina is facing evacuations), but that doesn't stop people from making travel plans to the Caribbean this time of year.

Karen Schaler, author of "Travel Therapy", provided tips to ABC News on how to avoid hurricanes while traveling to the Caribbean during hurricane season.

Though we often expect hurricanes mostly in August, hurricane season actually runs from June 1st through November 30th. While that's a long stretch of time, travelers can save up to 75% off Caribbean vacations during this period.

Schaler suggests avoiding the northern Caribbean (like the Bahamas) and Mexico if your travel plans are at all flexible; head instead to the Caribbean's southern most islands, including Grenada, Aruba, Bonaire, Barbados, and Curaçao, which are more likely to evade storms.

Great info. I love the Caribbean and I've always considered the deals during hurricane season but was a little unsure. Thanks for adding some insight to help me with my next trip!

I've been to most of the Carribean Islands during Hurricane season each time including the Bahamas and never had a problem. It's beautiful.

It was good she mentioned going further south - also Sept. 9 is about the center of hurricane season for the Caribbean. the farther you move away from that date on the calendar, the less chance of bad storms.

Great info to pass along. Having lived through hurricanes in SE Florida, it's good to spread the word about how to handle a hurricane situation, especially if you are travelling in the Caribbean.

It was great advice. It's an additional bit of excitement for vacation and save money during hurricane season, what fun traveling to the south Caribbean.
