New iPod Touch, iPod Nano Unveiled (PHOTOS): See What's Different

SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs announced a new line of iPods on Wednesday, including a Nano model that has a touch screen and lacks buttons.

Like previous versions, the Nano has a built-in FM tuner and can display photos. But instead of buttons, controls for playing, pausing and selecting music are right on the screen. It will cost $149 for the 8 gigabyte version and $179 for 16 gigabytes.

Jobs also introduced a new iPod Shuffle, the lowest-end music player in Apple's line. Like the past generation, it can speak the names of playlists and songs. But unlike the most recent of the tiny music players, it brings back the square shape and buttons of Apple's second-generation Shuffle.

Apple updated the iPod Touch as well, adding video-chat features similar to the newest iPhone. It has a front-facing camera for conducting video calls with other iPod Touch and iPhone users over Wi-Fi using Apple's FaceTime program. A camera on the back can be used for taking snapshots and recording video. Prices range from $229 to $399.

Jobs also said iPhone users will be getting a software update that offers the ability to upload high-definition video over Wi-Fi. And when people take photos, the new software will save three slightly different copies that, when combined, make for a sharper image.

The new software is version 4.1 of the iOS system. It will be available next week for free, initially for Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPod Touch.

The iPad currently runs an older version, though Jobs says an update coming in November will add such features as wireless printing to Apple's tablet computer. Apple had been criticized for making a powerful device but hobbling it by not including any ports for USB devices such as printers or thumb drives.

Jobs appeared at a media event in a crew neck rather than his trademark mock turtleneck.

As someone who has been exposed to many kinds of music, I look forward to Apple finally discovering at some point that not all music is "songs".

No more video? Moving backwards? Or just trying to get us to purchase Touch? Lame. I love Apple, but LAME. This new ipod is the least impressive one they've come out with.

If the Nano has a touch screen, doesn't the Touch loose some of its appeal?

Its great Apple is doing well and introducing new products. Too
bad the products just like Levi are made outside of the country, China.
Labor day without manufacturing jobs is just another sad day foe US working class.

I'm not buying this. I have the latest nano. It does what I want. This tiny little square is probably a disappointment & it probably has many flaws that everyone will complain about. Apple will then make a new generation, fixing a few of those problems, but not all....then the Apple Cycle starts again.

Do only what is marketable and only as required for said marketability. Research isn't marketable, listening to people isn't marketable. Convincing people they *need* something IS marketable, however.

But Apple isn't alone...

Well, I still prefer my iPod classic. By far more useful than any of those new iPods. For someone who listens to a lot of music, 32 gigs is just not enough.

Me too. I love being able to put my entire musical library plus all of my photos on my ipod and take it everywhere. The nano and ipod touch are just plain ol not big enough!

i think this is pretty nice for people that like tech stuff like i do.......

Meh. The iTouch probably had the best of the updates. I think the Nano is a step back in both design and function. No change for the shuffle.

I agree. What happened to the video cam in the Nano, did the can it due to the downsizing or could it have fit, but would have infringed on the novelty of the iTouch's video ability.
