Andy Roddick Outburst

NEW YORK — Andy Roddick carried on a lengthy argument with a U.S. Open lineswoman over a foot-fault call Wednesday night – although it wasn't nearly the sort of tirade Serena Williams delivered a year ago, nor did it come at as crucial a moment.

The call was made while Roddick trailed in the third set of what would become a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4) loss to Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.

Roddick asked the line judge which foot crossed the baseline, and she told him it was his right foot.

"That's impossible," Roddick snapped.

He continued berating the official between points, making a joke about "1-800-Rent-a-Ref."

A TV replay showed Roddick did commit a foot fault – but with his left foot.

The lineswoman was not on court at the start of the fourth set.

If you were watching the match you know that yes, he foot-faulted, but the lineswoman called his right foot. He even asked her to repeat the call to make sure he heard her correctly. Did he make a big deal over it and give her a hard time? Yes! She deserved it. This is a Grand Slam tournament and he is a professional tennis player. It is how he makes his living. Of course he was upset. She should have corrected herself immediately and it wouldn't have been such an issue. He even told her that if it was a foot-fault it had to be the left. Anyone who has ever seen him play knows it is highly unlikely that he will ever be guilty of a left foot-fault. For all you haters, he is one of the best American players and has done a lot for the sport as well as giving back to the community through his charity the Andy Roddick Foundation, which supports at-risk youth. Is he the best player in the world now? No. Did he overreact a bit? Yes. It's called giving a darn about winning, and that is his J-O-B people. Give him a break, he's human.

This was newsworthy? I could barely hear him. I was expecting him to at least throw his racket. Makes me wish for the days of McEnroe. Who writes these headlines?

Why post a video that doesn't contain audible audio? Useless.

Look on the positive side Andy.

This will give you more time to referee soccer matches.

Seriously:

I don't why the Tennis Associations continue to allow this kind of behaviour from a player towards an official.
If the player doesn't know enough to act as a responsible professional then the Association should.

No loss by default in that game? Yell at the ref and off you go.

The guy is a blow hard. He's washed up. He'll never win another major.

The organizers of this open are useless. First, Roddick starts into his McEnroe juvenile act and then there's a screaming match in the stands with your all too typical New Yawk punk, dropping F-bombs in what is supposed to be a public (family) event, and security waits until it escalates out of control before stepping in. The bureaucratic layabouts from the U.S.T.A. should have their heads read. This isn't sports anymore, this is New Yorkers, turning tennis into another one of their classless hooligan hoe-downs. You'd never see this in France or at Wimbledon.

He was just awful. A complete abuser of that woman even if she got the foot wrong when she responded after his berating. I'd be embarrassed if he was my son.

Nothing new from him. Another inexplicable upset and another classless emotional display.

Roddick was hysterical when he hosted SNL some years ago. He memorized his lines and never looked at the cue cards. Evert did the same some years before, and was very funny, as well. Smart, confident people who focus and prepare are role models.

But people who cannot acknowledge their own failing are not. Hence he will never win again.

This guy is not a role model for Tennis.

If you want to look at good role models, look at Federer, Nadal, and Sampras.

Has Roddick made any public statement after his tirade? He owes that lineswoman an apology. Whether it was his right or left foot over the line is irrelevant, she got the foot fault call corrent. Roddick is a spoiled ass who gives American tennis a bad image.
01:14 PM on 09/03/2010
Even after the match he was still making fun of her for specifying the wrong foot. That's class for you.

You have to know the foot, if you're going to call someone on a fault, genius.

Not to defend Roddick but have you seen his wife? He basically wins a major every night.

The guy hits his serve 300 mph and prays that it doesnt get returned. If it does he sprints across the court to hit a forehand. Serve, forehand, whine, lose is pretty much the way his matches go.

Why don't you be honest for once and admit that there is a racist double standard. Be honest, why don't you.

Its interesting when you compare the criticism against Serena to the criticism this lightweight is getting.
01:20 PM on 09/03/2010
I have to agree with you in terms of how most commentators responded. To her credit the woman commentator (I forget her name) was very critical about his behavior while the other guys (the boys' club) were trying to make excuses for him.

At what point did you decide that I think Roddick should get a pass of any sort?
There had to be some words that made you think that.

What am I hypocritical about? LOL
Do you know how much of a moron you have to be to call someone a hypocrite without knowing their views?

No he gets no pass. At no point have I thought he should get one. This is a conclusion you imagined and ran with.

My actual only point was his wife looks good. LOL Oh yeaha and pointing out the faults in his game. How you decided that means I think he gets a pass I will never know.

People are being really melodramatic. Serena's rant was a lot more fierce than this. She was threatening to kill the women. Roddick was losing a match he felt he should be winning and was frustrated. He was more just arguing, not threatening to "f***ing kill" someone

That's not my point at all, I couldn't care less about Roddick. I think drawing parallels to the reaction of Serena's tirade is completely inaccurate. One drew a penalty and the steepest fine ever imposed on a tennis player, this one drew a couple of people who don't like Andy Roddick. It was not a big deal at all. Professional athletes get mad at referees.

"Andy Roddick carried on a lengthy argument with a U.S. Open lineswoman over a foot-fault call Wednesday night – although it wasn't nearly the sort of tirade Serena Williams delivered a year ago, nor did it come at as crucial a moment."

You also fail to mention that in Williams' game, it wasn't one call but *several* calls over the course of the game, all found to be terrible calls, unlike Roddick, who did in-fact fault.

It's funny, she gets cheated throughout that game, and everyone raises hell because she got mad. Roddick gets mad at one call which was found to actually be correct, and no one cares.
