Ed Schultz vs. Glenn Beck Over Rally

First Posted: 9/2/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Ed Schultz Glenn Beck

There's a new war of words between Ed Schultz and Glenn Beck.

Schultz, who — like Beck — hosts both a radio show and a cable news show, diminished the significance of Beck's rally this week by saying that he could easily bring 300,000 people to the Washington mall.

"I could get every union head in this country. I could organize every progressive group in this country. The main bloggers. This could be the Ed March," Schultz said. "Folks, 300,000 people on the heels of six months promotion: that ain't no big shakes! This is no sign that there's going to be any turn of events when it comes to the ballot box...

"NBC News says 300,000 people. I bet I could do that!" he continued. "I bet I could do that with this radio show and my TV show and six months promotion. If I had the budget, I could equal that march. I know I could...I guarantee you, I could do more than 300,000. It ain't a big deal."

LISTEN:

On his radio show Wednesday, Beck responded by mocking Schultz's ratings.

"Ed Schultz said he could draw 300,000 people at the mall," Beck said. "Hey Ed, just a quick personal note: first, why don't you try to draw 300,000, you know, in the demo? Just to turn on their TV. And then you get back to us on the mall."

WATCH:

In August, Schultz's MSNBC show saw its best ratings yet: 623,000 total viewers, and 176,000 viewers in the Adults 25-54 demographic.

Schultz repeated his claim Wednesday night on MSNBC, while also going after Beck for his claims that Schultz is an angry ranter:

Ed, the Left couldn't generate a crowd one-fifth the size of Beck's crowd, and that was using all the usual Leftist organizations. How do you suppose you could do better. And before some here call me out for this, try comparing photos of the two rallies!?

now wha? Beck is calling Shultz an angry ranter? Wow. Am I in a Simpon's cartoon? What the heck is going on?

I can't wait to see Ed's 10/02/10 rally, I will be interested to see how the Global Climate change crowd leaves the place. Seems like there will be a lot of anger in one place and it will be interesting to see the agenda of the rally? what else is planned other than to see if he can get as many people to come to his rally compared to Glenn's rally. I haven't heard much about the reasons Ed is holding his rally, if anyone knows please fill me in.
If he doesn't buy some music acts to preform it'll will be a ghost town, people would show for a free concert but not to hear Ed complain.
12:34 PM on 10/01/2010
It is not Ed's rally, he is an invited speaker…but that does not stop Ed from trying to take credit for it.

Ed Schultz wishes there was a vs with Glenn. Dream on Ed. You aren't even in Glenn's dust.

Beck is just a former Morning Zoo Radio drug-addict/alcoholic who found religion and jockeyed his Zoo skills into politics. Simple as that. Check it out.

Or listen to him. He admits all of this. It's not a secret, nor is it news. But, it is inspirational to see someone rise above their problems to lead a successful life.

Glenn, please help me with these dumb commie libs. I always tell the stupid libs that I am restoring honor to America. The problem is, when they ask, "How?", I don't know what to say. Please tell me what to say. Another little problem I have is when I tell stupid libs that Soros is evil and then they tell me someone named Murdoch has business relations with N. Korea, and a Saudi Prince is his business partner. They also try to tell me that fifteen of the nineteen 9/11 terrorists were Saudi Arabia.
Please Glenn, help me. I'm getting so confused. We are supposed to hate Muslims, right? And why do they call you, "Murdoch's meat puppet?"

Honor is a gift that you give to yourself, by living a good, honest life, working hard, living within your means, and being the best person you can be. Then, you commit yourself to serving as an example in your community by donating your time and talents to help your fellow citizens. Those around you will see your efforts and duplicate them.

Communities grow with good, hardworking, charitable, honest people, and they stabilize as people live within their means. We stop relying on the government to fix everything. We also demand hard work, honesty, and thrift out of our leaders, and remove those who fail. That's how we restore honor to America.

As for your second problem, Soros is evil. I note that your liberal friends don't deny this. Instead they respond with an ad hominem attack on Murdoch. This is a typical liberal response when they cannot respond substantively. Ignore it and demand a substantive answer - the liberal will fail every time.

You are confused if you think we are supposed to hate Muslims. Glenn never said or suggested that. As for the ad hominem attacks on Glenn, see my response above.

Don't you feel better?

I love how republicans always confuse quantity for quality. The National Enquirer is one of the most widely read publications, Baywatch was one of the most widely viewed tv shows. Would anyone in their right mind call either of these 'quality?'

I love how liberals defend the poor ratings of their pundits by citing a quality over quantity argument. What a total fallacy. People watch TV because they like what they see - it is always a qualitative analysis for the persons watching.

Ed Schultz has a big mouth. Before he tries for 300,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial, he should try to get another 1.4 million listeners to catch up to Beck. The fact is that Schultz could not fill the men's room at the Lincoln Memorial.

What Schultz is saying is Beck's performance was zeitgeist of modern media propaganda, NOT of populist sentiment.
The rightwing have mastered the use of media to advance their political causes by funding media programs that were not profittable for years, like Rush Limbaugh's.
FOX cable has dominated because its been funded without profit for years and sold cheaply to all cable providers. MSNBC cannot be found in many basic cable providers most basic plans.

And because TV and radio have been monopolized by a few rightwing powers in each small market (Columbia SC eg), they can easily control people's exposure to news, information, opinions, eventually advancing their political agenda.

Beck is just the latest incarnation. Rush is the modern pioneer. But before him, there were radio pundits in the early 1930s who spread bigotry, propaganda, lies, slander to advance the political agenda of the right. Its not new.

Morton Downey Jr. was the pioneer that I recall and he did all the things being done by this new crop of opportunists. Bigotry sells as do political lies and intrigue, sexual scandal, and general skullduggery. These people will keep coming out of the woodwork till the end of time.

Please cite any statistics that show that Rush Limbaugh's show was not profitable for years. Whatever small investment was made in starting Rush Limbaugh's show has been repaid tens of thousands of times over. As for FOX, FOX Cable is wildly profitable. You may have watched a few of their shows like American Idol, the Simpsons, Married with Children, 24...just to name a few. Fox News is also wildly profitable. See this article - http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/10/business/media/10ailes.html - where they state "Fox News is believed to make more money than CNN, MSNBC and the evening newscasts of NBC, ABC and CBS combined."

With the advent of the internet, there are more outlets for news than ever before. There is no way any one branch of thought can manipulate all of the media. Yes, pundits can spread lies and deception. But, people choose what message they want to hear.

You can't compare rating of Fox to MSNBC. Fox is the only republican channel. MSNBC has to split their audience of people who honest and both sides of the story between themselves and CNN.
01:51 PM on 09/07/2010
The problem is that MSNBC and CNN together do not have the numbers Fox has.

That's also why the Democratic party has so many members. Class warfare is a clear form of hate. Beck, well, just how he inspires hate is the province of the Democrats.

yeah right, democrats... the party of inclusiveness is also the party of hate. That's a laugh a minute. We have more acceptance in our ranks than any republican I can think of. We can certainly go through the laundry list of republican rally signs... the only thing we do hate is republican idiocracy at it's finest and that would be G. Beck.
