Los Angeles Parents Take Action To Improve A Failing School

First Posted: 09/02/10 02:29 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:30 PM ET

A group of concerned Los Angeles parents are planning to take action to improve what they say is a dangerous local school.

New California legislation, known as the "trigger law," enables parents to take over a school they feel is failing to meet standards.

The parents from Mount Gleason Middle School sat down and spoke to CNN's Thelma Gutierrez about the new legislation and what they are doing to ensure a better education for their children.

CNN reports from Tujunga, Calif.

Parent Revolution: another astroturf group, just like Stand for Children. Or should I say Stand on Children.

What do you mean if any of the parents pay taxes? What do you think we are criminals? Of course we pay our taxes, which are probably more then yours because we probably live in a better area then you.

They say ignorance is Bliss, It must be in this case.
Many of the Parents involved are educated homeowners and pay taxes.
People that are not walking in our shoes, should not be criticizing. We asked the Parent Revolution for help after we were organized, because we had nowhere else to go. They helped us get the
Legislation we needed to fix the mess.

Mount Gleason will stay a public school.
We are not Changing Mt. Gleason to a Charter School! We are trying to force the District to fix it
like we have been asking for the last 10 years! We want to save all of our Teachers. We want a
safe school for our students to attend, Staff members being attacked, and Students Attempting to murder students on our Campus should not be tolerated . By their lack of action, it is our opinion,
The District says it should.
We are also looking for good Lawyers, many Parents are ready to file Lawsuits.

People who are criticizing us, are saying , -We don't care if your childrens lifes are ruined,
because we think everything is fine the way it is-.That may be good enough for you, but not for us.
The Parents of Sunland -Tujunga will fight to save their Children. How ignorant of you to criticize.

What’s up with the return of the 18th century, laissez-faire style of random capitalization?

The defender's of the status quo trot out the same arguments lamenting attacks on government schools. There is a reason they are under attack. They are failing miserably on fiscal and intellectual grounds.

Now, the same people who use "lack of parental involvement" as an excuse for government failure are attacking parental involvement. If it isn't higher pay for a protected class of monopolists, it must be a bad idea.

If anything, the California "Parent Trigger" law is too tepid. The idea that students and society should wait yet another few years for better education alternatives is absurd. We simply must stop worrying about teachers, their unions, the administrators, or their salaries and benefits. None of these things benefit children or taxpayers.

This nation cannot afford the loss of human potential caused by the failed government/education complex. Ignore the crocodile tears of the people who created this mess. Change the system. Change it faster and harder. Forget "reform." Don't stop short of total transformation.

It would be interesting to know if any of the parents pay taxes to educate their children?

What a shallow and ignorant puff piece for the dubious and unworkable "parent trigger" law! Here's a more intelligent and nuanced look.

Thank you! I am amazed by the continuous attack on the public schools, and similar to the attack on social security, private interests would love to get their hands on the money that is supposed to go towards the public good.

The parent revolution no longer works with Green Dot we are not trying to make our school a charter. Can you read?
