A distinct possibility. Which, when you think about certain football players and what THEY get up to in str, er gentlemens clubs, isn't really a major deal. I'd prefer to think that our hero was enjoyng a taste of the Rhur Valleys finest and it was a touch more potent than she expected.LOL.

This is not a "boo-boo" on her foot, if the tendon was affected. Tendons do not heal quickly, if at all, without surgery.
The person who referred to her as a "has been" must have missed Wimbledon this year.
Last night, I watched her with her sister Venus being interviewed after Venus' match. They're smart and delightful women. It's sad how unappreciated they are, especially considering there's no other female American tennis player anywhere near the top.

It's an upside-down set of priorities we seem to have adopted somewhere along the line. Teachers and social workers are bombarded with loads of daily stress with no acclaim and don't make enough to fill a piggy bank, while people who train themselves (albeit hard) to professionally hit, catch, kick, run with, or bounce a little ball collect more $,$$$,$$$ in a year than most of us will in a lifetime.

I'm not a Williams fan, but I do think that playing tennis at that level with stitches and wounds in various states of healing would be pretty unbearable. I've had several foot surgeries via military service, and the funny thing about feet is...well, everywhere you go, there they are. Even with injections, it's hard to get past the pain and swelling.

She was a great tennis player until that rant in Australia ... After that, my tennis playing daughters and myself have relegated her to a "has been". I'm sure she doesn't care and doesn't even know this, but we do.

Maybe this will help people understand how this type of injury can occur.

The tendons on top of the foot are really superficial. On most people, you can actually see the tendons through the skin by pointing the foot downward. Also, there are relatively few pain nerve fibers on the top versus the bottom of the foot. You can check for yourself by scratching the top of your foot, and then the bottom. As long as you don't have calluses or diabetes, the top of the foot is far less sensitive to "pain" than the bottom.

Secondly, this type of injury is surprisingly common. It usually results from a dropped knife, but it can also occur from dropped glass (like a beer bottle). One can imagine that a World Cup match in a German Pub can result in some dropped beer bottles. Anyway, when these injuries occur, most people have no idea about the tendon damage underneath because the tendon is only mildly used in every day life. In urgent care, we typically don't see these patients until weeks later when the injury fails to heal well, or even worse, osteomyelitis has developed (infection of the underlying bone).

Anyway, for tennis players, foot tendon function is quite important for their footwork. It's probably why Serena felt pain during her exhibition match, and it's why US doctors felt that precise, surgical approximation of the tendon would be critical for her further career.

So the claims that Serena is lying are unwarranted.

There are some athletes on the damned if you and damned if you don't list, Serena is on that list.

What a BS story. I don't buy it. I don't know how you would cut the top of your foot so severely that it required surgery to repair the tendon without knowing it and by someone breaking glass. It takes some strength to cut a tendon.

I think she kicked a window or door in a rage.

Too bad you weren't on the other side of it. Hater.

I'm just glad her and her bad attitude won't be in this U.S. open.
11:27 AM on 09/06/2010
So you don't like a little "color" in your tennis?
07:03 PM on 09/06/2010
Nah, color is fine. Venus is a much better sport than Serena although I'm a bit tired of her winning. Part of the problem is I think they both care too much about their clothing lines and fame rather than their game. Because honestly if Serena was serious, lost a few pounds, got a better attitude, and practiced more often she would be so dominant it would be insane.

Why the heck she had to explain anything is beyond me. It's nobody business anyway.
02:38 PM on 09/03/2010
uh ... she's a public figure who's played like crap ... and withdrew from another tournament .... I don't know why she's explaining.

A better question to ask is why can't she remember exactly what happened to her feet? She says she "may have dropped something."

She was obviously either drunk or high on something else. Now that is her business ... which is why she's acting like she's a re**** and doesn't know for sure what happened.

uh.... so what? She is a tennis player, and a darn good one. I imagine the other players wish they played like crap the way she does, after all she's only won 2 majors this year. Her decisions on how many tournaments she plays in is her business, as long as she is not breaking the WTA rules.

I frankly don't give a fig about her recollection or not, like I say it is not my business and I'm pretty sure there have been a lot of people that have gotten hurt and can't tell you how it happens.

If she was drunk or high on something, still her business, her money and her life.
I don't have a clue what you mean by "re****", but I'm willing to bet that it say more about you than her. Just saying.

The mystery is not solved. It still makes no sense from what she said. If you're walking along wearing sandals, how can you get cuts on both feet, bottom and top. So the broken glass jumped up landed on top of her foot and lacerated a tendon? Perhaps she had been drinking and dropped a glass on her foot? Still doesn't explain cuts on both feet, top and bottom. Sorry Serena, try again.
03:11 PM on 09/03/2010
Okay Ocean ... how's this story line run out for you?

Serena and her training partner were leaving the restaurant ... both of them smashed beyond belief ... and either she or her training partner drop a glass/tumber and it hits the top of Serena's foot, exploding on impact, cutting Serena's tendon ...and with the remaining glass hitting the floor. Since Serena's wearing sandles, and continuing to walk, the broken glass ends up under her other foot and cuts her.

Case solved -- game, set and match. I'll send out an invoice to you soon.
