Suspicious Vehicle In NYC Shuts Down Street In Midtown Manhattan

Police are investigating a suspicious vehicle in Midtown Manhattan, prompting the shutdown of Park Avenue between East 50th and East 57th streets. UPDATE: All clear.

The car in question is a black Mercedes thought to be near Park Avenue and East 51st Street, per FOX New York.

An email alert from the NYC Office of Emergency Management says people should "expect delays in the area," DNAinfo reports.

More from the Associated Press:

Pedestrian and street traffic was blocked on about 10 blocks around the car at about 4:30 p.m., but vehicles are now being allowed to travel again on Park Avenue.

Police say the car has been on the street since 6 a.m. Thursday and the trunk appeared to be weighted down. Authorities were unable to contact the owner and decided to check out the vehicle as a precaution.

Police say people who reported hearing an explosion were actually hearing the sounds of officers using tools to investigate the car.

HuffPost commenter jacobnyc pointed out: "I wonder if the person chose the location (E.51st & Park Ave) after the proposed Ground Zero Mosque (Park51)."
