What To Bring To College: A List Of 12 Essentials

First Posted: 09/02/10 05:01 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:30 PM ET

Extra-long sheets. Shower caddy. Flashlight. Such are the things you are reminded over and over again to bring to college by the dorm-decorating lobby (Bed Bath & Beyond, we're looking at you). But there are other essentials, both material and non-material, that you may not realize you need until it comes time to use them. Our editors asked readers what things they absolutely could not live without at school and narrowed down the list to 12 requisite items. Take it from those who've been there.

What was the best thing you brought to college? Chime in below.

One of the most important things to bring to college is a mind aware of how prejudice can inadvertently be communicated. Everyone heading to college should take a look at http://www.refusethesilence.com It is a wonderful site featuring interviews of students-of-color talking about their college experience. What I learned was that there are so many ways that students express 'micro-racialism' from stereotyping people to outright aggression. I guarantee that if you look at this site, you'll be prepared for a much more inclusive college experience.

If you want to feel old, how about thinking of all the things you brought to college which are no longer needed: type writer, turntable and change for the pay phone down the hall.

If the list doesn't have an ounce and a two-four on it, it's a ticket to the bottom half of the newly-evolving social status pecking order.

Laptop? Condoms/birth control (sounds funny, but nothing's funny about getting STDs or pregnant)? A general purpose cleaner (e.g. Windex Disinfectant/Lysol) that can be used to clear off all surfaces that dirty people will touch?

1. The new laundry machines mostly run on cards now, no quarters required.
2. Duct tape is handy for lots of things, hanging posters is not one of them.
3. The George Forman grill and a small fridge are handy.
4. Some little speakers for the ipod. Everybody has their own music, it's often hard to find speakers.

Some good ideas...you don't even have to be a collage student to actually use some of these ideas...everyone has to improvise a times!!!

Actually, duck tape doesn't work that well to hang posters. It only lasts at most two weeks, or at leas for me.

A safe or some other way of securing valuables. I had several pieces of jewelry "disappear" my first two years of college.
