Anti-Abortion Group Takes Aim At Democrats

An anti-abortion group plans to air radio ads in three congressional races calling for the defeat of Democratic incumbents.

WASHINGTON — An anti-abortion group plans to air radio ads in three congressional races calling for the defeat of Democratic incumbents, among the first ads to capitalize on a Supreme Court ruling this year that freed corporations to directly influence elections.

The group, AUL Action, is targeting Democratic Reps. John Boccieri of Ohio, Christopher Carney of Pennsylvania and Baron Hill of Indiana. AUL Action is the legislative arm of the nonprofit Americans United for Life.

The ads cross a new threshold in campaign communication and embrace the latitude granted by the Supreme Court in its 5-4 decision in January to increase the power of corporations and unions to sway government decisions.

Ad spending is on a record pace as outside groups raise more money from corporations, individuals and unions. As the November general election nears, political strategists believe more groups will follow AUL's path.

AUL Action is incorporated as a nonprofit under section 501(c)4 of the tax code. As such, it now enjoys the expanded rights granted by the court. Before that ruling, groups such as AUL were limited to airing "issue ads" that drew attention to candidates positions but could not recommend whether voters should vote them in or out of office.

Audio clips of the ads were obtained by The Associated Press from a Republican strategist not affiliated with Americans United. The group confirmed the placement of the ads.

Last month, AUL relied on the court's decision to endorse Colorado Republican Jane Norton for the Senate. Norton eventually lost to tea party-backed candidate Ken Buck, a county prosecutor.

AUL Action says Boccieri, Carney and Hill are the first of about a dozen members of Congress it intends to target with ads. The one-minute ads are scheduled to begin airing Friday for one week. They criticize Boccieri, Hill and Carney for voting for President Barack Obama's health care law. In a statement, AUL Action President Charmaine Yoest said the vote amounted to "the largest expansion of federal funding of abortion ever."

"They will not be able to hide from that vote any longer," she said.

Before the bill passed, Obama signed an executive order affirming long-standing restrictions on taxpayer-funded abortions.

Under the law, private plans in new insurance markets opening for business in 2014 can cover abortion, but payment must come from enrollees themselves, not from federal tax credits that will be offered to make premiums more affordable.

In the ads, a female narrators says, "The life of an innocent child may not matter" to Boccieri, Hill and Carney.

"It's time to send someone to Washington who shares our values, not Nancy Pelosi's," the ads say.

(This version CORRECTS to show Boccieri represents Ohio, not Indiana.)

The never ending argument. If people SERIOUSLY want to curb abortion at all costs, then prevention needs to be amped up. Access to care facilities and the knowledge that goes hand in hand with the birds and the bees is needed. Nothing pisses me off more than someone wanting to be pro-life but preach abstinence. You're WAITING for an unwanted pregnancy!

Since I was 8, my mother had the talk with me and by 10 I knew as much as she wanted me too. Because of this I have no children and have always took that necessary precaution to guard myself.

I concur.

When will Congress pass a law allowing those of us who think a war is wrong not to have our tax dollars spent for it? Abortion is a legal medical procedure and yet our tax dollars cannot be spent to provide a desperate woman with a safe procedure. Why do religious people have no problem with wars (which kill many a pregnant woman and her fetus) but cannot get it that every woman is not able financially or emotionally or physically to continue with a pregnancy? Their "morality" seems kind of selective to me.

Love them on the inside. Hate them on the outside. Should be the Republican abortion motto.

I tend to say this to my friends, I respect your right to be anti-abortion, as long as you are in favor of pervasive sexual education in schools and you support contraception. Otherwise, your position is fantastical and not rooted in the reality of the 20th or 21st century.

Shares our values? you mean like the value placed on women's right to choose which is shared by most Americans, not to mention protected by a 40+ year old Supreme Court decision?

Come off it. This whole anti-choice campaign is a losing issue. Conservative groups are always on the wrong side of history (that's kinda the definition of conservative anyway isn't it?)

As one who remembers the way it was before Roe, I can guarantee that making abortion illegal won't stop them, it'll just move abortions to a less safe environment for women pregnant with an unwanted fetus. Not only that, but abortions were always available for the more affluent with a family doc doing a DNC, or flying somewhere to have it done legally.

This attack is an effort by the elite self appointed moralist to control women who wouldn't otherwise fall under their influence. Their one size fits all approach is contrary to the very tenants of freedom, which is a meaningless word, unless one includes the rest of the phrase: freedom of choice.

they don't like big government unless it's to force their religious dogma on women who don't share it.

They aren't all religious. I'm anti-abortion and I don't go to church, nor do I pray everyday (like Obama). I'm also anti-death penalty in case your wondering.

yeah, why didn't they target republicans when they had all the power? i noticed nobody passed any laws overturning Roe v Wade then. if they did, then the right couldn't use it as a political fundraising tool.

Republicans will never overturn Roe v. Wade. It is to useful for rallying their base. Claiming to be in favor of overturning it works very well in getting their base to the polls, nothing more, nothing less.

The same thing could be said about the democrats. They control the house, senate, and presidency. Where is the legislation they have passed on the issues they stand so strongly for like gay marriage, green energy, gun control... Even if they didn't have the support of a single republican on every single issue they could pass any bill they wanted. I guess most of them just pretend to care about those issues when it's beneficial for them. They need their fund raising tools too.
