California Blue Whales

PALOS VERDES -- Dozens of giant blue whales are putting on a show along the Southern California coast and whale watchers are flocking to the area to catch a glimpse of the spectacular sight.

Captain Dan Salas told KTLA as many as 100 blue whales have been spotted swimming in the waters between Huntington beach and Santa Monica bay this week.

Experts say that number is extraordinary since only 2,000 blue whales have been documented in the north Pacific Ocean.

I'm lucky enough to live in Redondo Beach, California and see the Blue Whales blow (spray) everyday! I decided to see them even closer on a boat tour...booked a boat called the Voyager from Redondo Pier and went out...a couple miles offshore. There were 20 to 25 Blue Whales, some got pretty close to the boat. It was absolutely amazing!

here's my blog about it http://www.lasgoodlife.com/featured-articles/magnificent-blue-whales-santa-monica-bay/

If you're anywhere close to the area, I really recommend it. Everyone on the boat loved it, and this is really the first time they've been in this area with these numbers.

What a wonderful treat to see such a sight! Years ago my parents lived in Southern California and we sometimes could see migrating whales from the balcony. Just magnificent creatures.

Special blessings to Captain Paul Watson and his crew of the Sea Shepherd who risk their lives to save them.

And don't let the biologists kid you. Whales are smarter than humans, with a brain weighing over 50 lbs. They just don't have hands, which makes construction projects (as if they ever even felt the need) difficult.

An amazing spectacle. Hope we get things right, so they'll be around for a long, long time.

awesome. we went on a whale watching day cruise from san francisco and saw gray whales and dolphins and a huge sea turtle. It was a wonderful experience even if we all got very sea sick. I was told by the biologists on the ship that it would be a milder sea if we'd gone from monterey bay. anyway, we saw the whales breach and that was awesome.

I saw one of these whales last year during one of my stops up Pacific Coast Highway towards Oxnard. In that instant, it was just me and that whale that came up to say HELLO. I will never forget that magical moment. Such beautiful animals they are!
