First Posted: 9/3/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Budget Director

Former director of the Office of Management and Budget Peter Orszag will join the New York Times as a columnist, the newspaper announced Friday.

Orszag, who left the Obama administration this summer, will write one to two columns per month on economic and domestic issues for the paper.

"We welcome Peter Orszag's expertise and insight to our Op-Ed lineup," editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal said in the announcement. "As a Washington insider and one of the most recognizable names in economics, his writing will provide a unique perspective on the national landscape."

Orszag's first op-ed will appear this coming Tuesday.

How can Orszag find time to write for the Times when he has such a busy schedule as a swinger.

I don't see what the point is, when Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman is already at the New York Times and is a progressive. Isn't Peter Orszag a slightly less progressive and slightly less widely respected economist, basically the same as Paul Krugman except not as good, sort of like a cheap imitation? I mean, if they fire one of their conservative op-ed columnists, this is a good move, but they should have brought in one of the excellent columnists at The Nation magazine or some other progressive publication or website (perhaps even someone from this website). I mean, anyone left of center is a trillion times better than someone like Bill Kristol, but I get the sense the New York Times is just trying to hire some high-profile figure from Washington, D.C. rather than going out and finding the best op-ed columnist out there in the country, which is not as hard as it seems given the way the blogosphere generally functions as a sort of meritocracy so the best bloggers end up being popular, usually. I know the New York Times already hired a conservative op-ed writer from the blogosphere, and I think the main things they should look at are the quality of the writing, how good the writer is at predicting future events (who wins elections, etc.), how sane and grounded in reality the writer is, how smart the writer is, and how popular/unpopular the writer is already.

I take it that the photo hufnpuf chose to run indicates their disappointment that Peter didn't accept their offer.

I did not follow why he left. A bummer----I thought he was needed-------I was out of country; hope he didn't get sacked cuz they were blaming HIM for the econ. issue. Frankly, it should have be Summers and Geithner sacked---

I hope that means they r firing David Brooks.

If you don't like Brooks than what are you doing reading The New York Times. Take a copy of Daily News and save some money.

Gail Collins isn't even as funny as Maureen Dowd is now--and SHE'S not funny. Ms. Collins is atrocious.
