Jan Brewer Admits She Was Wrong About Beheadings

PHOENIX — A claim by Arizona's governor that rising violence along the U.S.-Mexico border has led to headless bodies turning up in the desert came back to haunt her during a stammering debate performance in which she failed to back it up.

Gov. Jan Brewer, who gained national attention defending the state's tough new immigration law and warning of increasing border bloodshed, has spent the time since the gubernatorial candidates' debate earlier this week trying to repair the damage done from her cringe-worthy contest against underdog challenger Terry Goddard.

"That was an error, if I said that," the Republican told The Associated Press on Friday. "I misspoke, but you know, let me be clear, I am concerned about the border region because it continues to be reported in Mexico that there's a lot of violence going on and we don't want that going into Arizona."

She said she was referring to beheadings and other cartel-related violence in Mexico in comments she made earlier this summer about decapitated bodies found in the state's southern region.

Brewer's candidacy caught a big break in April, when she signed a controversial new state immigration law that put local police officers on the front lines of enforcing federal immigration law. At the time, Brewer's primary campaign faced serious challenges, but signing the bill cleared her path to what proved to be an easy primary win on Aug. 24.

Brewer stumbled through her opening statement of the debate Wednesday. She lost her train of thought for more than 10 painful seconds as she laughed, looked down at the table and finally regained her composure.

Goddard, who trailed by 20 points in a July poll, said he brought up the beheadings comments because Brewer hadn't acknowledged she was wrong.

"It's a kind of fear-mongering that has hurt our economy. It has driven jobs away," he said. "She wouldn't come off it."

Brewer apparently first referred to beheadings during a June 16 interview with Fox News, talking about "the kidnappings and the extortion and the beheadings and the fact that people can't feel safe in their community" in discussing controversy surrounding the immigration law.

She went further in a June 27 interview on Phoenix television station KPNX when asked about the earlier beheadings claim.

"Oh, our law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert, either buried or just lying out there, that have been beheaded," Brewer said.

A veteran Arizona political observer said her latest gaffes may not sway many voters but could put a charge into Goddard's campaign.

"I think it gave him an opening," said Bruce Merrill, a longtime pollster and retired Arizona State University journalism professor.

Goddard can now play the debate clips over and over as he attacks her competence to lead Arizona.

In fact, there have been beheadings in Mexico in violence associated with criminal cartels that include those active in cross-border smuggling.

And some violence has spilled over the border, including the March slaying of a southern Arizona rancher, Robert Krentz. Law enforcement officials have said they believe Krentz was killed by an illegal immigrant, likely a scout for drug smugglers.

But none of the southern Arizona coroners who handle immigrant cases have seen headless bodies.

Pima County's Dr. Eric Peters said some people might be confused when just skulls are sometimes found in the desert, but that's because of decomposition and animals that feed off bodies. He said it'd be clear if any one of those skulls had been severed from a body.

"You would find what we would call tool marks because you need to use some sort of tool to forcibly remove someone's head from the spine," he said. "You'd see saw marks," even on skulls that have long been in the desert.

A Republican legislator who was the prime sponsor of Arizona's immigration law said Brewer's critics were just playing games and ignoring the real issue – violence bleeding across the border into the United States.

"I can tell you there's been 300 to 500 beheadings and dismemberments along that border," state Sen. Russell Pearce said Thursday. "It is a national security concern, yet we're worried about this game-playing, this word-smithing."

Appears the honorable Gov enjoys her fear so much she can't help sharing it with others come election time.It sounds like Bad impulse control at best; at worst, a damn lie in fact or by omission.

I am left with 3 questions for the Governor. They are based on the assumption that government and those who report the news must serve the common good above all else. It may be an idea the Governor abhors, but I have no way of knowing, really.

The questions: How can the the right of free speech serve anyone, if it is not defended against cynicism and self-interest? Does or should free speech require a moral core that includes integrity, responsibility and self-respect? Do we as a nation prefer to be caged by lies, or are we ready to hear all the speech we can stand just so long as the facts are there for all to see?

"Misspoke" can only be true _once_; after one makes a wrong claim again, the correct verb is "lied".

When do you suppose Governor Jan Brewer will admit that what she was doing with her claim of "beheadings" in southern Arizona was telling a deliberate lie told for politican gain, to arouse and increase the fear and hatred of Arizona's predominantly white and Republican population toward Arizona's Latinos indiscriminately, whether citizens or illegal immigrants?

This would of course also require her to admit that she is a tyrant, a racist, and a bigot, hardly secrets in any case, to we citizens of Arizona.

Wait, wait, wait.

Since immigrants routinely vote democrat, again, in an effort to scare Whites into blindly voting republican (and unknowingly supporting the real republican platform: tax cuts for the top 2% and abolishing Medicare and Social Security), Boehner, Kyl and McConnell have concocted outrageous lies that marauding Mexicans are beheading Americans on the Arizona border. In fact, since 2006, border-towns in Arizona have reported a significant decline in illegal immigrant related property and violent crime, and in just 19 months, the Obama Justice Department has apprehended and deported more illegal aliens than the Bush Justice Department accomplished in 8 years. Plain and simple: Brewer pushed SB 1070 to reward her single largest campaign contributor—Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), which, with the new law, will reap huge profits from operating jails that house illegal immigrants. In Arizona, and thanks to Brewer, CCA rakes in $132 million annually, and with the new anti-immigrant law, watchdog groups are projecting a 22% increase in immigrant detainees, which, in turn, will increase CCA profits by a whopping 37%. Due to SB 1070 and ongoing republican inspired scare tactics, tourism related revenue is down 29%, yet Brewer continues to perpetuate the “southern strategy” by making baseless claims that illegal immigrants account for all drugs brought across the border, a statement soundly refuted as patently false by the U.S. Border Patrol.

She's only admitting it because she got caught lying. She's too stupid to get that there are people out there who will do their homework. She will be challenged. For this very reason she shouldn't hold any kind of office.

Politicians lie........we all know that.

But THIS?

REALLY?

300 to 500 be-headings in the dessert is THE most outrageous lie I have ever heard.

People just do not stop to think about it because these right wing teabagging types have been say so many outlandish things that most folks just shut them out.

Can you IMAGINE if your co-worker, neighbor or any of your family members made such a ridiculous claim?

You would take them to the nearest mental health expert.

The real story behind Jan Brewer her YEARS of attempted voter suppression and her ties to the private jails in Arizona that house illegal immigrant.

Private prisons are a recipe for political and judiciary corruption and Arizona has more than anywhere else in the country.

In fact Arizona attempted to have ALL of their prisons in the private sector, but having private corporations carry out the death penalty was the ONLY thing that stopped them.

Brewer is a racist attempting to gain wealth and power from her hate of non whites, it's that simple.

New Questions Raised About Lobbyist Advice

According to campaign finance records, CCA executives and employees contributed more than $1,000 to the governor’s re-election campaign. The company’s political action committee and its lobbyists contributed another $60,000 to Brewer’s top legislative priority, Proposition 100.

Brewer's clinging to a lie is not the most frightening thing about her, nor her eminently parody-able debate lapses. What's scary is that she, with Palin, Angle, etc. represent a new and evidently winnable strategy for candidates of refusing to debate ( or to debate more than absolutely necessary), refusing to talk to "unfriendlies" of the press, and just pick and choose what they will answer of what the public is asking. We've been heading this way for a while, with pols narrowing the parameters of how "spontaneous"/off-script/responsive they can be forced to be in a debate, particularly national debates, but apparently today there are more voters than ever who are Cheering Candidates On for not "getting hoodwinked" for even one minute into talking to the evil liberal media, or even to Katie Couric.

I can envision a not-too-distant future when the candidates will make their canned statements, talking past each other, and never having to account to the constituency outside of pre-fabricated comfort zones. I rather think most of our Democratic leadership would end up embracing that, too.
