Colorful Balls, Dots Replace Google Logo Today: Here's Why (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/07/10 08:54 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:35 PM ET

Today, Google's logo has been taken over by a colorful, bouncy assortment of balls.

Google frequently features creative "Doodles" on its homepage to celebrate the anniversary of an invention, landmark achievement, or notable figure (See past "Google Doodles" here). But the reason for today's interactive logo, made up of primary-colored dots that scatter and bounce based on the location of your mouse, is a bit of a mystery.

There has been speculation that today's Google logo celebrates Google's 12th birthday, although a Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land that the Google "Doodle" "is not related to Google's birthday but is fast, fun and interactive, just the way we think search should be." There is also buzz that the unusual design was intended to showcase JavaScript and HTML5 technologies.

The Guardian explains,

Google's doodle today looks ahead to the next version of the computer code that delineates the web. The doodle actually consists of lots of pieces of a web page, each using a modern form of web coding called CSS3 - "Cascading Style Sheet" elements. Each circle is actually an element called a "div" - an element into which the page is divided - which contains an instruction in its associated piece of CSS3 to make it circular rather than square or rectangular. The code also contains instructions so that if the cursor is moved near to any of the "bubbles", they try to move away.

See the logo in action at Google.com or in the video below. You can also see the progression in the slideshow below. If you keep your mouse still, the dots will eventually settle into place to spell "G-O-O-G-L-E"; move your mouse, and the "balls" contained in the logo will scatter.

What do you think of today's "Google Doodle"? Weigh in below.

Wow, Google's really got balls!

Come on, sooner or later, SOMEBODY had to say it!

Its just a little preview/test of their new search function where your search results update automatically in realtime as you type instead of when you hit Enter. Just like their new image search its fixing something that aint broken with some flashy but essentially useless or counterproductive Aero-style alpha-blending nonsense but thankfully (unlike with image search) you can at least turn this one off.

Didn't even notice. Would have been different if the search box "fled from the mouse."

I think the symbolic message is, "no matter what color you pick, the moneys flow to us."

Are bouncing balls really fun and interactive...or even news for that matter?

Funny thing about this website, you don't even have to go to the sections you don't want to read. You can click away from the articles you that don't appeal to you immediately and you certainly don't have to waste your time questioning their news worthiness. You're no better than the folks who go to the entertainment section and b1tch about entertainment stories...

I didn't take the time to read it, I took the time to point out how ridiculous an article is on bouncing balls, this is not news.

OOOOOHHH, RIGHT, CSS3, CASCADING STYLE SHEETS!!!! I got that right away!!!! These stupid Google logo design tricks are lost on everyone if you can't figure out what they mean on your own. It usually has to do with the date and something related to that. This one is too arcane and a real star in the "who cares" department.

Actually, you may not get the meaning, but you benefit greatly from CSS. It is not as arcane as you may think. While HuffPo does burden it's pages with other technologies that make it's performance, the CSS portions of these pages greatly reduces the work your computer and browser must do to present the page as you see it.

I wish I had had time to grab the code and see how they were using CSS. This is one example of their logo trick actually being something useful, for a large community — namely web developers and designers.

It seems schools are a hot bed for dumb ideas. Brought to you by the "educators" and various jerky School Boards around the country. These goofballs should be suspended and fired in some cases for lack of any critical thinking process. They seem to love to ban things.

I saw the new "GOOGLE DOODLE" last night when I signed on, and I LOVED IT! It's BRIGHT and COLORFUL and it bounces around. AND you can make it move too!! I actually think the logo should change more often anyway, since it's the very first thing one sees when signing onto Google!
GREAT JOB GOOGLE & HAPPY 12th BIRTHDAY!!

They usually have an explanation, a birthday of a person, the anniversary of an invention, thanks for confirming there was none there, I was wondering what it could be, the isolating of helium, a circus related date, something!
