Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell: I Was Sabotaged At Miss Universe Competition

First Posted: 9/7/10 06:13 PM ET Updated: 5/25/11 06:35 PM ET

Miss Australia

Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell claims that she was backstabbed at the Miss Universe competition, with another contestant lining her national dress with pins, the Herald Sun reports. The frock in question--made from a bathing suit and a flamenco dress, worn with high-heeled Uggs and meant to represent her country--was widely mocked before the pageant and Campbell found that the night of, after she put it on, "I felt these sharp pains when something stuck into my back. I took the top off and found all these pins had been stuck into it."

She said she didn't have any serious injuries and that although the "sabotage was a bit harsh," "you have to laugh at these things and not take it too seriously and it did give me a story to tell when I got home." Campbell isn't sure who was responsible for the misdeed, but remarked that the contestants from Mexico, Central and South American countries and the Philippines were notably aggressive. In another Herald Sun article, Campbell said, "Winning is so important for those girls because they become queens and are worshipped if they win, and it changes everything forever for them." Miss Mexico ended up winning the crown and Miss Philippines was said to have blown it during the Q&A portion of the program. Campbell came in third. She said she knows who didn't do it--the lovely ladies of Ireland, Belgium, Britain and Guam, who she all cited as her best friends.

Campbell told news.com.au that she's doesn't want to enter another beauty pageant and she'd like to pursue charity work. She recently scored a gig as an entertainment reporter for Australia Channel 7's "The Morning Show."

Miss Australia, accept the result, don't be a sore loser, stop this blaming game and move on.

A bit of smack from a sore loser..lol.no pun intended. Just face it, you did not win. I have heard of all types of malfunctions happening at pageants but not affecting the contestant as they were able to overcome them. They did not point the fingers at others. Be happy you were crowned third place, because with your attitude towards the other women in the pageant and calling them aggressive, it kind of shows bad sportmanship and a person who expects to win, not earns it. Just because other women are competitive during these pageants, that does not make them bad people. Duh, its a competition. being aggressive is part of competing. That just shows that they did not come into this pageant expecting to win, they were actually doing what they were supposed to be doing. As for Ms. Mexico winning, everyone knows that Latino women are hot and also very loyal. Also saying that it is more important for women of other countries such as theirs to win compared to yours, why bother even entering if the win is not going to bring you the success and adoration that women of these places would receive? Pointing fingers at this point also does not make sense. Why not complain at the time during the actual competition, not after the fact? Sour grapes it sounds like..now practice being a gracious loser. Your attitude is not becoming.

Well, we never accused beauty queens who like to be judged only by their bodies to have brains.
12:40 PM on 09/09/2010
Besides, why only now? Why didn't you complain during the pageant season?? Because it would harm your image? What a POSER!

The national costume presentation was done days before the coronation night, to emphasize.

YOU ARE SO BAD MISS AUSTRALIA FOR ACCUSING MISS PHILIPPINES.

You were roommates right? Too bad.

She got Ms. Friendship and ranked as 2nd runner up in Miss Universe 2010 yet she still needs attention. What a gross??? Next time never push her self too hard to get the congeniality award nor leave her costume anywhere so that she could guard her costume attentively! if she want to be in headline news across the globe better she wears nothing in her press conference so that she may become more controversial than Ms. Philippines. Ouch!!!! Maybe future contestants need to go through metal screening devices before competing?
Straight pins are NOT nice inside anyone's garments! Except maybe Dick Cheney's....??
10:34 PM on 09/09/2010
How about instead they go through mental screening devices? Seems more appropriate.

The only one with any right to complain about this pageant is Miss Jamaica. She was robbed. She KILLED everyone in the swimsuit competition, barely placed second in evening gowns, and unless she cursed the judges and said she hated babies or was opposed to world peace during interviews, she should have had the crown.

What's the word for NOT bowing out graciously? "I didn't win, so let me point a finger at the brown people from those countries..."

Classless...

In some countries, winning Miss Universe is the height of success and stardom for these
ladies. They've been eating, sleeping, and dreaming that crown for years.
They can taste it.
People don't realize how important it is to win from some of these places.
Think "Olympic Chinese gymnasts".

I guess in Australia and the US winning is not a big deal, although women from these countries work just as hard as any to win it.

Yes, that's right white lady.....   you didn't get what you wanted because some brown people cheated and took it from you.

Are we sure she isn't from Arizona? Someone research her background !

It sounded like she was talking about the women's attitudes and culture rather than their race to me. Don't play the race card so quickly otherwise you look like a racist.

I've been hearing the "talking about culture not race" justification for the last 30 years. It's clear what she was talking about. A woman from a Latin country won so she was trying to diminish that win by saying that ALL of the Latin women in the competition were "aggressive". It's not the color of their skin, it's that spicy hot temper! That's not racist?

Actually, to most people, our Latino/Hispanic culture is also our race (just take a quick look at any government forms)...so yes, her comment could be taken either way.
10:52 AM on 09/08/2010
Being latino, I can say this lady is 100% right! Anyone representing the Caribbean, central or South America become famous for ever. STOP PLAYING THE RACE CARD!
