PHOTOS: In-N-Out, Five Guys Tops, McDonald's Dead Last In Consumer Reports' Fast Food Burger Rankings

First Posted: 09/08/10 08:30 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:35 PM ET

Consumer Reports' October issue runs the results of their fast food burger survey, taken by 28,000 of their online subscribers. The respondents ranked 18 fast food burgers on a scale of 1 to 10, and the final results of the survey, along with a photo of each candidate, is below.

In-N-Out Burger and Five Guys shared the top honors, each earning an average score of 7.9. You may remember this same burger duo from last month's Zagat fast food survey, where Five Guys edged out In-N-Out for their best fast food burger crown.

The mega-chain trio of McDonald's, Jack in the Box, and Burger King rounded out the very bottom of Consumer Report's list, lending some credibility to this set of burger rankings (though we can't speak for some of the smaller chains in the middle -- Back Yard Burgers, Checkers, Krystal anyone?).

Below are the complete rankings from first to last, with the overall score (on a scale of 1-10) they each received. How do these burgers stack up for you?

Burgerville is good and their practices are awesome, but my favorite is still Carl's Jr guacamole or Jalapeño burgers - plus their Santa Fe chicken sandwiches are fantastic!

Burgerville or Five Guys but you might also try a few dive places or Foster Burger....not Foster Freeze and we keep hoping to try Mike's Drive Ins.

I like local places or smaller chains like Burgerville, In-N-Out, Five Guys, don't see the charm of the giant chains like Burger King, Macs or any of those kind of places.

In-N-Out is pretty much the place I go if I want a burger (I love a Double Meat, Animal Style burger). There's no other place around where I can get a good meal for the same price. The menu is simple (burger, cheeseburger, double-double, fries, shakes, and drinks covers it), but customizing your order, whether or not you use the "secret menu," is always an option.

On a side note, they are known for treating their employees very well, and keep a very open, visible kitchen. I figure that goes a long way to keeping a low bodily fluids content in my food.

Glad to see In-N-Out getting the recognition they deserve.

They all look gross!

These aren't professional photos, so they don't look that good. Plus, I can tell the In-N-Out burger is "Animal Style," which has grilled onions, making them a bit on the messy side, but taste even better.

I had my first 5 Guys last week at the new place that just opened on my street. I was seriously unimpressed.

What about DICK'S? Blasphemy!
09:34 PM on 09/23/2010
I'm sorry, but have you actually ever HAD an In-N-Out burger?? As a Seattle native who lived in So Cal for 25 years, and WAS a Dick's fan until I moved down there (I'm now back here) I was in for a complete revelation when I discovered the joys of In-N-Out. There is absolutely no comparison. Dicks is absolute crap compared to In-N-Out. Not to mention that Dicks won't even customize and keeps stuff under heat lamps. Try a Double-Double with extra tomato and get back to me.

At Burger King, the burgers are much, much better when served fresh from the broiler and when the microwave is NOT used.

You can request -- "fresh from the broiler, NO MICROWAVE" and you'll receive a very tasty burger.

You may have to wait an additional 2 to 10 minutes, but it's worth it.

BUT if Burger King wanted to be a "great" burger place you would not have to request "no microwave" or heat lamp...all of them would be made fresh to order. Factory food is factory food.

I didn't know Fuddruckers was considered "fast food." IMO if Fuddruckers qualifies then so would Red Robin or a Cheeburger Cheeburger.

Agreed! Fuddruckers is a sit down restaurant - more like a cafeteria. As far as actual fast food goes, In-N-Out deserved the top honor. It's the only fast food burger I ever eat. Their fresh cut fries are also amazing. Everything is always fresh - never frozen.
The only other fast food I eat is Chipotle, and in a pinch a sub at Blimpie's or Subway. I did not know about Five Guys - I did discover they have locations in AZ, so I may have to give them a try.

WAAAH! Since moving to Seattle, I've missed the awesome, fresh fries made as-you-watch from In-n-Out. The burgers were great too, but alas, I can only =recall= the taste - and the line of cop cars buying burgers at the one on Foothill in Tujunga ;) Gotta do that just one more time - at least.

Uncle Rudy in California. In and Out burgers are the finest! No question about it. Their fries are fine and they don't muck up the burger with lots of junk. AND ... their places are super clean, the employees all speak good English (no "yuooo wan' frize wid dat?") and are really friendly and efficient. Some years ago there was an excellent documentary film made about the great American hamburger and its history. In and Out was judged the best hamburger in the United States! I feel sorry for the people who don't have In and Out burgers in their part of the country.

I didn't see that as racist...I see a guy complaining about people not using good English or being in a postion where they deal with the public but seem to be unable to communicate with the public they are trying to "serve". All the times I've been to In-N-Out the people have been polite and helpful, can't say that about some other places.
