Donald Trump's Mosque Offer REJECTED: 'Cheap Attempt To Get Publicity'

NEW YORK — Donald Trump offered Thursday to buy out a major investor in the real estate partnership that controls the site near ground zero where a Muslim group wants to build a 13-story Islamic center and mosque.

The offer, though, fell flat nearly instantly.

"This is just a cheap attempt to get publicity and get in the limelight," said Wolodymyr Starosolsky, a lawyer for the investor, Hisham Elzanaty.

In a letter released Thursday by Trump's publicist, the real estate investor told Elzanaty that he would buy his stake in the lower Manhattan building for 25 percent more than whatever he paid.

"I am making this offer as a resident of New York and citizen of the United States, not because I think the location is a spectacular one (because it is not), but because it will end a very serious, inflammatory, and highly divisive situation that is destined, in my opinion, to only get worse," the letter said.

Trump also attached a condition to his offer: He said that as part of the deal, the backers of the project would need to promise that any new mosque they constructed would be at least five blocks farther away from the World Trade Center site.

In Gainesville, Fla., a minister backed off and then threatened to reconsider burning copies of the Quran on the anniversary of 9/11, angrily accusing the imam leading the mosque of lying to him on Thursday with a promise to move the Islamic center away from ground zero. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf earlier had denied there was ever such a deal or that he had spoken to the minister.

The current planned location is just two blocks north of the site. Opponents argue it's insensitive to families and memories of Sept. 11 victims to build a mosque so close to where Islamic extremists flew planes into the World Trade Center and killed nearly 2,800 people, while proponents support the project as a reflection of religious freedom and diversity.

It's unclear how much control Elzanaty has over the property, which is owned by an eight-member investment group led by Soho Properties, but his response was unequivocal.

"He knows what the value of the building is. If he were really interested in buying the buiding, he would have come forward with at least $20 million," Starosolsky said.

Elzanaty said he remains committed to the idea of having a mosque built on at least part of the property.

A spokesman for Soho Properties general manager Sharif El-Gamal and his nonprofit group, Park51, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. Earlier in the day, the organization sent a statement to The Associated Press affirming that Soho Properties controlled the real estate and that Elzanaty was one of several investors.

El-Gamal and other people associated with the Islamic center have refused to detail the ownership structure of the real estate partnership that holds the site.

Elzanaty's lawyer did not immediately return a phone message Thursday. But in a pair of interviews with the AP this week, Elzanaty said he had invested in the site with an intention of making a profit and was willing to half the land for private development, and maybe all of it if a Muslim group doesn't come forward with enough money to build the mosque.

Trump Tower & Hotels are amazing, no doubt.
But this public release is a little bit strange...

Maybe he will finally win this contract if owners can't make the both ends meet...

You know what i think donald trump should just buy the land he is right about the man using religion as a plan to get more fame and fortune and you know what im muslim and i think this whole thing should be over and that muslims are peaceful people and the TERRORISTS that are NOT muslim are the ones to be blamed ,people are discriminating muslims for something they didnt do just like for example christian terrorists are killing people because they dont think other people are right , christians are not bad only the terrorists are and that is the difference that people are forgetting these days those terrorists are just using muslims because they know if muslims are blamed they will be discriminating and will betray the country there living in and just bring more hatred around the world people have to tthink before they do things this is over exaggerating. i hope life is good for everone and all discriminations against all people are stopped

I hope life is good for everyone also. Remember, it is some people that are actinig badly, certainly not all. I would like for everyone to go home and meditate for a couple of days with the TV and radio off. A long time ago it took a long time for news to travel over
the whole country. Maybe that was good.

Trump was responsible for releasing this "offer" to the media. He could have made it privately to the developer and left it at that. The new season of his television show premieres next week. Draw your own conclusions.

The same Donald Trump who announced with some flourish a few years back that he was prepared to rebuild the twin towers of the Trade Center, complete with a large model of the project in the lobby of Trump Tower. The media showed up in droves and, coincidentally, were met with Trump's own camera crew filming a portion of his television show. Shortly thereafter the model was removed and nothing more was said on the subject.

If I had the means, I would have made a slightly higher offer, but it sounds like the receiving end just wants a shiny little suitcase full of millions of dollars or else they won't even think about considering. These kinds of things are done over long mettings, hours of conversations, and many of dinners. If the right offer was given, the Mosque could move, possibly giving relief to those who are upset about it, or I think it would be better if the space were to become a huge center for spiritual awareness and not just 1 religon, but a place for all to converge.. This is such a dramatic issue.
12:49 PM on 09/11/2010
Not a dramatic issue. Not a mosque. And you are wrong about the receiving end also.

This story is all about the trumpster getting publicity.

You should probably get your self educated on the facts of this community center. Here are a few excerpts from wikipedia for you but

"We insist on calling it a prayer space and not a mosque, because you can use a prayer space for activities apart from prayer. You can't stop anyone who is a Muslim despite his religious ideology from entering the mosque and staying there. With a prayer space, we can control who gets to use it.[59]"

"Besides the Muslim prayer space, the Initiative's plan includes a 500-seat auditorium, theater, performing arts center, fitness center, swimming pool, basketball court, childcare services, art exhibitions, bookstore, culinary school, and a food court serving halal dishes."
