Stand Up To Cancer Telethon: Stars Unite For Fundraiser (Live Stream)

Telethon

First Posted: 09/09/10 10:03 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:35 PM ET

Following up the success of the inaugural 2008 Stand Up To Cancer Telethon, which raised $100 million for cancer research, the third annual fundraiser will be broadcast across major networks September 10.

The Stand Up To Cancer campaign is organized by the Entertainment Industry Foundation. The star-studded anti-cancer telethon will be hosted by news anchors from three major networks: ABC's Diane Sawyer, NBC's Brian Williams and CBS's Katie Couric.

The event will feature musical performances by Stevie Wonder, Natasha Bedingfield, Queen Latifah, Aaron Neville and others -- as well as appearances by George Clooney, Will Smith, Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal and numerous other stars. Cancer survivors Christina Applegate and Lance Armstrong will also take part.

The telethon will be simultaneously broadcast on Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC -- as well as shown on cable channels such as E!, VH1, HBO and many more -- and will be featured live-streaming online (below).

Donors can contribute online or by phone. Money raised from the telethon will benefit Stand Up To Cancer's scientific partner, the American Association for Cancer Research, as the organization works to fund pioneering cancer research to save lives from the disease.

Supporters can also donate by bidding on items in the Stand Up To Cancer eBay auction.

The telethon begins at 8 p.m. EDT.

I'm all for any donations to fund actual research to find a cure for cancer. However, I was really disgusted by the political partisanship exhibited during the 2008 Stand Up 2 Cancer Telethon. It was during the presidential campaign, and Obama and McCain each made a video appearance. After Obama spoke, everyone went crazy. When McCain spoke, there was hardly any applause. HE IS AN ACTUAL CANCER SURVIVOR for whom there should have been much applause. I almost called to cancel my donation and will never make another to this particular entity.

Good point. Then Brave New Films attacked McCain for being a cancer survivor. Classy. I have no respect for BNF's Greenwald, and very little respect for most entertainers.

Rich people love this event... pushing us into a nation of beggars, asking for donations for anything that we want to get done. I bet in those socialist countries in Northern Europe they never ask for donations for anything.

I don't know that we'll ever be rid of cancer completely. It's such a fundamental process to existence. The fact that DNA can mutate and change is why we are here, and cell division is too. We'll always have mutating bodies and outside sources that affect our bodies. Maybe we can someday mitigate those influences as well as protecting against radiation and develop drugs to kill cancer cells or whatever, but I don't know that we can ever "cure" cancer, if you get my meaning.

But, who knows? I don't know jack about medicine and biology compared to people in the field.

Tonight's "StandUptoCancer" Show was a good effort. Appreciations to the super-stars who "stood up".

But to say we will ever "cure" all cancer is dishonest. We will cure individual cancer patients thank goodness. But we need MUCH more emphasis on PREVENTION!

Also most cancers are "caused" by multiple factors as any credible cancer scientist will readily agree with including this efforts super scientist team.

Thanks, Doc. But your wise words will NEVER become reality as long as disease research is tied hand and foot to the pharmaceutical industry, which isn't interested in curing ANYTHING. They're interested in TREATING, for as long as possible, and cashing in on the dependency of desperate sick people. Cancer is Exhibit A on this.

All these charities are just so much more slop for their trough, with a dollop of feel-good for celebs in need of good publicity.

I think that's too cynical. I can't imagine a conspiracy where every researcher and scientist in the world, as well as every news organization agrees to keep breakthroughs a secret because the pharmaceutical industry has them on the payroll. That strikes me as far fetched as anything can be. Plus, they would make a fortune off of a cancer cure, be heroes to the world, and would probably be excused from paying taxes ever again.

And anyone caught keeping a cancer cure under wraps would be banished to the moon or worse. I don't doubt that they would try to maximize profit from a cure, or even that there are people that couldn't care less care about finding a cure, but I can't see such a conspiracy succeeding. I think it's just damn hard to pin cancer down. Science isn't magic.

I'm doing my own "thing" to stand up to cancer.

I quit smoking 27 months ago today.

Cold turkey. After 43 years. Not a puff.

As a retired teacher on medicare, I need to be pro-active. Lost both a father and a husband to brain cancer. And am glad the "stars" call attention to the need for more funds.

Am patting myself on back, however.

grins.

Thanks. I think. grins.

I have, however, always been "smart."

Attempted to quit a number of times.

If you know anything about quitting smoking, it usually takes many efforts to quit before it finally "sticks."

And I used no patches or pills or drugs or hypnosis, etc.

Refused to substitute one drug for another.

Cold turkey is the only way I could quit, Finally.

None of the major network channels had it here, just one obscure cable channel, and only briefly. But then, Denver is much more progressive than central Florida. We just have crazy media-ho preachers!

“Stand Up 2 Cancer” took in $171,000,000, they gave back $16,000,000 in 2008. Please check out all the charities to see the truth.

The bulk of what they EIF received in 2008 was from the $100-million Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C)Telethon. EIF was founded in 1942, but began the SU2C initiative in 2008. Once the money was raised, requests for Dream Team applications were communicated. In June 2009, five Dream Teams were selected and awarded approximately$75-million. Later in the year, 13 Innovative Grant Awards were given out for approximately $750,000 each.

Azuthus interpretation of the financial report does not account for the SU2C fund raising in 2008 followed by the grant awards in 2009. Azuthus' insinuation is off the mark.

Is big Pharma keeping the cure from cancer at bey because it is a huge business. Or have we given up and decided it is just a way to thin the population?

Conk to answer your plea for attention most affiliate stations will feature local charity profiles such as here in San Francisco its two; Breast Cancer Emergency Fund and Zen Hospice Project! So keep your grump to what you know!

Amazing! All this effort. All these people. For what? To give money to an entity that has zero interest in curing cancer? To give yet more money to billionaires that surpress real cancer cures? Tremendous waste of time and resources.
