In life, being in the right place at the right time can come down to serendipity, but in travel, it is almost always the result of good planning. To avoid crowds and inflated prices, ShermansTravel.com editors recommend the period between high and low seasons when the weather is fine, places are still open and happy to welcome travelers, and you can explore a destination at your own pace. They call this magical time and space continuum the Sweet Spot, and make it a point to round up the best of them for their readers each season. Read on for their picks for the 40 best places to travel for fall value. Adapted from "40 Sweet Spots for Fall Value." Text and captions courtesy of ShermansTravel.com.

Like the blossoms that brighten this Southern belle's landscape every spring, Atlanta is a perennial rejuvenator, infusing her classic charm with modern style and welcoming visitors to her unique blend of history, dining, shopping, and adventure. Its grade-A Southern hospitality, historical roots (MLK was born here), modern-day attractions, and up-and-coming art scene are the city's major draws.

Why Go In Fall: With the summer heat gone, fall in Atlanta makes for enjoyable sightseeing, while the build up to the holiday season brings in throngs of shoppers from across the South.

Our backyard is the most we can afford this year.

Montenegro is a gorgeous country with beautiful people.

You forgot Panama! Off season prices mean that flying to this budget friendly country is even cheaper than normal - not to mention that it is one of the best times of the year for sport fishing and whale spotting. I just saw a fishing boat catch and release a HUGE marlin off the coast of Isla Palenque, a Panama island in the Gulf of Chiriqui.

Fall Vacation!? Who the hell can afford a vacation? Who can afford the air fare?

I went to the Big Island of Hawaii a couple of years ago in November. It's beautiful, and you can get really great deals on accommodations during that time of year.

I just got back from Argentina, and it was fabulous. Though getting there can be expensive, once you arrive it's like visiting a country where there's a 50% off sale -- on *everything*.

Thanks for giving me 38 vacations I can't afford.

Sorry, these still don't compare to the Blue Ridge Parkway/Appalachians. Especially not in Autumn.

The Balearics?? You must be totally daft. Everything closes in the islands from late September until early May. Most of the towns are deserted. One would have trouble finding a decent restaurant open. Also, I can tell you from experience, Mallorca (not Majorca) is known for very poor, rude service and low quality accommodations and meals. It lost the plot about 15 years ago. Try Turkey or Greece but not Mallorca.

Come to the Pacific Northwest! Drive up Hwy 101 along the Redwood highway. We have some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. And our best weather is in October and November.

Yes! You are absolutely right. I have no idea what this list is based on. Also, lots of places in the US to see fall foliage, including my native Adirondacks.

It's pretty where I live. I'll stay home, thanks. Much cheaper.

Okay, now that has to be possibly the weirdest and least useful list ever put together.

Totally agree. Go to France? Who would have thought of that. Might be helpful to mention where to go (and where not to).

And the Caribbean in fall? Great if a hurricane doesn't swing through.

Berlin is... cheap, cheaper even than Euro back waters. And for good reason: dirty, ugly, flat, poor and too far from anything worth seeing or doing...

Funny, I find it one of the three nicest European cities.

Why is there a caption under 'France' explaining why it would be a good place to visit? It's like advising the reader that air would be a good thing to breath.
