Michelle Obama, Laura Bush Honor Flight 93 Heroes At Crash Site

First Posted: 09/11/2010 6:26 pm Updated: 05/25/2011 5:35 pm

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (AP)— The victims of Flight 93 are an inspiration and all who visit the rural field where they died on Sept. 11, 2001, will now "see how a scar in the earth has healed," first lady Michelle Obama said Saturday at a memorial service at the crash site honoring the 40 passengers and crew.

Former first lady Laura Bush joined Obama in the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania, marking a rare joint public speaking appearance by two first ladies. Obama thanked her predecessor for helping the country through the difficult days following the attacks.

"May the memory of those who gave their lives here continue to be an inspiration to you and an inspiration to all of America," Obama said to the thousands gathered on a wind-whipped temporary memorial for the annual service.

Many in the crowd toted American flags or bunches of flowers. Family members wore buttons bearing their loved ones' pictures.

"It was clear that these 40 individuals were no strangers to sacrifice," Obama told the crowd, citing the presence of veterans, coaches and volunteers among them.

"Being a hero is not just a matter of faith, it's a matter of choice."

Future generations would come to the site, she said, to "see how a scar in the earth has healed."

"It is truly my prayer today that all who come here will be filled with hope," she said.

Obama and Bush met privately with the victims' families before the service. Obama greeted each one with a hug and her condolences.

"To have VIPs of their stature come to share the memorial service to our loved ones means a considerable amount to the families," said Gordon Felt, the president of the Families of Flight 93, whose brother died aboard the flight.

Bush told the crowd that "Americans have no division" on this day.

"Nine years ago, in this skies above this field and in Washington and in New York City, we saw the worst of our enemy and the best of our nation," she said. "In the face of terror, Americans chose to overcome evil."

Former President George W. Bush issued a statement Saturday saying he and his wife were thinking of and praying for the 9/11 victims and their families.

"On September 11, 2001, Americans awoke to evil on our shores," he said. "We recall the many acts of heroism on that day, and we honor those who work tirelessly to prevent another attack."

A moment of silence at the service near Shanksville, Pa., was broken with relatives reading aloud the names of the dead and a bell tolling for each one.

Flight 93 was en route from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco on Sept. 11, 2001, when hijackers seized control and redirected the plane toward Washington, D.C. But passengers fought back and the hijackers responded by crashing the plane about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

This year's service was held at what is known as the Western Overlook, a place where the FBI, first responders and the media gathered in the hours and days after the crash. The service was moved there this year from another temporary site because of the construction work under way.

Next year, the annual service is expected to take place at a memorial plaza, which will be part of the permanent memorial. When finished, the 2,200-acre national park will have a 93-foot tower at the entrance with wind chimes for each of the victims and a grove of trees.

Gerald Bingham, 67, of Churchill, Tenn., who lost his son, Mark, in the crash, said it meant a lot to him to have both Obama and Bush there. He said it was important that people remember the victims and support efforts to build the memorial.

"This is a story that needs to be told," Bingham said. "It's something we can all take a lesson from what they did on that plane."

Asked about the controversies over construction of a mosque near ground zero in New York City, and over a Florida pastor's now-canceled plans to burn copies of the Quran to mark the Sept. 11 anniversary, Bingham said he had no time to worry about such things.

"We're trying to move forward here," he said.

I'm not a conspiracy thoerist but why no memorial of flt 77 (the 1 that crashed into the pentagon). I never hear about the victims families, or see news reports post 9/11. After 9 years I'm doubting a little.

There is most certainly a flight 77 memorial. It is located at...surprise!!...the Pentagon.

Where do people like you come from? Pathetic...
01:12 AM on 09/14/2010
The memorial at the Pentagon has been there since the Fall of 2008. It's actually very peaceful...trees, water, benches and the names of all the victims...you should go there some time to see it...it exists.

all well and good except it wasn't a 'crash'
03:29 PM on 09/13/2010
What was it then?
12:18 AM on 09/19/2010
From the photos it's about a 14-feet diameter round blast which general consensus is had to have been created by a missile.

There is no plane wreckage or debris in the photos. Look them up.

14-ft before the ensuing collapse, by the way.

Actually, the troops love Michelle Obama for her (under appreciated, and under recognized) works with military families. For all the talk, talk, talk of supporting the troops, Republicans never lift a finger to help those families struggling with 3, 4, 5 tours of duty.

How come if the government's explaination of 911 was that a conpiracy of radical muslims did this isn't it ever referred to as a conspiracy theory? Believe it if you must, but call it what it is, a conspiracy. There's nothing but case after case of reasons why the People should not trust the recent ruling regimes and yet, on this one thing, for some reason, there is 100 percent trust. amazing.
04:56 PM on 09/15/2010
Radical muslims have takewn credit for 911 and for about 95% of terrorist attacks in the past twenty years and there is ocerwhelming proof that Atta and other muslims were behind 911.

Yeah , well, there isn't overwhelming proof that there were any bodies found at the the FL 93 crash site,or even one body, or even debris from a plane . Or overwhelming proof that tower 7 collapsed due to structural failure from a kitchen fire or debris from the main towers.
In fact, for evidence to be "overwhelming" there has to be evidence. There's nothing "overwhelming" about evidence that either no longer exists or evidence that didn't exist in the first place.

The only overwhelming evidence we have is who it was they profited from this.
12:22 AM on 09/19/2010
Radical muslims flew the planes. That's all. Someone has to let them in and someone has to provoke and enable the attack. Someone also had to make the intel unavailable and you may or may not have noticed in all your research that BBC published an article saying "We've just received word that the 2nd tower has collapsed" except it was 22 minutes before the 2nd tower collapsed.

To Mr. Bingham who lost his son on Flight 93, your words say it all . It is time to move forward.

I thought this was a class act. I expect no less from these two women. All the former first ladies have been invited to participate in different activities and they've expressed their appreciation for how the current FLOTUS reaches out.

Michell is a great first lady.
Most first ladies are just fine.
I can't really think of one that really sucked.
Some work harder than others, some are smarter than others.
Michelle and Hilary are very smart, accomplished, involved women.
Laura, Barbara, and Nancy were basically just housewives.
But that's ok too, they were not elected.

I was so impressed as usual by my FLOTUS. Her words were very kind and thoughtful. It was apparent that a lot of sympathy went into writing them.
I watched this ceremony on C-SPAN. When Michelle was done speaking she was moved to tears and was trying to wipe them away without being noticed.
She is one classy woman. So proud of her.

I have always respected Laura Bush, she seems to be her own person. With comments like I am republican by marriage. Admitting that she could/would vote for Obama. Publicly supporting her daughter's decision to make public she was voting for Obama. I take a very strong woman to be married to a man that is intellectually and morally inferior.
11:42 PM on 09/12/2010
I agree with you, Laura Bush is her own person. She may have voted for Obama (don't think the Bush family especially liked McCain), however I don't think she believes that she is married to a "man that is intellectually and morally inferior". I think history will be the judge, but read Tony Blair's book and expand your horizon.

I remember it was Mrs. Bush who came to Michelle's defense in that "proud of my country" comment some took way out of context.....Will alway like her for that.
