Clinton Portis: Ines Sainz Is 'Gonna Want Somebody' (AUDIO)

First Posted: 09/14/10 01:15 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:40 PM ET

Clinton Portis Ines Sainz

The NFL is currently investigating the alleged harassment of Azteca TV reporter Ines Sainz at a New York Jets practice. Sainz has since spoken about the ongoing controversy, but she is not the only one to weigh in.

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis spoke out about the situation on Tuesday. Talking on the Mike Wise Show on 106.7 The Fan, Portis explained that when there is a "nice woman" in a room with 53 men, they will "want to say something."

Portis didn't stop there. The Redskins star believes that Sainz was likely attracted to at least one of the Jets players. "You put a woman and you give her a choice of 53 athletes, somebody got to be appealing to her." he said. "Somebody got to spark her interest, or she's gonna want somebody. I don't know what kind of woman won't, if you get to go and look at 53 men's packages."

UPDATE: The NFL issued a statement on Portis's comments: "The comments are clearly inappropriate, offensive and have no place in the NFL. We have contacted the Redskins & they will discuss the matter directly w/Mr. Portis."

UPDATE, 3:39 PM ET: Portis has apologized for his remarks. "I was wrong to make the comments I did, and I apologize. I respect the job that all reporters do. It is a tough job and we all have to work and act in a professional manner. I understand and support the team on these issues."

Are male reporters allowed into the locker rooms of the WNBA?

It's true some of his comments were irrational and not well thought out, but i mean he didnt really say anything bad, he was just saying that it was nice to see a guest at their practice. Yes the comment "Somebody got to spark her interest, or she's gonna want somebody. I don't know what kind of woman won't, if you get to go and look at 53 men's packages." was a little provative and not well thought out, but he didnt sexually assault anyone, neither did any of the other jets player.

OK. The Jets football players were not gentleman. Once again slowly: The Jets Football Players were not Gentlemen. They didn't harm, assault, or threaten Ms Sainz. They just failed to behave in a perfect genteel respectful fashion at THEIR FOOTBALL PRACTICE! "They forgot themselves". In front of Ms Sainz, a woman who competed to be the most beautiful woman in the Universe! Do I wish they had better manners, stood up straight, had their uniforms were pressed, and made soft modulated comments about "how lovely Ms Sainz looks today and how delightful it is to have her as their guest"? Well, I don't really mind these pecadillos. IT'S FOOTBALL PRACTICE!

And, lets be fair to everyone involved. Here's a nice backgrounder about Ms Sainz. I was particularly interested in the part that talked about how " At The World Cup in Germany 2006 she became very popular with male viewers and sports stars due to her sexy outfits and flirtatious interview techniques."

This whole affair isn't passing the smell test.

I'm sick of hearing complaints women reporters have about being harassed in athletic locker rooms. The point is just stay out and interview the athletes when their done. They always act like they have some right to be there. Flip this the other way around, do you ever see male reporters in the locker room of female athletes? If you do, all you'll here is complaints why are their men in the women's locker room.

If a female reporter feels she has the right to be in the male athletes locker room, then everybody suck it up and deal with the comments. You have a bunch of guys, full of testosterone after the game, and here comes an attractive female while they're nude, showering, or getting changed. How do you think they are going to react.

How can a woman go into a locker room with naked men hanging out? I mean, honestly.

I would be MORTIFIED, if I accidentally walked into a locker room, and would never walk in knowingly. I mean, seriously....there are ways to get the interview without being around all the "packages."

Um, ladies, Clinton Portis does not speak for all of us. Moron.

Frankly, I think the only thing she was uncomfortable with is that she found herself surrounded by about 40
very big black men when all she had been thinking about was Sanchez....

I'm sorry to have to say that, but what else would make someone who has been using her physical attributes to climb the ladder of success uncomfortable...male nudity?  Get real.  Come ons?  Please, she has, in her own words, been building this image for 8 years...

I think the Jets and Redskins management are wrong to apologize or make an issue of this...If you can't stand the heat...stay out of the kitchen.

BTW I'm a white female who definitely believes in female equality...just not an Orwwellian version of it...

What a shallow, close-minded view. How about, maybe she was uncomfortable with the fact that half-naked, big men in general? What does them being black have to do with it? If I walked into a room with a bunch of big men in general, I'd be uncomfortable, regardless of race. Please don't assume that your prejudice towards men of color apply to other women, thanks.

I did not mean to imply that there was any reason to be more afraid of half naked black men than half naked white men...I was saying that sadly there are still women who feel that way.  Perhaps the issue is "If big men make you uncomfortable, why would you walk into a room full of them?"  An NFL locker room is no place for the faint of heart...

How about this novel idea - No reporters in the locker rooms period. I can't think of one locker room quote that has been that important over the years. Let the guys get their showers and get dressed and then talk to them after or on the walk to the bus.

Portis clearly has a point here:What other reason could there possibly be for a woman to go into men's locker except to measure penis sizes?

Portis, being a running back, makes a compelling case for limiting helmet to helmet contact and the effects of that on the human brain.

A burqa always makes a nice fashion statement - at least in countries where women are held accountable for men's sexual misbehavior. If she were covered head to toe, then would you all be satisfied that any sexual comments were "wrong" as opposed to "asked for"?

Of course not. She would have to be in a women's locker room or other women-only place to be absolved. Oh, wait...it's probably still her fault simply for being a woman.
08:58 AM on 09/17/2010
Wait, shouldn't we, the opinion makers, be allowed to judge the evidence for ourselves? I'd like to know if Mr. Portis' claims are true, and there is only one way to find out. C'mon boys, let's all see those pretty packages that you think are so desirable.

How hypocritical. The female reporter runs into a locker room full of jocks who are in various degrees of undress and somehow feels that this is ok. How about if we allow the male reporter to go into a female locker room in the same situation. OMG the howls from the female audience. Now see that the male reporter is black no doubt he would be charged with rape before he even set foot in that locker room. I have no use for this kind of so called shock factor media reporting it actually insults my intelligence. And to listen to those who fain displeasure at someone who spoke the truth, do you think that we are really that stupid.
10:19 AM on 09/17/2010
I totally agree with you. Seems like every year there's a complaint due to male athletes towards a female reporter that comes in to interview them in the locker room. You would never see a male reporter in the female locker room. I think we should though, just for drama sake.

She doesn't "somehow feel it's okay," it's become a necessary part of a sports reporter's job to go into the locker room. Should she be barred from doing part of her job because she's a woman?

Solution?? Take reporters out of the locker room. They don't belong there in the first place. They don't need to do it when covering women's sports, they don't need to do it in men's sports.

Portis only telling the truth!!!
07:26 AM on 09/17/2010
What a joke! What do you expect? These guys play football, not sit around and write articles all day. Portis you shouldn't apologize for telling the truth. People who are calling your comments rude are really the ones who are out of touch with reality.

We can extend this argument for all the other troubles they get into then. After all, it's not like they should have any self-control, empathy, professionalism, or accountability to their fan (especially the younger ones)....'cause they play football.
