David Schwimmer Talks About His Rape Movie 'Trust'

David Schwimmer Trust

TORONTO — David Schwimmer may be known as lovable goofball Ross on "Friends," yet he has gone back to his dramatic roots for his latest directing project on the searing rape story "Trust."

The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, chronicles a nightmare scenario for a couple (Clive Owen and Catherine Keener) after they discover the nice boy their 14-year-old daughter, Annie (Liana Liberato), met on a Web chat room actually is a grown man who lures her to a motel room for sex.

Schwimmer has been developing the story for seven years, inspired by his work with the Rape Foundation in Santa Monica, California. He hopes to land the film in theaters as a cautionary tale to parents about the dangers children face online, where sexual predators can stalk victims with anonymity.

In talking with families of victims and FBI agents investigating such cases, Schwimmer found that the men preying on children online often are husbands and fathers themselves.

"A lot of these guys are married, have families. It's more frightening than the predator that's usually depicted in films, which is this weird, greasy loner that lives alone or with mom," Schwimmer said. "The fact is that they are teachers, they are coaches, they're priests, they're professionals, they're pediatricians."

In the film, Annie's stalker uses her passion for volleyball to gain her trust, pretending at first that he's a 16-year-old volleyball player, then stringing her along as he gradually confesses he is 20 and later 25. By the time they meet, Annie has become so smitten that she is able to overlook the fact that her online boyfriend is old enough to be her father.

Owen found the story devastating, particularly since he has two young daughters himself, the oldest recently venturing online when she signed up for Facebook.

"I found it deeply upsetting, just as an idea. I think something like that happening to your daughter is like a death of some kind," Owen said. "I don't know how anybody would ever really, properly recover from something like that."

Schwimmer, 43, who directed episodes of "Friends" and other television projects, made his big-screen filmmaking debut with the 2007 comedy "Run, Fatboy, Run."

While his role as perpetually lovesick Ross on "Friends" made him a star and his best-known big-screen role is providing the voice of the nervous giraffe in the "Madagascar" animated movies, Schwimmer started out as a serious actor.

"I was actually surprised that I was cast in a sitcom, because all of my experience at university and in the theater company I started in Chicago was all drama," Schwimmer said. "I'd never really done comedy, so it was just ironic to me that now I'm known as that funny guy. But you know, I have no complaints. I had a great time."

As a matter of fact, I am.
Are you so pre·sump·tu·ous that you think this guy cares if you defend him?
Broke the big words down so you'll have an easier time reading them.

I love David Schwimmer. He always made me laugh. I wish him well. I miss "Friends."

I'm tired of the reruns. I want to see the movie!

"The fact is that they are teachers, they are coaches, they're priests, they're professionals, they're pediatricians."

He is right, except as he is pointing he forgot "actor/directors."

I never watched the friends - or rather, I only watch a tiny bit every so ofter. I could not stand his man/baby character. Maybe he will be better behind the camera.

It's odd that 43 year old David is making a movie about older men sexualizing young girls and he is engaged to a 24 year old. Just sayin. Other than that, I commend him for bringing light to an important subject.

24 is a consenting adult, that is old enough to make mature decisions.

I can't watch rape movies. Even if they are supposed to bring awareness-I'm already aware and it upsets me too much to watch them.

No-talent bum. They're "priests"? Yeah, and rabbis too Davey boy. Great pic. You look like a parking lot attendant.

I didn't find him funny as Ross except for the one where he plays his music on his synthesizer. Joey wasn't funny either except for the one where he says that he's going commando. Phoebe was more bizarre than funny except for the one where she sang truth to the school kids. Monica was dull except for the one where she fires the mean guy.
Rachel and Chandler were always hilarious and should have been the Tracy and Hepburn of televiision.
I hope nobody sees Swimmer's name over the title and goes into the theater expecting a comedy.

I couldn't agree with you less. Aniston was one of the least funny and carried by the rest of the cast. Perry was okay very "quippy."

Why did you even watch? While Rachel and Chandler were my favorites, it was the interaction of the group that made this show iconic.

Progressive is good; regressive, not so much.

Nice to see someone working on a project instead of swimming in celebrity.

I've always respected Schimmer. He's the co-founder of Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago, and I've seen several plays there where he's been involved.

You know, this is actually a well written article, a serious, important subject to bring into the forefront for the sake of our vulnerable young women and girls - I don't even mind that David Schwimmer is the one doing the project - he has proven himself to be serious about his craft as a director. All of this going for you on the positive side and what do you do? You torpedo the whole thing right from the start with the most crass, poorly written headline I've seen on this topic, ever, complete with a totally inappropriate photo! Egads! You make it appear as if Schwimmer is doing so badly that he now has to direct porn! I hate to even consider the possibility, but its even far worse if this was a deliberate attempt to do a sleaze bait and switch to increase site traffic!

I love that the ad accompanying this story is a typical American Apparel prepubescent model in underwear advert. Perfect!

Seriously though, it's great that Schwimmer is taking this subject matter to the big screen, but what would have even more impact would be if someone would take on the larger incidence of acquaintance rape. Online predators exist to be sure, but rape victims are by far more likely to know their attacker, and this is rarely something that's discussed in depth.
