The 11 Wealthiest Countries In The World By Financial Assets: Allianz (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/15/10 11:47 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:40 PM ET

Global wealth imbalances are shrinking in the wake of the financial crisis, according to a new report that measures data from 50 countries which make up 87 percent of global GDP.

At the end of 2009, the financial assets of private households in rich countries had plunged by 7.4 percent since before the crisis. Per capita financial assets in poor countries, by contrast, grew through 2008 and by the end of 2009 were almost 25 percent higher than they were before the crisis, says the 2010 Global Wealth Report by German insurer Allianz.

"The financial crisis dealt a particularly savage blow to the financial assets of highly-developed industrial countries," Allianz says in the report. Per capita wealth in Greece -- the "biggest loser" of the financial crisis -- has plummeted 14 percent since 2007. Right behind them is the United States, with a 12 percent loss, and Spain, with a nine percent loss since 2007.

This is not to say that the financial crisis closed the income gap between rich and poor countries. Rich countries, according to the report, still account for around 90 percent of overall global financial assets. Which explains why, overall, global financial assets -- that is, stocks, bank accounts and insurance -- at the end of 2009 were still about four percent lower than they were in 2007.

But, whereas at the beginning of the decade financial assets in the rich countries were 135 times higher than in the poor countries -- this number has now fallen to 45, says Allianz.

Still, in absolute terms, the global prosperity gap is huge, and a very small number of countries command a very large share of the world's financial assets. The following are the eleven countries that own the largest share of global financial assets:

11. Netherlands
1 of 12
Financial Assets Global Share: 1.85%

Financial Assets (In Billions): $1978.2252

Financial Assets 2009 Year-Over-Year Change: 5.2%

Financial Assets Per Capita: $119,236

GDP Per Capita: 46,228

Is this study based on assets before or after debt load ?
Id be interested to know if liabilities were even given a thought in coming up with this ' Rosie Scenario ' useless study.

Land of the free & the home of the brave? It hurts to see a country other than mine that i love for its history for upholding freedom, rule of law and due process end up becoming such a bully not only to other countries but also its own people,Every american ive met from japan, france, germany, italy, norway seem to be a bit shell shocked at the living standards and security of life of especially europeans,What freaks me the most is the fact that they all want to spend the rest off there lives not in america but these other countries...which brings me to the question if america was really top dog in the world then why not live at home and go see the world rather than the other way around.Freedom is all about equality, having the right to live under ur own roof, own ur own car,the right to get paid for ur own sweat .Bravery is all about being selfless and doing the right thing regardless of the consequence,38.94% of global share and still so much wealth unequality, thats ubsurd, why reform now rather than b4 the recession and mind you all amaricans i mentioned above where all friends i met way before the recession.....

America the land of the free & the home of the brave has been a debtor nation for years. We started 2 wars that we couldn't pay for. We foolishly subsidize countries with money we don't have for what return? Some of these countries have more available funds than we do. We're disliked by most of the world. We are insufferable braggerts. Only those who have traveled throughout Europe can really understand the reality of how we're perceived or the relaxed quality of life in a beautiful country with better health care & much better vacation & holiday benefits. Greed, corruption, lobbyists, career & unqualified politicans, fine print, maximum APR's, late fees, excessive taxes, inequitable tax laws & tell me how a Mom & Pop business can compete with Wal-Marts ... combined with apathy has almost eradicated our middle class. If we're so great, why are we living from paycheck to paycheck? Why does our insurance, cost of living & every single other thing we need to buy go up while our salaries, if we have jobs, stay stagnant? Years without cost of living raises, huge job stress & backbreaking workloads to make up for the cut employees & I'm "lucky" to not get a 5% pay cut this year. I love my country but we need to take a good look at ourselves & if we just have to boast, we could say how great we were.

This just posted (ironically) the same time we find out that 1 in 7 Americans are living in complete poverty. I ask people who still posses some reasoning function in their brain to ask themselves JUST WTF IS WRONG with this picture?

First, what exactly is considered the poverty line?? 20.000? 30,000? You do realize that 20 thousand a year is more than most people make in the world could ever dream of making in a lifetime. No nation in history has ever collected this much wealth and power

daultman463 - Your comment seems to lack factual information. Are you a wealthy Republican? Are you aware that roughly 2/3'rds of US is owned by foreign corporations? I've lost count...how many trillions of dollars in debt are we? Where's all that wealth & power you mentioned? You might find this site helpful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_inequality

Still America's average income is arguably the highest in the world. Obviously we're talking about average. If you put a Gates or two with thousands of homeless people, stat-wise they're all millionaires ON AVERAGE. In short, it's all about distribution.

I think unless you have lived abroad, it is difficult to understand what a behemoth the U.S. is. These numbers do put it in perspective. I get a chuckle when commentators on TV are alarmed about "America falling behind". That is not to say we should be smugly sitting around and boasting about our international dominance. In fact, what make America great is its lack of pretense. Many other cultures constantly remind their population how great their country is or was. Americans just go about doing what they do, be transparent about their flaws and control 40% of the wealth in the world. I hope I never wake up to the day that the TV announcer say: "America, the greatest nation on the earth who is wealthier and more powerful than any other country in the world." Americans are mostly nonplussed about their position in the world and I hope it stays that way.

Twofold answer:
Yes, you can scientificly, mathematically challenge all these rankings. But as one of the Davos WEF scientists pointed out last week: They only include that ranking, because it creates some media attention and thus promotes the scientific background behind that ranking. Honestly, how many keep track of the latest, regular scientific releases in the according journals. I guess, as humans, we are simply a playfully competative lot.
Secondly - as a good natured side jab - I wonder: So we Europeans/ rest of the world, are misled when taught that Americans at times refer to the U.S. as "God's own country" ? Which, in my eyes, resembles pretty much "greatest nation on the earth". Because if there were Americans referring to their nation as "God's own country" then ... uhm ... well ... no, scratch that, I don't even want to ask why that lacks pretense. :)

The US, while indeed the wealthiest nation according to a matrix of certain criteria, still manages to squander its good fortune on tat. Its so-called 'quality of life' rating is exceeded by a number of countries further down the rich list (as indeed are such mundane matters such as life expectancy and child mortality). We do have the largest and most wasteful automobiles, a fact which is no doubt a sort of salve for certain simple minded folk who view NASCAR as a religion or a statement of national pride.

Without destroying any of the US's famed entrepreneurial spirit can you imagine what a truly exceptional country the US would be if it just adopted 1 or 2 things other countries?
I'll use Australia as an example.

1.The Glass-Steagall Act. (Yes Yes I know this is ancient US legislation but a couple of years after Bob Rubin locked in his retirement plan by ditching it, Australia strengthened its version of G-S. Result- No roulette. No GFC down here. Banks all returned super profits without theft.

2. Section 52 of the Trades Practises Act : Misleading and Deceptive Conduct in Trade. Having this on the US statutes would have left Ms Warren happily ensconced and un-bothered at HLS teaching about the sound structure of US contract, bankrupcy and commercial law.

3.Health Care. OK It would be almost impossible to achieve the equivalent of Australia's Medicare now, but a Public Option would truly kick arse-ish

4. Tax.

5. And while your at it make it Federal and find a way to deal the states out of the tax pack

6. Direct federal funding of lots of high quality tertiary institutions.

7. Unions

8. Compulsory retirement savings where the employee must contribute, the employer must contribute and the Government must contribute.

The US became a great and wonderful middle class nation partly because it was flexible and that flexibility was the key to it's resilience. You know the rest.

Sounds like the basis for a rational, balanced, productive society. As a nation, we were well on that way for a time.

No argument here, and I'm confident Australians don't argue vehemently against those sound, balanced proposals.

But you left out #9: Give Murdoch the boot. Then the other 8 will be possible.

Sure America can afford health care, if the United States cut it's defence spending in half it would still spend more on defence than any other country on earth. But it would have enough cash left over... cripes to pave the streets in gold!

USA is in the very last place of lists of countries by current account balance. In my bookkeeping that means broke. China is # 1 with 371,800 billion US Dollars followed by Germany and Japan all with plus accounts. Samoa is the #1 country next in the minus column with the USA with 371,200 million dollars and Spain is last before the US, then the UK and then Italy. The war with Afghanistan costs the US 3.5 billion per week, how about Iraq and Pakistan? The million dollars promised to Haiti never happened, we are broke. Can anyone fathom this and then still believe in fairytales that the USA is the richest country. And our politicians created this but what is mindboggling that we will vote for either party again and again.

IMO this is somewhat misleading. IS the US the wealthiest nation in terms of assets of the government (Which I would find strange inasmuch as we currently the biggest debtor nation) OR does the US "Shelter" the greatest number of rich people, so many of whom would not have what they have without government contracts, investment credits, etc? I think it is the latter.
