Floyd Mayweather Charged With Multiple Felonies

LAS VEGAS — Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was hit Thursday with three more felony charges in a domestic violence case that already had him facing a theft charge.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger significantly raised the ante in the case alleging that Mayweather hit and threatened the life of his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, and threatened to beat two of their children during a pre-dawn argument at the woman's home a week ago.

Mayweather, 33, is one of boxing's most recognizable figures, with a record of 41-0 and 25 knockouts. The welterweight goes by the nickname "Money" and earned more than $20 million in May in one fight in Las Vegas against "Sugar" Shane Mosley

Mayweather remained free on $3,000 bail pending arraignment Nov. 9 following his arrest last Friday on a felony grand larceny charge.

Authorities alleged he took cell phones belonging to Harris and two of their children following the altercation. That felony charge carries a possible sentence of five years.

The new criminal complaint filed Thursday added two felony coercion and one felony robbery charge along with one misdemeanor domestic battery and three misdemeanor harassment charges.

Convictions on all eight charges would increase the possible penalty Mayweather could face if convicted of all charges to 34 years.

Mayweather's lawyer, Richard Wright, told The Associated Press he hadn't seen the new complaint and declined immediate comment.

Wright has previously denied wrongdoing on Mayweather's behalf.

Police initially labeled the scuffle with Harris a domestic battery case after she told police Mayweather was angry about her relationship with another man when he confronted her at the Las Vegas home where Harris and the children live.

Mayweather wanted to evict her from the house, which he owns, Harris said.

The new charges name the couple's 10-year-old and 9-year-old sons as victims of coercion, for alleged threats to beat them if they called 911 or left the apartment during the scuffle.

Under Nevada law, coercion is when a person compels or forces someone to do something they have a legal right to do.

The harassment charges allege that Mayweather threatened Harris and the two children, and the battery charge alleges Mayweather grabbed Harris by her hair, hit her and twisted her arm.

The couple had three children, now ages 7 to 10, during what Harris characterized for authorities as a 15-year relationship. She said she lived with Mayweather for seven years before separating in May.

Mayweather also made headlines earlier this month with an online video laced with expletives and racial rants against boxing rival Manny Pacquiao.

i'm beginning to think floyd is on roids due to his increasingly irrational and uncontrolled behavior. i bet he'd test dirty right this very minute. under his professed desire to clean up boxing i hope he's tested soon so we will at least be able to rule out steroids as a reason for his domestic violence. those poor children. i hope a roid enhanced walking lethal weapon isn't right now back at their house breaking in and laying a mansized beating on their frail little bodies.

taking cell phones is a felony worth five years, and yet illegally entering this country and using up its social services is a misdemeanor? WTF?

I would like to see some sports including boxing term back down to realistic money outlays. There is no excuse why the tickets can be lowered, the promoters take less money and the boxers take less money. If we keep giving these people millions and millions and millions of dollars it's not hard to see in so many cases what they turn into. Many great South American boxers turn into drug addicts and others into brain dead walkie talkies

I'll withhold judgment until we know more about the evidence. If the DA is grandstanding [think Duke lacrosse rape trial], then shame on him and drop the charges. If Mayweather, a professional boxer, threatened his 9-year-old son with physical violence, he should spend some time in prison. Please bear in mind that Mayweather is trained to use his fists as weapons by his profession, and could probably punch a 9-year-old boy hard enough to kill him. If he really did threaten his child, that could be construed as a death threat. WE JUST DON'T KNOW. The big question is, is there any physical evidence or just this woman's word? Also, what, if anything, have the children said and to whom? Until we know more, there's not enough for me to make an accurate judgment.

Another case of double standard justice. Remember the Barbie Bandits? Two cute white, teen girls who robbed a bank inside a Krogers in Acworth, GA. They got two years. TWO. For drug charges and for ROBBING A BANK. They are trying to get Floyd for 30 for taking back his own cell phones.

Oh you do weave a twisted tale.

Anyone who breaks into someone else's house to retrieve property that he GAVE to that person is committing a burglary.
06:16 PM on 09/17/2010
It's his house. He owns the house and pays the bills there. He and the kids mother just broke up in May after living together for 7 years. He was po'd because he found texts to and from her new man on the phone he paid for in the house he owns and was letting her stay in. She probably should get her own place before hooking up with someone else, especially since they only broke up in May and he was still supporting her. The original charge was theft of a cell phone and now they've escalated it to felony grand theft and felony coercion and others. They may have a legitimate domestic violence incident, you never know who said what to the cops and who did what until the facts shake out. But the new charges seem harsh, potentially 34 years for a domestic dispute, c'mon.

Did I say what he is alleged to have done isn't a crime, you dolt? No. I said that giving them 2 years while trying to give him 30 is absurd. Nice strawman, though. But I'm not buying. I fail to understand why the prison keeps giving you internet access.

I hope it isn't true. I'm a boxing fan which basically makes me a Mayweather fan. I hold a man as powerful as he is to an even higher standard than the average man when it comes to domestic violence.

i'm a boxing fan which is why i am not a mayweather fan. he's damaging the sport not only with his ridiculous behavior out of the ring but with his usually lacklustre performances in the ring not to mention his ridiculous demands and his preference for fighting smaller or washed up fighters.

the worst day in modern boxing history is the day de la hoya let floyd "fight" him and made him a start. you remember... the night delahoya was winning with the jab alone and then suddenly forgot how to throw a jab and floyd squeaked by with a "win".
