The New York Times:

Opened with little fanfare over the summer, the library -- the first ever at a major international airport -- has 1,200 books in more than two dozen languages, all by Dutch authors or on subjects relating to the country's history and culture.

As an MLS student, I see the need for libraries to continue to innovate and adapt to their patrons. This is such a great idea and needs to be expanded on. I love the idea of libraries in airports. While I like the idea of the library having materials that pertain to the country the airport is in, there is even room to expand the idea. Can you imagine a world wide library system housed in airports where travelers can checkout a book at one airport, read during their flight, and return it at the next? How great would that be.

what an awesome idea--I am a degreed librarian and think that there should be libraries (access to quality books) everywhere. I am actually trying to put together a proposal to present to my local YMCA that would establish a small diet/exercise library there. People would have access to health journals, exercise books/magazines, and eventually include access to the internet so they could look up health related issues. They could meet with their trainers or dietitian and plan out their new healthy lifestyle and have all the tools right there..what do you guys think?

Great idea! Way to be innovative in reaching patrons. We need more librarians out there like you. :-)

Don't most airports already have small bookstores to begin with?

The difference is that all the materials in this library are related to the country and are FREE for anyone to borrow while there without the guilt of reading a book for sale that you aren't going to buy.
