Netcare, South African Hospital, Charged in Organ Trafficking

Kidney

DONNA BRYSON   09/16/10 12:28 PM ET   AP

JOHANNESBURG — A major South African hospital chain and its chief executive have been charged after years of investigation into a human organ trafficking case that stretched from Israel to South Africa to Brazil, hospital officials and police said Thursday.

Police spokesman Vish Naidoo said 11 suspects were ordered to appear in court in November. He refused to name them, but the board of directors of the Netcare hospital chain said in a statement that the parent company, its chief executive officer, Dr. Richard Friedland, and its subsidiary in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal received subpoenas on Wednesday.

"The board has been advised that the allegations made are unjustified and that neither Netcare nor Dr. Friedland are guilty of any wrongdoing," the statement said, adding that Friedland would not be relieved of his duties pending trial.

"The board fully supports Dr Friedland and expresses its regret that the prosecuting authorities have seen fit to press charges against him and Netcare, particularly in view of the unqualified cooperation which Netcare and Dr. Friedland have given to the investigating and prosecuting authorities to assist in those investigations," said Netcare, which operates hospitals across South Africa, among them some of the continent's most respected facilities.

The case first became known in 2003. That year and the next, arrests were made in Brazil and South Africa. Investigators said Brazilians who passed a medical checkup were flown to South Africa, where their kidneys were extracted for transplants into Israeli patients. Eastern Europeans were also donors.

It is believed more than 100 illegal kidney transplants were performed at Netcare's St. Augustine Hospital in the eastern coastal city of Durban in 2001 and 2002.

Police spokesman Naidoo said three people – a recipient and two "coordinators" – were convicted in 2003. The police probe, which involved investigators from several foreign countries, did not stop there, he said.

Naidoo said the case involved selling organs, which is illegal in South Africa and most of the rest of the world.

There is a high demand and small supply of kidneys, which can be taken from a living donor. The black market is believed to be thriving around the world. India in particular has been a source of organs, with some reports of poor laborers being duped or forced into giving up kidneys, which were then transplanted into wealthy people who would come to India from around the world for the operations.

The U.N. World Health Organization calls the shortage of organs "a universal problem."

Lets admit it, White south Africans are primitive creatures. They have not progressed enough. They remind me of the primitive culture of the N azi Germans. They are uncouth and un sophisticated.

I was surprised to see that it wasn't a U.S. hospital. My experience is that they will charge for anything, at five times the rate you could get it at the drugstore across the street. It's just a question of time before they figure out how to remove and sell my right arm.

"Israeli citizens in need of kidney transplants would be brought to South Africa for transplants at StAugustine's Hospital. They paid kidney suppliers for these operations . [the kidneys] were initially sourced from Israeli citizens, but later Romanian and Brazilian citizens were recruited as their kidneys were obtainable at a much lower cost than those of the Israeli suppliers," the charge sheet states.

Compare the above article, which has omitted the details of the Israeli connection, to this article from The times of South Africa:

Of course..that kind of reporting is actually against the Terms of Service for HuffPo..it is considered 'hate speech' and being derogatory to any specific ethnic group.

Israel really did themselves a service by labeling itself as a 'Jewish State'..you can't criticize Israel without being 'anti-Jew'..
Of course, the moment it suits them it 'isn't' a "Jewish State" too..so they get to have it both ways whenever they like..either you cannot criticize the State of Israel without defaming all the Jews in Israel because it is a Jewish State, but then they say "Just because an Israeli does ___ doesn't mean Isreal is to blame."

The fact is, however, that Israeli organ harvesting—sometimes with Israeli governmental funding and the participation of high Israeli officials, prominent Israeli physicians, and Israeli ministries—has been documented for many years. Among the victims have been Palestinians.

is this article saying that some jews receive the organs of others?
another commentator asked why such a need existed that was far greater than organs available.

i found this as to jewish funeral customs.

Organ donation is permitted in the case when an organ is needed for a specific, immediate transplant. In such a case, it is a great mitzvah for a Jew to donate organs to save another person's life. Organ donation is not necessarily limited to dead people: Someone who can afford to spare a kidney, for example, may donate one to someone in need.

Yet in consideration of the prohibition against desecrating the body, it is forbidden to simply donate to an "organ bank," where there is no specific, immediate recipient. Furthermore, for general medical research or for students to practice in medical school, a Jew is not permitted to donate organs.

Even when there is a specific, immediate transplant, you need to be careful, because oftentimes in order to obtain organs as fresh as possible, a doctor will remove the organ before the patient is actually "dead" according to Jewish law. The doctor is therefore effectively killing the patient, which is of course forbidden.

The bottom line is that each case comes with its own myriad of detailed halachic factors. So before gong ahead with any procedure, you need to consult with a rabbi well-versed in Talmud and Jewish law. It is clearly not as simple as blankly signing an organ donation card.

Maybe there should be a religious or ethnic quota on Organ Transplants..
You know, "Well, I'm sorry Mr. Goldman, we've already transplanted all our Jewish Organs out for this month, unless a Jewish kidney donor comes along in the meantime, you'll have to wait until next month- you see, we only got 1000 Jewish kidneys this month from the dead, and we've already used them all- I mean, we COULD give you this non-religious organ right here from an atheist who donated to an organ bank, but that would violate our strict religious guidelines..perhaps you should seek to influence your people to donate organs to the organ bank more regularly."

If your particular ethnic and religious group doesn't donate enough organs to fill the need of that group, then why should they get organs from others?

It only seems fair :P

this is puzzling:

''it is forbidden to simply donate to an "organ bank," where there is no specific, immediate recipient''.

what is the shelf life of a kidney, heart, liver, or heart in these ''organ banks"?

Quotes from Nancy Scheper-Hughes, Chancellor’s Professor of Medical Anthropology at the University of California Berkeley, the founder of Organ Watch:

"Israel is at the top...It has tentacles reaching out worldwide...[they] had and still have a pyramid system at work that’s awesome…they have brokers everywhere, bank accounts everywhere; they’ve got recruiters, they’ve got translators, they’ve got travel agents who set up the visas.”

AWESOME link..
With numbers to back it up;

Israelis buy more organs than any other nation, Jews give less organs than any other ethnicity per capita because it is against their religion;

The sick thing is if they really believe they will be punished after they die if they donated an organ, they apparently don't care about those they are getting the organ from and what heppens to THEM after THEY die, right?

To the organ-shopper it's best to get an organ from someone who isn't a Jew as it is, because you wouldn't want your fellow Jew to be punished after they die..let's just pick up a drifter..

SICK just SICK.

Yet again, the Corporate media exclude all mention of this latest practice.

if a organ is only viable for 4 hours...  how are they flying them to Israel from south America, or south Africa?

if it takes 5 to 16 hours to fly... how are these organs still viable?

From my reading of the story they didn't fly the organ, they flew the people there alive and bought their organs from them..and THEN surgically removed them..which is even creepier than taking them from a dead person..

To think there's someone walking around with a scar on thier flank..
"Yeah, I sold my kidney- didn't need it; did you know you have two of them? It's like you're born with money inside you.."

But if there is any bad news about a Christian religion, they (certain newspapers) will jump to publish it....but not an article that says anything about Isreal....why would that be so? Why would they do that. Isreal is a good country with good people, but they are not all good. Like in any country or any religion, there are bad and good in all of them. Why hide the truth?

The Toronto Star had a headline for this news this morning, but when clicking on the link, the page could not be found (error message). Now, the Toronto star has only articles about the wait people need to wait for an organ, their suffereing while they wait, etc. etc. But the truth, about this horrible organ stealing ring, that newspaper simply took it away. Can a newspaper do that? Can they omit news, and substitute it for a totally different view - one sided, and hiding a truth? Why would they do that?

"Investigators said Brazilians who passed a medical checkup were flown to South Africa, where their kidneys were extracted for transplants into Israeli patients."
It appears that, because of religious scruples, Israelis are approximately half as likely to consent to donate organs.
However, they seem to be willing to accept the organs of others.
Every so often their organ harvesting operations come to light at HP and some comments are made about Israel bashing.
If Israel feels sensitive about criticism why does it persist in drawing down criticism upon itself?

In the case of Nicaragua the criticizable behavior must be something other than organ transplants:
Organ Transplants coming to Nicaragua
http://www-usa.laprensa.com.ni/archi...s/238088.shtml

Nicaragua along with El Salvador and Honduras are the only countries in Central America that do not allow for Organ Transplants. However in the coming year a group of doctors from "Hospital Lenín Fonseca" will be heading over to Guatemala to learn this procedure. In the mean time, Nicaragua needs to pass a law that allows for Organ transplants, from victims of accidents. They will also need to promote voluntary organ transplant, which means that people will need to carry a organ transplant card in order to have their organs removed if they are in an accident.

In addition the government will have to help with the Multi-million dollar investment to the equipment and facilities in order to accomodate this procedure.

A organ transplant has a value of about U$20,000 dollars, however it would be free in Nicaragua.

Vlady, could you enlighten me?

Or, did I totally misunderstand your message?

There are currently 88 children that need a new kidney in Nicaragua.

Who removed my post?
I explained that the organs were not removed from dead bodies, but donors, being paid for their kidneys, were flown to South Africa where the transplant took place..

Someone is engaging in some serious censorship of the facts around here.
