Sarah Palin 2012 Presidential Run? 'I Would Give It A Shot'

Sarah Palin 2012

Sarah Palin tends to shy away from questions regarding her presidential ambitions, but not on Friday, when she told Fox News that given some vague preconditions, she'd be willing to "give it a shot" in 2012.

In Des Moines, Iowa, for the annual Reagan Dinner fundraiser -- a perennial destination for Republican presidential hopefuls -- the ex-governor and 2008 vice-presidential nominee said she'd be "willing" to go head to head with President Barack Obama if voters think she's "the one."

"If the American people were to be ready for someone who is willing to shake it up, and willing to get back to time-tested truths, and help lead our country towards a more prosperous and safe future and if they happen to think I was the one, if it were best for my family and for our country, of course I would give it a shot," Palin said. "But I'm not saying that it's me. I know I can certainly make a difference without having a title. I'm having a good time doing exactly that right now."

Palin has shown little hesitation when it comes to endorsing candidates -- most of them backed by the tea party -- in Republican primaries this year. Recent polling, however, suggests her support may be a double-edged sword. In a CBS poll released Wednesday, only 21 percent of respondents reported a favorable opinion of Palin, and even among self-identified conservative respondents her favorables rose no higher than 50 percent.

With that in mind, the White House may be happy to pit Obama against Palin in two years. Earlier Friday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about the ex-governor's trip to Iowa and said Palin "may well be, in all honesty, the most formidable force in the Republican Party right now."

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), another tea party kingmaker, told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren Thursday night, "I'm not going to run for president." But DeMint quickly reopened the door to a 2012 bid, adding, "I have no intentions, no plans, but I don't want to think past 2010 right now."

The AP reports on Palin's speech:

After helping propel several upstart Republican contenders to recent primary victories, Sarah Palin said Friday that it's time for Republicans to unite now that primary season is over.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee delivered a fiery speech to about 1,400 people at the Iowa Republican Party's Reagan dinner, the party's largest annual fundraiser. She noted that the general elections are less than two months away and stressed that Nov. 2 should be the focus of all Republicans.

"This is our movement, this is our moment," she said. "The time for unity is near. It is time to unite and make government work."

Her appearance in the state where precinct caucuses traditionally launch the presidential nominating season drew intense attention, but she found time to joke about it. If she laced up her running shoes, she said, the headlines would read: "Palin in Iowa, decides to run."

Palin has been coy about her presidential intentions and masterful at keeping her name in the news since she abruptly resigned as Alaska's governor in 2009. She's mixed political fundraisers and candidates' campaign events with speeches in which she commands fees as high as $100,000.

A string of Palin-endorsed candidates won during recent primary elections, including a double win Tuesday in Delaware and New Hampshire. On Friday, she stressed that Republicans needed to come together after a tough primary season.

"Did you ever lose big growing up?" she asked the crowd. "You lose some and you win some. For the sake of our country, America's primary voters have spoken and those internal power struggles need to be set aside."

She also attacked what she called a media establishment that wouldn't give conservatives a break.

"It's been made abundantly clear that those who hold some pretty common-sense views won't be heard," she said.

State Republican Chairman Matt Strawn said attendance at the annual dinner spiked after it was announced that Palin would be speaking at the event.

Palin is far from alone in taking early steps to court Iowa activists. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has made multiple trips to the state, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has put a staff member in Iowa and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania all have visits in the works.

President Barack Obama's spokesman said Friday that he believes Palin was testing the waters in Iowa for a possible presidential run. Press secretary Robert Gibbs said this is the time of year when potential candidates head to the politically important state to gauge the likelihood of a campaign.

Gibbs said it's clear that Palin can rally the very conservative elements of the Republican base and she may be "the most formidable force" in the GOP right now.

“Sarah Palin Explains Why She Would Run For President - "A reason to run is if nobody else were to step up with the solutions that are needed (WHAT SOLUTIONS SARAH?) to get the economy back on the right track (HIRE BRISTOL & TODD FOR EVERYTHING) and to be so committed to our national security that they are going to do all that they can including fighting those on the extreme left (WAGE WAR AGAINST OUR OWN CITIZENS YOO BETCHA!) who seem to want to dismantle some of our national security tools that we have in place," Palin explained to Fox News's Greta Van Susteren. "If nobody else wanted to step up, Greta, I would offer myself up in the name of service to the public." (IF GOD TELLS ME TO)
Palin went on to clarify that she would never seek the office for any selfish desire - (OH NO, NEVER... LIKE SHE WOULD NEVER PUT HER NAME ON A BOOK SHE DIDN'T WRITE)
Then I WOULD QUIT when the job got too tough or time consuming...or a better paying gig came along where I could enrich myself...then too I would ABANDON the voters like I did in Alaska that I so loved to serve and also too I would again ABORT my personal pledge and responsibility. TRUST THE HISTORY.....she's a QUITTER and a LIAR. Has she tithed the church 10% of her ill gotten millions yet?”

Newsmax kicks off webcast series with Sarah Palin interview
*
In an email from editor Christopher Ruddy, Newsmax announced that on October 12 it will begin a special pre-election online webcast series which will continue through the day of the midterm elections on November 2.

The premiere webcast event for the webcast series, “Make America Great Again,” will feature an exclusive interview with Gov. Sarah Palin. Ruddy reminds his email recipients that “Make America Great” was the slogan fore Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign. It should be no coincidence, then, that President Reagan’s son Michael will be the series' host. Ruddy promises that in addition to Gov. Palin, other opinion leaders, including Dick Morris, will be featured.

The registration page for the webcast is here:

When someone QUITS their job or QUITS their team do they still get to call themselves a NY Yankee or a COP? NO, they do not. Do we still refer to Allen Iverson as Starting Point Guard for Memphis or Detroit Pistons? No, we don't...because he QUIT those teams....so why in the world do the press still refer to someone who served less than HALF of their term in office - and during the HALF term they were there numerous ETHICS VIOLATIONS & ABUSE of POWER investigations were brought. So let's PLEASE STOP calling palin "governor" she IS NOT ONE....SHE QUIT....and SHE FAILED TO ADEQUATELY do the job when she had it. She does not deserve the respect that comes from holding office or having the title to one. She is simply a QUITTER. So stop with the "governor" C. R. A. P. please.

The fact is, I would vote for her in a heart beat over Obama. Look at what is happening to this country! I am not saying all her views are in line with mine, but lets face it, we need someone else! Sarah is at least the type of candidate we need! Please Run!

Please tell me this is a joke. "Look at what is happening to this country"? You realize all politicians are the same, right, and that the country was destined to have a downturn? It is just history, we ebb and flow. We "flew" and Clinton became President (not only because of things he did, but because of what he was set up for), and now we are "ebbing" as Obama became and is President because of what he was set up for years ago, not just under Bush. The butterfly effect of history is much longer than just a few years.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't vote for Palin because she isn't Obama. Vote for an Independent or at least really think about what you are doing.

What are the "time tested truths" she speaks of? Trickle down economics? We've seen that doesn't work. A $700 billion annual defense budget while schools crumble? A fossil fuel based energy policy? Returning to a healthcare policy that has us ranked 38th in the world while spending the most consuming 17% of GDP? No other nation spends more than 10% and that includes the 37 countries ahead of us. Or perhaps she would like to end Alaska's federal subsidies that make up 30% of the state's revenue?

All she has are these tired hyper-patriotic bromides and and absolutely no credible ideas concerning real problems. Add I'm so heartened to hear that she would give it "s shot." She'll give a try if she can fit it in. Of course if she didn't like the job she could always quit.

I hope the is the Republican Presidential Nominee. It would be a laugh riot. Her shoe size and IQ are exactly the same!
04:09 PM on 09/20/2010
Whatever...
Why would she bother to run for President when she already has shown the public that she cannot govern the state of Alaska effectively? She can wait in the wings for the rest of her life. Just ask Rush Limbaugh about that. She has a career opportunity as a "see, I told you so" commentator.
05:30 PM on 11/16/2010
She is going to bother because people are going to vote for her. We live in really frightening times where the uneducated get to vote too.

I live in Wisconsin and thought "no way" would 2 extremists take office, and they did. Scary stuff.

I hope she runs, but I think her popularity will wane with the new sheriff in town. Christine is going to end up taking some of Sarah's audience. The tea partiers have a new shiny toy out there now and they want to show it off to everyone.

Sarah Palin to South Florida in October?
*
The Liberty and Freedom Foundation, the organization which brought Sarah Palin to West Texas in March, will bring her to Florida for a Miami fundraiser, according a St Petersburg Times report.

An announcement by Sfla Conservative, a local Tea Party group which is partnering with the foundation, is the source of the story:
"Governor Palin is in Miami to raise funds to help elect principled grassroots conservatives," the announcement reads. "You are invited to get involved in this, the most critical midterm election in our Republic's history."
If the report is accurate, Gov. Palin will speak in American Airlines Arena Oct. 6, just five days before President Obama is scheduled to appear in South Florida comes to raise money for area congressional Democrats who are worried about holding on to their seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Not a question mark - you can buy tickets at ticketmaster.

That's week from today, and near as I can tell, word only started percolating about this maybe a week ago. I really don't know what kind of audience they expect, or how it will raise any money after expenses (if not lose money).
