WASHINGTON — A straw vote suggests that social conservatives favor Indiana Rep. Mike Pence to head a Republican presidential ticket with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in 2012.

About 723 out of more than 2,000 registered attendees cast ballots Saturday at the annual Values Voter Summit. Pence was the top choice for president with 24 percent of the vote.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, received 22 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Palin.

Palin was given the honors for vice president. She came in second behind Pence, who also topped that category.

Those casting ballots also listed their top issues: abortion, government spending, repeal of Obama's health overhaul, protection of religious liberty and national security.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Update by Doug: (h/t RefudiateObama2012) Scott Rasmussen and Doug Schoen, co-authors of the recently released Mad as Hell, sat down for an interview with Jamie Weinstein of the The Daily Caller. One of the questions asked was who they thought would be the most formidable Republican candidate to challenge Obama in 2012:

6. Who do you think would be the best Republican candidate to challenge Obama in 2012?

I do not know now who the best candidate to challenge President Obama is. I can tell you that just based on this year’s primary season, the strongest candidate in the Republican primaries will almost certainly be Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin to South Florida in October?
*
The Liberty and Freedom Foundation, the organization which brought Sarah Palin to West Texas in March, will bring her to Florida for a Miami fundraiser, according a St Petersburg Times report.

An announcement by Sfla Conservative, a local Tea Party group which is partnering with the foundation, is the source of the story:
"Governor Palin is in Miami to raise funds to help elect principled grassroots conservatives," the announcement reads. "You are invited to get involved in this, the most critical midterm election in our Republic's history."
If the report is accurate, Gov. Palin will speak in American Airlines Arena Oct. 6, just five days before President Obama is scheduled to appear in South Florida comes to raise money for area congressional Democrats who are worried about holding on to their seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Correction: Sarah Palin is going to Miami to collect a fat speaker's fee. While she is there, she will promote local republican candidates....

Obviously, "Right Nation" and "Values Voters" have different criteria and probably different "values".

52% of Voters Say Their Views Are More Like Palin’s Than Obama’s

Monday, September 20, 2010 Email to a Friend ShareThis

Fifty-two percent (52%) of Likely U.S. Voters say their own views are closer to Sarah Palin’s than they are to President Obama’s, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.
Just 40% say their views are closer to the president’s than to those of the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate.
Among the Political Class, however, 68% say their views are more like Obama’s, while 63% of Mainstream voters describe their views as more like Palin’s.
Eighty-four percent (84%) of Republicans and 59% of voters not affiliated with either major party say their views are more like Palin’s. Eighty-one percent (81%) of Democrats say they think more like the president.
White House Press secretary Robert Gibbs last week said Palin is perhaps “the most formidable force in the Republican Party right now,” but just 22% of all voters agree. Fifty-two percent (52%) do not believe Palin is the party’s most formidable force. Twenty-six percent (26%) aren’t sure.
The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on September 18-19, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Can you define the "political class"? Does that mean people who are elected to office? Does it mean people who pay attn to politics? Is it a term that Rasmussen made up in their eternal quest to make leftists look bad and Nazis look good?

"About 723 out of more than 2,000 registered attendees cast ballots Saturday at the annual Values Voter Summit"

They couldn't even get 50 percent of their electorate to vote at an event they attended where voting was a principal purpose for being there?!?! And they plan to take over Congress in 2010!?!?

Yeppers, and they proudly proclaim they are doing well at throwing out the GOP moderate incumbents. Replacements are decidedly low brow-but that is the right wing leaders way to maintain their own power.

How come for 8 years of despair, economic loss, minimal job creation if any,two wars (one of his own making..make no mistake),no improvement to the middle class, wall street, big banks, mortgage companies, credit card companies, enjoying deregulation and engaging in schemes and fraud,a broken and vile health insurance system,we had not one tea party lynch mob, convention or demonstration..not one.The former president sponsored and supported torture and said he would do it again,he engaged in reckless behavior by spying illegally on Americans and made up his own laws through executive order.

Former President Bush indeed was a prime candidate for impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors, yet no call from the racist right for his impeachment.I cite the following:He knowingly sent US troops into harms way causing over 5,000 dead for an unjust war based on lies,he also caused the deaths of 650,000 innocent Iraqi civilians and should be tried for war crimes...these are impeachable offenses

These evil, viscous racists have repeatedly called for the impeachment and violent overthrow of President Obama and have vowed to tie congress up with hearings and inquisitions for the next two years if they regain majorities.I ask on what grounds? They believe that the president's supporters like myself have suddenly died. These racists under the guise of this tea party crap have never accepted the election of Obama so they decided to make the 50 million "white" folks that voted for him hate him by using unfounded fear.
