HuffPost Art's Ten Highlights For Guggenheim Museum's Youtube Play Biennial (VIDEOS)

First Posted: 09/20/10 11:28 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:45 PM ET

New York's Guggenheim Museum has a new partner in what could be considered contemporary art A&R: YouTube. They're currently hosting the YouTube Play Biennial - a juried contest that asked YouTube users to submit videos of digital art, stop-motion-animation, music videos, short films, and the like to be whittled down to the top 20. With over 100 "finalists" being viewed now by jurors including indie rock group Animal Collective and filmmaker Darren Aronofsky AND on view at kiosks in the museum itself, the official 20 will be announced later this month. In the meantime, we've chosen our top ten in the slideshow below. We'll be checking in with the official announcement to see how close we came. Keep in mind, these are in no particular order...

Call for Video Art Entries
Submissions end October 20th, 2010 EST
To submit your work, please go to www.sanctionedarray.specifyothers.com

SanctionedArray is an online database of video art conceived in response to the restrictions of artists' submissions to The Guggenheim Museum's and YouTube's video biennial, Play (www.youtube.com/play). Artists' submissions to Play are limited by OFAC sanctions (www.ustreas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/) - where citizens or residents of Belarus , Cote d'Ivoire , Congo , Cuba , Iran , Iraq , Lebanon , North Korea , Somalia , Sudan , Syria , Myanmar/Burma, and Zimbabwe are not eligible to submit their work. We maintain that the application of these OFAC sanctions to virtual transmissions of video art perpetuates the causes that led to the imposition of them; and we invite those who wish to protest the continuity of such restrictions - artists of any origin, including those from the sanctioned countries - to submit their work to SanctionedArray.

We hope to showcase the most notable and varied video works from creators anywhere. Submission of virtual entries to SanctionedArray, follow online video formats proposed by YouTube and The Guggenheim, except forEligibility 1.d. (www.sites.google.com/site/ytplayterms/all). One hundred videos will be selected from the online entries to be showcased online.

SanctionedArray's selected video entries shall also be launched at the screening event on October 25th and 26th, 2010 at WHITE BOX in New York City .
