New York Fashion Week's Ten Surprising Trends (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 09/20/10 04:44 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:45 PM ET

Many a trend was born at New York Fashion Week, some a welcome surprise (tea-length skirts!) and some just a plain shock (midriffs? really?). We've mined the shows for the most important new trends and compiled a list here. Take a look and tell us which ones you're thrilled about and which ones you'll be ignoring come springtime.

The Midriff
1 of 11
If you thought you'd waved goodbye to the midriff for good back in 2000 or so, you're in for a surprise; it's back and popping up all over the place, both as a sly sliver of skin and full on as in the days of yore. As seen at Rachel Comey, Vena Cava and Michael Kors.

HELLOOOO! If it is COLD enough for a 3/4 length Trench Coat, then it is TOO COLD for a completely bare middrift!!!

Most of these are styles I would never wear, but I can't spend $3,000 per ensemble.

Sigh. Can't I just enjoy updating my fall wardrobe right now? Of course, being so far behind the fashion trends, I have the advantage of buying things on sale once I decide what I need . . . !

Photo#10: I'm pretty sure folds around the waist are only flattering if you weigh 95lbs and your "curves" are the bones jutting out of your skin... and even then, it still doesn't look that great.

Photo #5: the color is fine, but both of those dresses are ugly. I really suspect some designers just put hideous stuff out there thinking that the fashion world will take anything they do seriously. I can just picture them snickering behind their hands as fashion writers rave over those two baggy, unflattering dresses.

Photo #4: why is that woman wearing a pair of yarmulkes on her chest?

Ugly, ugly, ugly. I think the recession is causing designer depression and it's showing in their work.

I have no problems with showing the midriff if it is presentable. But not in the workplace, please. And in the Northeast U.S., it's not exactly a fall-winter look unless you want to freeze your butt off.
