New Yorker:

Washington's contemporaries saw in him what they wanted to see. There have always been Washington killjoys.

I've never read a biography of George Washington. One of the best biographies I've ever read was The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris. Very entertaining as well as informative. I came away with a greater understanding of politics in NY and Washington in the late 19th c, and a very strong appreciation for Roosevelt.
