Eddie Long, Atlanta Bishop, Denies Accusations Of Sexual Abuse By Male Parishioners

Eddie Long

ATLANTA — The prominent pastor of a 25,000-member megachurch near Atlanta denies allegations in a lawsuit that he coerced two young men from the congregation into a sexual relationship, his attorney said.

Lawyers for the men, now 20 and 21, say they filed the lawsuit Tuesday in DeKalb County Court against Bishop Eddie Long. The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they were victims of sexual impropriety.

President George W. Bush and three former presidents visited the sprawling New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the Atlanta suburb of Lithonia for the 2006 funeral of Coretta Scott King, the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Long introduced the speakers and the Rev. Bernice King, the Kings' younger daughter, delivered the eulogy. She is also a pastor there.

WATCH:

The men who filed the suit were 17- and 18-year-old members of the church when they say Long abused his spiritual authority to seduce them with cars, money, clothes, jewelry, international trips and access to celebrities.

Craig Gillen, Long's attorney, says the pastor "categorically denies the allegations."

"We find it unfortunate that these two young men would take this course of action," Gillen said late Tuesday after news of the lawsuit broke. He said Long had not yet been served with copies of the lawsuits.

Long has called for a national ban on same-sex marriage and his church counsels gay members to become straight. In 2004, he led a march with Bernice King to her father's Atlanta grave to support a national constitutional amendment to protect marriage "between one man and one woman."

He also has released several gospel albums, authored books on relationships and spirituality, and hosts a weekly television program.

B.J. Bernstein, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, said she opened her investigation after getting a call from one of the boys. She said her law office is now broadening the investigation.

"We are taking calls and we do believe, based on what the boys' statements are, that there are other victims," she said.

Although the relationships started when the plaintiffs were past the legal age of consent in Georgia – which is 16 – she said Long abused his "spiritual authority" to coerce her clients into engaging in sexual acts.

Bernstein also said that Bishop made an excessive number of phone calls and e-mails to her clients. She said most of the notes were not crude, but several of them asked the clients to send him pictures. She said she will subpoena Long for his records.

"It's an irrational number of contacts," she said.

When asked about a possible motive for the accusations, Gillen referred to a break-in at Long's office in June. Bernstein said one of the plaintiffs is facing a criminal burglary charge in the incident, but she said the break-in was a way of lashing out at Long.

Bernstein said she contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office earlier this month when she became aware of the young men's allegations. She did not know what action, if any, the agency planned to take. She said she did not contact DeKalb County authorities because Long and his church have strong ties to county officials.

Patrick Crosby, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta, would not comment on whether federal prosecutors are investigating Long.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Wednesday his office wasn't investigating. And Orzy Theus of the DeKalb County District Attorney's office said Wednesday that county prosecutors do not plan to be involved.

"That's a civil matter. They were over the age of consent, that's not a criminal matter," said Theus.

Long was appointed pastor of New Birth in 1987. Then, the church had about 150 members. Less than four years later, the church had grown to more than 8,000 members. Athletes and entertainers claim membership at the church.

Long's church was among those named in 2007 in a Senate committee's investigation into a half-dozen Christian ministries over their financing.

Today, New Birth sits on 250 acres and has more than 25,000 members, a $50 million, 10,000-seat cathedral and more than 40 ministries – including the Longfellows Youth Academy, a tuition-based program for young men 13 to 18.

The New Birth campus was quiet Wednesday morning, with no unusual activity. Administrative staff referred media inquiries to Long's spokesman and people at the church declined to comment on the situation.

There are no ATM's in the lobby of the church...see how people lie and misconstrue things. The evidence is weak..Keep in mind that his office was broken into and one of the known items stolen was his IPAD...could it be that these pictures were sent to themselves by the accusers? What if the photos are altered in some way?......and if this happened 2-3 yrs ago....and they are so distraught over it, why keep the pictures..most people I know don't even still have the same cell phone from 2 yrs ago....all these men kept photos and text messages from 2 -3 yrs ago?......Come on! And lastly in my opinion, if indeed it is true they were not coerced, they were gay already and consented because my sons would not have let any man touch, kiss or sex them up regardless of who the person was or what was being offered.......and one reason they didn't say it happened below the age of 16 is because if he were found guilty he goes to jail if he in jail you are not getting any money. A settlement is possible.

Also the attorney didn't necessarily take the case based on the fact that she thought she could win, but because of the fame and noteriety from it....this is a high profile case, if it were some unknown person that might be true, but this case gets her name out there.

No ATM at the church? No sign saying that this is a 100% "tithing church? No one throwing money on the stage, as if a strip club?? One guy outing him may be a conspiracy, 4 guys, perhaps some truth to the story

Fourth lawsuit ...

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/09/24/georgia.pastor.lawsuit/?hpt=T1

OK, regardless if you love him, hate him or not, just think about this. The lawyer representing the men, attorney B.J. Bernstein, is the SAME lawyer whÎż successfully represented Genarlow Wilson Ń–n his controversial underage sex case and get him off those charges. Remember that case?

She isn't going to take a case she doesn't think she could win, nor would she take it if she didn't think it had merit.

And lastly - as a vet journalist, the media is bombarded 24/7 with sex scandals and controversies. Barely .5 percent of *scandals* ever get in print or even mentioned on a broadcast. That said, for any media to cover this, there has to be an inkling of truth to it. And tell me - how many of these scandals have ended with the accusers saying 'We were wrong. We're sorry' or even thrown out of court?

Long needs prayers, as well as the accusers.

The truth is coming soon. If it were me, I'd demand a trial right now without delay, especially when I know I'm innocent.

Stay tuned, folks ...

Speaking of Ms. Bernstein

First she is the prime person who sturred up the media. Her purpose, she would like to move this case out of Georgia where the sextual consentural age is over 16 years old. Second, she has a law suit against the church, who knew nothing about Mr. Long's actions. (What adult in their right mind would know that a grown man is sexually abusing a young man and not say anything)

Thirdly, if she believes Mr. Long is guilty she should go after him not innocent church people. But since this case is about money her actions follows. Go after the deep pockets.

OK, so these young MEN, not children 17 & 18 yrs. old are now coming forward at 20 & 21 yrs. old, about being sexually abused by this pastor. They stated that they received cars, jewelry, money, trips and access to celebrities.

The 17 yr. old is the only one that could be considered a minor, where was his parents, more than likely the 18 yr. old was still living with his parents, where were they? I know my parents would definitely question why the pastor of our church paying that type of intimate attention to me. Cars, Money, Trips etc.... How was this kept secret? It just seems fishy!!!

So is he being accused of sexual abuse or is he being accused of being a homosexual? These were not children as is the case with all of the Catholic Priests, it just seems as though they are out for $$.

If they came out and stated that it had started when they were young boys, they I would be the first to scream FRY HIS AZZ, something just seems off. I have not heard anything about them attempting to file criminal charges just a civil suit. $$$$$$$$

"Although the relationships started when the plaintiffs were past the legal age of consent in Georgia – which is 16 – she said Long abused his "spiritual authority" to coerce her clients into engaging in sexual acts."

Something does not smell right!

The prosperity Gospel teaches that the "bestowed" are truly blessed by God. The parents thought that since the "anointed" one, who was showering their child with gifts, was a blessing from God.

Ole Rev has one problem. If he took a 16 year old across state lines, to a jurisdiction to were the age 16 is not the age of consent, that state could prosecute.

Simply a gold digging bonanza perpertrated by juvenile delinquents with a personal vendetta against this wonderful oracle of light. Their allegations are impotent at best and undeserving of any attention whatsoever. Of course ,I stand to be corrected should I see REAL EVIDENCE which so far neither they nor their counsel can produce, ONLY VERBAL FABRICATIONS! But until then, I would like to visit one of bishop Long's upcoming seminars and extend a warm welcome to everyone including these pseudo victims. If I had to represent Bishop Long in this case as his legal counsel, I would do so FOR FREE!
12:09 PM on 09/23/2010
"Impotent at best"? HA HA HA!!! Do you really think impotence is at the heart of this scandal?
I think you should sell your house, your car, and your three-piece suits and your should send your children and wife out to work so you can pay for the lawyers. Oh wait, as a member of that church you ARE going to be paying the lawyers.
12:15 PM on 09/23/2010
Makes me wonder if the mothers and fathers of his alledged victims took these poor boys to "seminars" and unknowingly set them up for abuse. Sounds like being one of Long's favorites was the kiss of death.
09:31 PM on 09/23/2010
There's no evidence of abuse, inappropriate behaviour, disorderly conduct, corruption of a minor and certainly coercion to sex! There's NADA! We are not to confuse the teaching and preaching of righteousness for homophobia! The only evidence so far are innocent photos of bishop Long in sports wear at a hotel room. No my friend its not the kiss of death but a kiss of betrayal and extortion by these judas like characters. Bishop Eddie Long is a wonderful mentor to the youth, community and his followers worldwide. Until the alleged victims can clearly support their allegations, the ONLY victim I see here is Bishop Eddie Long! Sorry I almost forgot, there's a second victim, Bishop Eddie Long's MONEY!

Your link bashes President Obama and does not believe he is a Christian because he supports and respects gay, lesbian and transgendered persons and their capacity to manage meaningful relationships. It denies his Christianity. The link does not have credibility. It bashes Black churches and the way Black people worship. The link is trash of a most vile nature, unless, of course, your thing is tearing down.

Wow! ABC News just showed pictures he supposedly sent to these guys posing in the bathroom in a muscle shirt - your basic cell phone pictures. Not cute, although...it still does not prove anything.

Truth is truth.

I want the ministry and that church to survive and continue to thrive.

I do not want the anti-religious and God haters to profit from this scandal.

I want to honor the great work that congregation and pastor have done.

I hate to see people who have accomplished big wonderful things taken down by crapola.

I agonize over the number of people posting with open woundedness from unresolved church hurts and pains.

The Philosopher messaged me to "stop yapping".Of course I won't. These issues hold a lot of meaning for me and to me, and this will be my therapy today. Those for whom I am too much can skip over the name and comment.

I am quite saddened by all of this. I cannot make any of it right. I can try to prevent someone from falling by the wayside because of it.

I wish all of this attention was going to something positive and uplifting. The result can still be positive and uplifting. Any pain I feel now will just have to be part of the process. And there is a good chance that I will blather on.

My brother, I ask you this with love: How many pictures of you did you send to 20 year old guys in a muscle shirt? If my heterosexual husband would have done that, even to women, I would throw him out of the house.

This ministry has problems, mainly, ATM machines in the lobby. Forget about the wealth of the minister, or the good deeds done by the church, are the poor, who desperately need the 10% of their income to pay rent, treated the same as the wealthy member who gives thousands?

Was Jesus rewarded by how much gold he bought into the temple, or did he destroy the temple, ashamed of the money handlers who invaded it? Martin Luther broke from the Catholic church, which sold "restitution" to the poor to buy their way into heaven, and started the protestant faith, but some of these preachers are now telling their flock that Jesus was really a wall street banker.

I have no sympathy for this guy. Mainly, telling his flock that if you are prosperous, you are in Gods favor, in order to excuse his gross misappropriation of wealth. Shame on him, and shame on anyone who thinks that if they give lip service to the down trotten, yet money to the church, is Gods chosen people.

I seem to be the chief apologisst for Long across two threads, which is funny, as I am not a fan of his, but I do respect his ministry and its accomplishments. In that vein, I must acknowledge the muscle shirt photos I saw on the news made me drop my jaw. My standard for throwing in the towel will be photos of actual body parts - ahem. That is because many people send them now as part of flirtations or as documentation of recent fun. (PLEASE do not check your hubbies images, LOL).

Sounds like you are uncomfortable with the prosperity ministry philosophy. I share those reservations. Some things, like the ATMs in the lobby, are just crass and tasteless to me.
I do not find their way right for me, but I affirm their right to worship in the way they see fit.

I also am aware of the good they do and the lives that have been changed and the many who garner meaningful experiences from this ministry.

Talking putting things in context, this was your original comment:

"You are very quick to accept this as truth. Have you ever heard a rumor or lie about you that was going around? How well you appreciated people not even asking you or checking out the facts before telling all who can hear. I am an African-American who has been "buked and scorned, talked about sho'se you born". If the shoe has ever been on your foot, what makes you so eager to yap is beyond me. But then, bro, it might be that crabs in the barrel thing... "

It was your arrogance towards my comment and other comments that made me answer you that way, so context matters. Look I'm a religious person too, heterosexual, and I happen to be liberal in my religious views. There is just a lot of HYPOCRISY concerning homosexuality with any religion, in the black community, and the republican party, I don't have no pity for hypocrites. This bishop like Ted Haggard and lot of other priests, imams preached against homosexuality NOW THIS! I say get him!

I do not think we disagree substantivel. My manner and alleged arrogance rubbed you the wrong way (?).

Help me understand the arrogant part. Indeed, I am confident. I can somewhat express my opinions and feelings in a definitive fashion.

I acknowledge and honor the gesture you are making. I think I have offended or aggrieved you somehow but I am unclear on that.

Today I have been expressing how I think and feel about things that matter to me. I have something to say. I have confidence. I am forthright. I saw and heard things that disturbed me, saw some stuff that seemed less than respectful, saw untruths, and responded.

Your main beef seems to be with hypocrisy. I do not feel I have been hypocritical, so am not sure if that was part of your annoyance with me.

Anyhow, I wonder if we really have substantive issues and differences. This is pretty much my personality and how I am. It is not for everyone.

I hope that we can interact civilly. I look forward to seeing your comments, contrarian though you may be (not trying to get in a parting shot). If we are not cool now, we will be, because we each have that kind of character. It will work out. We have reached the destroyed brother limit for the month. Peace.

Always interesting to read the numerous opinions on what Christian religion is about. Truth is, Scriptures make quite clear that people struggling for relationship with their Creator and Savior commit sinful acts. One of the most beloved being David participating in a heterosexual act on the one hand, and writing "the Lord is my Shepherd with the other."
Faithful people understand that human nature wrestles with sin, but does not excuse sin. One is more confused than he knows who believes that once you do wrong, that is who you are--one of the most common mistakes made in the minds of the homosexual community, quick to label persons homophobes because their lifestyle cannot be commended by God any more than an heterosexual adulterous lifestyle.

The moderat0r sympathizes with you, for they scrubbed my earlier response to your comment.

You are as wrong as Eddie Long in bashing gay people. Fortunately, we all are subject to God's judgments, not yours.

Please do not be deceived. Your gay bashing is not Godly; nor can you deny gays God's power. Gays have the same personal relationship with God as you profess to have, and do not have to go through you to experience it. God speaks to individual hearts and will let each person know what God commends.

You are no spokesperson for the true and living God.
04:27 AM on 09/23/2010
I do have to agree with you on this. what a lot of people fail to realize that God Created us all the good and bad. we all are His people what He dislike is our sinful ways, the writen word of God tell us Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and wit what measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you do you look at the speck in youe brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother let me remove the speck from your eye; and look a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and them you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. (MATTHEW 7: 1-5) who is with out sin cast the frist stone.
11:43 AM on 09/27/2010
Stephen, God accepts all "people", however, he does not condone un-scriptural behavior. For example. He destroyed a city that was known for homosexuality, bestiality and rampant fornication- Sodom.

Secondly, God had it written at 1 Cor 6:9-11 all the behaviors that would disqualify a person from receiving the Kingdom of God.

This is also highlighted at Romans 1: 26, 27 "That is why God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full recompense, which was due for their error."

God loves his creation and he does not wish anyone destroyed, but to obtain everlasting life. However, all those not living in accord with his commands will not gain life. So it is clear "from the scriptures" that God DOES NOT support homosexuality. He understands it is a weakness, like fornication, but he expects the person to stop all perverted practices.
