Stewart: 'We Have Found Obama's Kryptonite' (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post

Last night on "The Daily Show" Jon Stewart focused on President Obama's town hall meeting on CNBC, where questions centered around Wall St. and the economy. Among those asking the questions was a woman who Stewart identified as "Obama's Kryptonite."

After fielding questions from a jilted Wall St. executive and a young lawyer who can't afford to pay his student loans, Obama was hit hardest by a middle-class, African-American woman who frankly said, "I'm exhausted of defending you."

It turns out, the woman behind this reasonable critique is not just a middle-class wife and mother, but also a chief financial officer of a veteran's organization, a powerful combination that Stewart considers an "Obama zapping machine."

"A black, lady, financial analyst veteran?" Stewart said in disbelief. "We have found Obama's Kryptonite."

Then, in true 'Daily Show' fashion, Stewart used footage of Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign to show what Americans such as the fed-up woman at the rally were promised, and followed up with clips from the last two years where he defers or denies the ability to follow through with those same promises.

Too bad you used the same tricks you accuse Glenn Beck et al of doing. With alot of editing you managed to make it look as if this woman dissed the prez, and he had no comeback. She was actually quite respectful, even if she was pointed, and he actually handled it well, and had a great rapport with her and the rest of the audience. So disappointing you resorted to this Jon Stewart! You're better than that!

The problem is, a candidate can make sincere, strongly felt promises on the outside, but he doesn't get to see the full measure of the crap our government hides from us until he's on the inside. Nor can he exactly talk about all the stuff he has to deal with on a daily basis, particularly the huge mess of national security issues.

So in a very real sense, the President is muzzled from truly expressing his outrage, disbelief, and horror at the REAL mess he has to deal with. We'll never know; I'm just glad we have one helluva smart and committed guy trying to grapple with it all.

The last thing we need is another mental check-out like Bush did for the last half year of his presidency.
07:57 PM on 09/23/2010
So he walked off the street to become president not knowing anything about politics? He was a politician before he was president...in order to become a senator you damn well have to know the full level of crap government involves in order to work your way around it to become senator. Stop making stupid excuses.

Every politician is out for their personal career first and maybe the will of the people second. That is why we need less of them. The sooner you wake up and realize that the better off you will be. It doesn't matter if they have an R or D behind their name. They are one in the same.

I agree with you that a politician's main job is to get elected and stay elected, and they will say whatever they need to, to make that happen.

but to all the people on Obama's case about broken promises, he is only one man, with a weak Congress, that seems to be afraid of losing "their" seats so they havent allowed Obama to use the majority he had, whereas, Bush for his first few years had a majority that was willing to do what he needed, and even though many paid for it in '06,when the tide started turning the other way, they allowed their party leader to do some of the things he said he would do.

Very well said. I don't doubt for a minute that the president is putting in the work to help solve this mess, but I think what prevents some folks from buying it is that - as shallow as it sounds - he's missing a little bit of the ol' Reagan "I feel your pain" demeanor.

Wow, this video scares me. It really shows how incompetent Obama and this administration has become. How can we turn this around? There has to be some way to blame bush for this? This is not good with elections around the corner. They should have screened these questions like a previous poster mentioned. The public shouldn't be able to ask questions like this.

They should have screened questions? Bushlike, you mean, to take out the hard ones?

The public shouldn't be able to ask questions like this? You mean like Sarah Palin refusing to answer questions that are too hard?

Sorry, folks, our hero President Obama has to face the music just like everybody else. If he wants to avoid the hard questions, then do a Bush and just don't give live interviews.

SHOULD have screened questions? Are you kidding? Every member of that audience was vetted and screened by both the administration and it's lapdog NBC.

Obama has NEVER appeared at a town hall that wasn't exclusively his "base" and screened to provide only softballs.

Jeez, a a classmate and the definition of his base and you don't think they were there as "fluffers" for him?

Wake up.

A lot of people taking up for the president here, and that's fine, that's all well and good.

The thing is though, she did have a point.... That's why it struck such a nerve.

We all know he's been too condescending to republicans, he's been too "nice" to the other side, appeasing to them when all they want's tosee him fail, and laugh, looking the other way when their ignorant cousins scream he's from Kenya....

And we know he didn't fight for single payer or even the public option when the crunch really came down, showed no dissapointment or anger from being run over by millions the private health industry spent trying to kill it, essentially reclaiming their position at the cost of the public's, because otherwise it would be a "Governmenttakeover!!!"

Even worse, we've seen his advisers who were actually a part of the economic destruction, without any explaining WHY he's really working with these clowns, while he delivers a watered-down version that actually caters to banks, leaving them powerful WHILE WE STARVE!!!

Hey guys, I'm like you... I love the guy... I know he's true. But the plain fact is, until he stops being so darn nice, until he really shows FAITH that no matter how he fights for us we'll have his back, then when some lady like her comes along and nails him like this....
THAT'S WHAT HE GETS !

" We all know he's been too condescending to republicans.."

I think you meant 'deferential', not 'condescending'...but I get your point. :0) BTW, I don't think her intent was to "nail" him because she said on Chris Matthews that she still has faith in him. She and many other supporters in this country are just hurting SO much right now. It is not CLOSE to being fair to blame him for the biggest issues--there were too many other forces in play BEFORE he took office. However, he just needs to reset his priorities (after accomplishing a HELL of a lot for the country in the first 18 months) and make JOBS and the ECONOMY his main focus. A close second would be to end that Afghan conflict ASAP and bring our brave men and women back home.
08:37 PM on 09/23/2010
That is a proper use of the word condescension. I'm not sure if it is purely coincidental, but condescension didn't originally have negative connotations.

If ANY of you Obama-haters actually believe in your hearts that there is ONE, single, solitary republican currently residing in this country that is a BETTER candidate for POTUS and who could have done a BETTER job for the middle class and poor than our current Chief Executive, I would like to know who that person is. Seriously. Also, if those of you that TRULY fall into the "middle class" category (annual incomes between $50k and $100k) are maniacally angry, but HONESTLY think that turning control of congress over to the REPUBLICANS in hopes that the DEMOCRAT POTUS can and will do MORE on YOUR behalf, I want to know how long you've been smokin' that hemp?
09:03 PM on 09/23/2010
You miss the point. When you telegraph to the Democratic politicians, "Do whatever you want, because I will vote for you no matter what," then they will do what Republicans want.

There has been no concrete evidence that the democratic electorate, collectively speaking, has "telegraphed" any such thing to the Democratic leadership in Congress OR the WH. The Republican Party, as currently constituted, is ill-prepared to take over the reins of government at this time and likewise for the estimable future. Unfortunately, this truism is only obvious to those that step out of their myopic comfort zones and dissect the issues from both the blue and red perspectives. Conservatives, being painfully deficient in ideas, noticeably self-serving in manner and disdainful in moral tone, there should not even be a QUESTION about giving the Democrats control of both houses until 2012.

In the words of my 12 year old "Are people mad because the President doesn't have magical powers?" What is she exactly exhausted of - a Senate that wants to fillibuster everything. Lady give me a break do you honestly believe "anyone" can turn around the economy in 20 months. I always go back to this when the USA invaded a sovereign nation- people cheered; when the American jobs were outsourced we aplauded free market and capitalism at it's best, but now your exhausted at defending the administration. What world does she live in because I see the administration trying to work for the people; its Congress trying to impede everything from healthcare to the jobs bill. In case the middle class hasn't gotten it yet, it's the Republicans that want to destroy you.

THIS LADY IS THE ONE OUT OF TOUCH IF U ASK ME, I HAVE TO 2 BOYS I SEND THEM TO PRIVTE SCHOOL AND WE MAKE $200K+ AND TO SAY THAT I AM ON MY WAY TO HOT DOG AND BEANS IS JOKE,YES WE ARE NOT SPENDING AS MUCH BUT WE ARE FAR AWAY FROM DIEING OF HUNGER, IF U CAN SEND U KIDS TO PRIVTE SCHOOL U ARE DOING JUST FINE NO U ARE MORE THEN FINE, SO I FOR ONE DO NOT BUY HER CRAP AND JUST BEC SHE IS BLACK WOMEN OR SAY THAT SHE VOTED FOR HIM DOES NOT MEAN SHE IS PART OF THE BASE, MICHEL STEEL IS BLACK TOO AND HE DID NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA OR SUPPORT HIM AND THE WAY SHE WAS RUNNING ON ALL THE TV SHOWS AND ALL CRAP THAT "I'm exhausted of defending you.'' WELL IF U BELIVE IN WHAT HE IS DOING U STAND FOR IT AND IF U DO NOT BELIVE IN WHAT HE IS DOING THEN LADY NO NEED TO DEFENDING HIM, PLUS NOW THAT HER KIDS ARE GOING AWAY TO SCHOOL THEY WILL HAVE HEALTH CARE AND SHE WILL SAVE MONEY ON THAT , BUT IF SHE THINKS THAT HE CAN JUST FIX IN SHORT TIME THEN I DO NOT KNOW HOW THE HELL SHE HAS THE JOB SHE HAS U WOULD THINK THE HAVE MORE BRIANS AND SMARTER I WOULD NEVER HIRE HER THAT IS FOR SURE.
07:25 AM on 09/23/2010
She was tired of defending Obama. I like how she was a big shot in the finance with a Gov agency & she was a veteran. As a back woman, conservatives never would have allowed her being near these two titles. Between her, the Wall Street aggrieved guy, and the lawyer worried about his American dream these words come to mind: spoiled, gaul, lawyer.

That Lawyer guy, pissed at Obama that his college costed too much. But does not like Obama to do any Government program to do anything about it. Leave it free market AND I hold you responsible.

Were Americans ever logical?
09:27 AM on 09/23/2010
AMVET is not a government agency.
It is a charity organization, which does NOT get very good ratings by the charity rating organizations.

It amazes me how gullible people are. First, to think that all of the problems created over the past many years should have been fixed by now, especially with the party of NO blocking things every step of the way. And then when that same party of NO says something rediculously false or misleading, so many jump on the bandwagon to believe it. Yes, there were tax cuts, I saw them when I did my taxes. No, they weren't dollar bills flying around my head like little angels, but they were there if you bothered to see them. But too many people would rather believe the garbage thrown about by the people who only want to bow down to big business than to open their eyes and their mind and see a little bit of the real world.
Can anyone imagine what kind of mess we would be in if Obama had lost the election. Where would we be with Mr. Stay off my lawn and Mrs. Look at me, look at me? And if these baggers win in November, we will have to wait another two years for any kind of progress.

Loved the Wall Street guy. What in the world is WS mad about? I gave them all of my 401 K and income taxes to come. And the middle aged lawyer guy who's American Dream is denied! Is this a bad sitcome?

Remember when that woman said to W "I have three jobs." and W said "that is a great American story"?

This isn't science, it's just an opinion of 300 economists that letting the cuts expire for the wealthy would have detrimental effects.

Apparently, these 300 economists didn't bother checking out the data that shows that the economy grew when Clinton increased taxes and was essentially stagnant after Bush cut taxes. I'm not saying the tax changes were solely responsible for the economy, but it does show that increased taxes aren't going to kill the economy.

maybe I am less dissapointed than some progressives because I knew it was only what he wanted to do...I never thought he neccessarily could do it. I heard him as painting a picture of our country and it was like how I wanted it.
now he did say he'd do it, not "I'll try". maybe he didn't know how hard it would be...I am pretty sure he didn't know how bad the economy would be nor how the Repubs in congress especially the Senate would behave differently than they ever had before..the Wall of No. I guess I never believe a politician WILL do something...I translate it into..if I can I'll do it, and I want xxxx.

I believe him that he wanted those things to a high degree. I think he underestimated how hard it was a little ...but it is not that he hasnt taken action either.
a come back also to the choice....he was the best choice so i get behind the decision instead of rail against it..like we do with all things in life (ie I chose this job but its not perfect, was best choice but to rail against choce does nothing as it continues to be best choice)
