Testing for pharmaceuticals in city waters in the U.S. should be mandatory.

And still there are people who believe that you can throw something "away".

The most common found in US surface water are antibiotics and antidepressants. With antibiotic resistant bacteria on the rise, it is only a matter of time before one of them develops a positive, can-do attitude.
It is telling, the difference between US and Euro water. It seems that they are having a heck of a lot more fun than we are.

Several years ago, researchers in England tested the Thames River down stream from London to check on the effectiveness of sewage-treatment plants. They detected cocaine in the river. Around the same time, scientists in Rome, who were testing the air for acids and other chemicals that might damage the ancient buildings, detected cocaine in the air.

Cocaine is ubiquitous in Europe.

I bet if you tested further you would find Ritalin, Prozac, cialis, birth control meds, pesticides, herbicides, etc.., etc... as well.

I was exposed non-consensually to methamphetmine at the University of West Georgia (one of the worst things to ever happen to me) here in the US & after exposure I was made more aware of the trace amounts of the drug in the water here; I wish this was a whacky conspiracy theory, but it's been demonstrated with modern technology that trace amounts of prescription-drugs are found in city water, so OF COURSE there is meth in the water. After taking a shower I could feel the difference. If the techonology improved, these drugs found in canals & irrigation chanels would be (in all liklihood) found in the filtered water that people drink too... I don't know, 1 part per, what, 2 billion? I don't know the ratio.

Whatever we take, we excrete - usually into the water. It goes beyond mercury poisoning - which has already been proven to cause birth defects in Inuit children, since they primarily consume fish.
