'Detente': GOP Leadership To Make Historic Appearance Before Gay Rights Group

Cornyn

Breaking new ground in the Republican Party's relationship with the gay community, the leaders of the GOP's two congressional campaign committees will be honored at a fundraising reception hosted by the Log Cabin Republicans on Wednesday evening.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, are this year's recipients of the Barry Goldwater Award recognizing "leaders in the Republican Party who have served their nation with distinction in the model of the late Senator Barry Goldwater." Cornyn is scheduled to attend the dinner. Sessions was forced to cancel last minute due to a House GOP Conference meeting. He is recording a video message to the group and sending an NRCC staffer in his place.

Neither Texan has a particularly strong gay-rights record. Both oppose same-sex marriage and Cornyn, just on Tuesday, joined other Republicans in blocking consideration of an amendment to end Don't Ask Don't Tell. But being honored at the Log Cabin event is both remarkable and historic, reflecting a small but important tectonic shift in GOP politics. Casey Pick, the programs officer at the Log Cabin Republicans confirmed that it is the "first time" that a single head of a Republican campaign committee has attended the dinner.

The ceremony, he added, symbolized a "détente" or "thawing" of the Republican Party's relationship with the gay community. "We are quite proud of this. It represents unprecedented access and our strength in the party. We are in a very different election cycle than we have been in the past. There is a recognition that social issues are a distraction."

Social conservatives would disagree, of course. And in anticipation of Cornyn's appearance at the Log Cabin Republican event, the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins wrote a scolding letter to the senator.

"In light of all this activity against both Republicans and conservatives, it is deeply troubling to me that you would lend your credibility to this organization," Perkins wrote. "Your work in the U.S. Senate on issues important to the family is well known, as is your close association with Family Research Council and the work we do, which makes the association all the more distressing.

"In deference to the work you have done against the debasement of our culture, I would ask respectfully that you withdraw from attending the event."

Perkins carries weight in Republican circles. And in election cycles past, a letter like his may have persuaded Cornyn's to drop his appearance. But the senator wrote back a few days later relaying that he was going ahead with the Log Cabin event.

"Respecting each other's dignity is not about ignoring those disagreements, but rather being honest about them, and working together where possible despite them," wrote Cornyn.

Paul Lindsay, an NRCC spokesman, meanwhile, defended Session's appearance at the event by noting that: "Part of his responsibilities as Chairman of the NRCC is to meet with Republican groups that share our goal of retiring Nancy Pelosi, and he is open to scheduling a time with the National Log Cabin Republicans at a later date."

I just love it how everyone is ignoring the deceitful dishonest way the Aristocrats, sorry, Democrats package each piece of legislature as part of some other loosely related (that's being generous) legislature and than trash anyone for not not voting on the "distraction" part of the bill. This is classic. Why must DADT be part of a defense spending initiative? Are they afraid to have an independant vote on DADT? After all, it is Obama's promise to repeal DADT that is that is on the line here. I mean this is all on Obama. How can anyone not see through the cheap political ploy to perpetuate this "party of No" farce by attaching every piece of controvertial legislation to something that is of pressing need...that is low...that is gutter. And anyone reading this should know, I personally am all for repealing DADT, But with the dishonest way the Dems pose themselves, they are solely to blame if it doesn't happen...Obama's promise included. And I think you all know that!!!

read some history, it is not just Democrats putting together hodge podge bills with totally unrelated items there is a long history of such legislation. As for the Party of No being a farce I have to agree they are.

Maybe Senators Cornyn and Sessions are just trawling for some hot young Texan to lift their luggage.

Seriously people, the most telling observation is that after criticizing Clinton for years and advocating for Republicans to run the government, because it would be better; Rich Tafael immediately resigned as head of Log Cabin Republicans because he knew he could not deliver on his promises and that Rove/W was going to be an anti-gay government. Gays who worked to put W in office and were in the Administration were told to keep quiet about that gay stuff if they wanted to go anywhere in that administration.
01:13 PM on 09/23/2010
Got proof? Or is this just your observation?

Lets get real. Obama and the Democrats could have easily gotten rid of don't ask to tell. They would have have had ANY PROBLEM getting the 60 votes needed in the Senate.

By why didn't they? Because they don't want to lose their carrot!

The Democratic caucus is against gay marriage so they only offer repeal of DADT

Dick Cheney's daughter is gay. Dick Cheney is not against gay marriage. More and more republicans are coming out of the closet. So conservatives ask themselves, do I disown friends and children or change my view?

You are seeing a change in the heart of conservatives.

So while Democrats are dangling that carrot in front of your face, a group of Republicans did more than any democrat yet.

They challenged in court and won! A federal judge ruled "don't ask don't tell" unconstitutional. Now it goes through appeals.

Will the Justice department appeal it? Yet at the same time the administration is trying to get rid of it?

If the Democrats in the Senate really get rid of DADT they wouldn't have tried to ram it through with out debate. But the vote and press release was just a game to place that carrot in front of the gay/lesbian movement.

This is no different than pandering for the marijuana sub culture vote. They had the power but did they legalize marijuana? NO AND THEY NEVER WILL!

Im sorry. I thought I was talking about Republicans. I don't disagree with much of what you said about the Democrats.

Q: How can you spot a Log Cabin Republican?

A: He'll be the old hag in a gay bar on a steady diet of Merlot, buying (or trying to buy) "Jager-bombs" for all the boys...

If Corynyn shows up with his hair dyed platinum with pepper highlights, and wearing extensions, then this talk of a "Gaytente" might have some TRUTH behind it!!!

This Perkins guy is a real turdball. What's wrong with going to dinner with some gay Republicans? It happens everyday in real life. It is disturbing that this is so grow dbreaking, though. This shouldn't even be an issue.

It was no problem every time James Dobson and George Rekers dined for dinner; up and until the whole "Rentboy" incident happened, of course.

Yeah, because it's election time. But filibuster DADT. Don't be snookered gays.

That's Stockholm Syndrome, but you're close enough. Maybe these gay Repugs are in the grip of the illusion that money and political affiliations will protect them.
01:19 AM on 09/23/2010
Anyone who can't see that this is a last minute attempt to pick up some gay votes must be totally blind. I love how Cornyn says this conference will "thaw" the relationship between republicans and the gay community. I'm sure it will, especially right after the GOP unanimously blocks a repeal of don't ask don't tell. What a joke. The republicans just enjoy slapping the gay community in the face. They may as well just come out and say "we support the gays, except for when it comes to your same sex relationships and marriages cause it goes against the bible (and if its allowed then soon people will be marrying their farm animals), allowing you to adopt children who need homes, and allowing you to openly serve in the military. Oh, and you may be the reason god is punishing America by killing our soldiers."

Does anyone take this seriously?

Well, unfortunately, conservative gays have a curiously high tolerance for being slapped in the face. You watch -- they'll lap it up and come back for more.

It is very doubtful that any conservative republican will ever vote for anything that approaches something like "gay rights". This is simply an attempt to get rich gay folks to forego their interest in social issues...and vote purely on issues like low taxes for the wealthy and no governmental regulation of big business. Seems to be working. The Log Cabin Republicans need to stand for something meaningful...being silent on filibuster of DADT is not the right thing to do. Repeal of DADT is really not even all that controversial, if they cannot even do even support that, what can they be expected to support?
