Biden's 'Republican Tea Party' Remarks Prompt Negative Reactions On Capitol Hill

After Vice President Joe Biden said the alternative to a Democratically controlled Congress is the "Republican Tea Party," lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have moved to distance themselves from his remarks.

"I can't imagine any elected official making fun of people becoming highly involved in the electoral process," said Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) when asked to comment on Biden's remarks. "I just don't see how that's healthy. And yes, I think people who might criticize people getting highly engaged in the electoral process -- I think that's problematic and I just don't understand why one would perceive criticizing that to be a good thing."

Democrats dealt with the matter a bit more delicately.

"I think there are some fine people who are concerned about the size of the government, concerned about tax structure, concerned about the future," said Ben Nelson (D-Neb.). "And what we ought to do is have a dialogue."

"Accurately analyzing Tea Party supporters can be difficult," said Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.). "So I try to avoid kind of broad generalizations or broad categories. It's always dangerous to generalize."

At a fundraiser for Gov. Ted Strickland in Ohio, Biden linked the GOP to the Tea Party, suggesting Democrats will run against the conservative activists. "Don't compare me to the Almighty, compare me to the alternative," he said, according the pool report. "The Republican Tea Party is the alternative."

Biden's approach reflects a strategy being considered by the White House, according to the New York Times. The White House, however, denies it.

Lawmakers at the Capitol on Tuesday told HuffPost that it's probably a good idea to pursue a new strategy and not to antagonize Tea Party members.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) told reporters that the grassroots activism we've seen so far is just "the tip of the iceberg," and that while the activist logo of the Tea Party seems to be more linked to the Republican party, "Republicans, Democrats and Independents are just fed up with our government."

Corker, unsurprisingly, agrees.

"At the town hall meetings that I experienced in Tennessee," said Corker, "there was a real sober concern that people had about -- especially debt. Who isn't concerned about our indebtedness right now? It is out of control... I think most of the people who have become highly engaged in this election this year that haven't in the past, have focused on that issue. So how can you not agree that that's something that we have to deal with as a country?"

It's not our fault that a good idea was hijacked by the lunatic fringe and polluted into what it is today under the guise of false nationalism.  The Tea "Party" is an unfocused and unskilled group that appeals to the worst of the reactionaries in this country.  Anyone can get mad and whine, but they offer NO specific, realistic plans that involve any more depth than a bumper  Read More...

Don't call Republicans Tea Baggers, they are not Baggers, they just use the Baggers to get elected. And if some of the Baggers get elected, they will be shown the way to prosperity, but their older and wiser Republican leaders.

GOP has rebranded as Tea Party, because even republicans can't stand to be associated with the disgraceful republican party.

Anyone voting for the Tea candidate who doesn't realize they have voted GOP, is re ta rd ed!

I don't get Bob corker's remarks. How is what VP Biden said making fun of anyone?

Anyone who doesn't acknowledge the Tea party's relationship with the GOP is either brain d'ead, or in severe denial! EVERY Tea-related candidate who won nominations, won GOP nominations!

I don't see what the big deal was with Biden's comments. Is HuffPo deliberately leaving the rest of them out, or is that it?

My point exactly, a few comments up. Linking the Tea Party to the GOP is not making fun of ANYONE. It is simply pointing out the truth!

Republicans saying
' How dare you insult tea partiers by calling them republican.'

... methinks this makes Biden's point.

Biden is a liability for Obama. Keeps opening his mouth with no regards to the implications. The Tea Party folk are definitely on the far right, but they are not Republicans. If they were, they wouldn't have the highly electable GOP candidates losing to extremists nut jobs that cannot win in November. Biden is reinforcing the TP that they should align themselves with the GOP. So do the Dems really want a highly motivated grass roots movement getting behind the GOP? In the 2008 elections the Dems used this model to take control of the White House and Congress. Aligning them is contrary to the Dems goals of retaining control. Biden needs to pause before speaks.

I wouldn't really care if people wanted to get involved in the electoral process but 'the tea party' is plagued with people too stupid to represent anyone. They don't seem to understand that the ORIGINAL tea party was over 'taxation without representation' which they are not hassled with. They may not LIKE IT but they are represented. They also coined the term 'tea bagger' themselves, only proving they're at least as out of touch if not MORE out of touch than everyone else in government. They champion people who's problems are 'masturbation is adultery' etc..

Weak. Oh well. It goes to show you that the biggest, most exploited right in this country is the right to be ignorant! lol

They like the spirit of the Tea Party, you need to calm down.

If the Tea Party has made a mistake, it's allowing in social-moral conservatives like Christine O'Donnell as candidates which annoys some social moral liberals who are involved as well as libertarians and it stirs up raving liberals such as yourself.

Now folks such as yourself can unleash whatever torrent you want on the Tea Party and it will probably stick for those who don't know any better. But keep raving like a loony, you might swing things back in the favor of the Tea Party.
12:10 AM on 09/24/2010
Libertarians are irrelevant in the Tea Party. They have been for several months. You just watch Rand Paul--once he gets elected--and see whether he votes like a Libertarian or like a Republican trampling on Libertarian principles. Libertarians sold out. They went after the big crowds and the big marches and they allowed Republicans to take over their movement. To quote from a very bad Nicholas Cage movie: "If you dance with the devil, the devil don't change. The devil changes you."
