Homeless College Student Who Took Refuge In Music Practice Rooms Honored

Cal State Long Beach student Brian K. Smith is passionate about his education. When the music major lost his financial aid and student loans due to unit limitations, he became homeless.

To maintain his 3.65 GPA, Smith began sleeping in the practice rooms of the music department, the Daily 49er, CSLB's student newspaper reports.

"I didn't know what else to do," Smith said. "Education is so important to me. I knew I would get over this hurdle."

Smith was one of 23 California State University students to receive the Hearst/CSU Trustees' award Tuesday, a $3,000 scholarship to honor his perseverance.
