• Van Tran campaign manager George Andrews: “At a time when our state faces an unemployment rate above 12 percent, Loretta Sanchez resorts to insensitive racist attacks against her own constituents. So I don't know the real story, and if she truly did say things as the report claims she did, that's terrible and she should be condemned for it.

However - the story comes from the notoriously conservative OC Register, so I guarantee you, they're doing whatever they can to discredit the most successful Democrat in Orange County. I wouldn't be surprised if the quote was taken completely out of context and that the full story reveals her trying to make a completely different point, like Shirley Sherrod. I'm waiting until we hear the full story.

Loretta Sanchez is 100% correct. Understanding Southern California politics is essential before making a comment here.

Wow, it appears that we have a looney on our side of the aisle. I am thankful that we only have 2% of the loonies in Congress, though.

I have no problem with any person being Vietnamese. I DO have a problem with the KIND of person or Vietnamese that they are. Most of the people who had to flee South Vietnam were the traitors to their country. They were the ones who fought for the French to keep Vietnam French. Then the Japanese invaded, and they joined the Japanese in keeping Vietnam safe for the Japanese and Vichy French. They also helped hunt and turn over to the Japanese any American pilots who were shot down over Indochina.

After WWII, they helped the French restore French rule in Vietnam and when the French lost that war, they fled south to the US puppet state and established the Diem dictatorship. So the folks who support Van Tran are people who betray their own country and people for their OWN interests and enrichment at the expense of the people of their country. They make a perfect fit into the GOP since they have such shared values. They showed a stunning lack of respect for democracy and decency when they had their own state and ran it into the ground. Such people need to be called out for what they are.

At least she didn't use the "G" word. All in all, she should apologize and move on.

It was an idiotic comment and she should apologize for it immediately. Why would you say anything to give this man any ammunition. Stick to his policies....and ignore his ethnicity

Since there seems to be a lot of proof of his racism, she needs to bring forth videos of his making these statements so the people in her district can see this. Just saying it isn't enough. He certainly doesn't seem to be "of the people". She really needs to get out there and fire up her constituency, Mexican Americans as well as Vietnamese.

Yet, given OC Republican intense dislike of Sanchez, the race could develop into a bruising affair.

Sanchez, with her predominantly Hispanic constituents, is the only Democrat representative from Orange County, and Tran appeals to the rest of Orange County to help him defeat Sanchez.

From the same Orange County Register article below:

Outsiders are speculating that the 47th Congressional District (Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Anaheim) makes Tran a serious threat to Sanchez because of the growing political participation of Vietnamese Americans who have stunned the political scene (specifically the much larger Latino establishment) in recent years with surprising ballot-box muscle flexing.

And Tran, 44, is talking tough: He reading out of the DC GOP playbook that demonizes Nancy Pelosi and is calling himself the candidate who'd, unlike Sanchez, actually represent the district's interests.

Sounds like more than one political candidate behaving badly.

Folks, we're not running elections to race faster to the bottom rung in our civility

there are some real issues to worry about - 2 active war fronts,   a very tough economy for starters
