Christine O'Donnell: 'Evolution Is A Myth. Why Aren't Monkeys Still Evolving Into Humans?' (VIDEO)

Bill Maher has so far kept his promise to air an embarrassing clip of Tea Party favorite and Delaware Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell every week that she refuses to be a guest on his HBO show, "Real Time."

Last night Maher showed a video from an appearance she made in 1998 on his old program "Politically Incorrect" in which she calls evolution "a myth" and backs up her claim with the question: if evolution is real, "why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans?"

This latest uncovered statement comes on the heels of a clip unearthed from an old "Scarborough Country" episode in which she insists that we stop the whole nation from having sex.

Since she was a guest on Maher's previous show 22 times, it's unlikely that the steady stream of past statements coming to light will stop any time soon.

O'DONNELL: You know what, evolution is a myth. And even Darwin himself -

MAHER: Evolution is a myth? Have you ever looked at a monkey?

O'DONNELL: Well then, why they -- why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans?

If a virgin gave birth to Jesus, then how come virgins still aren't giving birth to Jesus? (apologies if someone else here thought of this one)

So evolution is a myth, but at some point witchcraft made sense to her. Who in Delaware actually voted for this woman? I can't believe the Tea Partiers haven't outspokenly disowned her. Have any of them?

It's the opposite parallel of a question I ask....if the Bible is the be-all-end-all of recorded history, then where are the dinosaurs...we have proof they were here.

If you can't trust a book to tell you where you came from, how can you trust it to tell you where you're going?

The "proof" is actually part of a conspiracy by liberal scientists forcing their anti-religion agenda on the ignorant masses. Those fossils are fakes and thus prove nothing! Just like how global warming is a hoax, the moon landing never happened, and George W. Bush is a reptilian humanoid.

I'm a Republican. Not necessarily a Christine O'Donnell fan because I think we need politicians with better financial understanding in these tough economic times.

Having said that, I do agree with her statement with regard to monkeys. If evolution is the 100% sure fire truth, why don't we see continued branching of species such as monkeys into higher order beings? We should continue to see Monkeys giving birth to both more and less monkey like beings since evolution (and de-evolution) without God would be constantly occurring.

Evolution would not be the first theory to be debunked after centuries of belief.

Christians can't prove God, and Evolutionist can't prove Punctuated Equilibrium based Evolution so who is to say that O'Donnell is wrong and that super-smug Maher is right? Both Maher and O'Donnel have degrees in English not a scientific discipline.

Because we didnt evolve from monkeys and we didnt do it in the early 21st century african biosphere. It took some very specific conditions for one branch of ape to turn down our path, such as the creation of the african savannah that may have led to us leaving or losing our forests and walking upright. Then there are the time scales involved, the issue of available niches, the issue of fortunate mutations, and the fact that we are not the end product for all evolution. But evolution does continue. It's just not trying to turn every species into us.

The fact that you made such basic errors tells me what you already know. That you've never seriously looked at this issue. You are comfortable with your beliefs and don't want them disturbed. You know it. I know it. Let's not pretend otherwise.

First off you should read what Evolution actually explains. Judging from you comment and?or question ,You obviously haven't even tried to understand the theory
Sure. ,theories are debunked after centuries of belief but we live in a world where science is doubling it's knowledge every few years, that means a bad theory and one that has this many implications is tested regularly and could never survive unless it continuously provided significant information, revelations and predictions in that science. No one has offered a better explanation or any that have enabled so many scientist to make connections, apply these theories to other sciences (i.e. genetics, medicine, disease study, natural history, immunology). These inter related, life saving , vital sciences and the consequential discoveries they have provided have been arrived at by the study of and acceptance of the theory of evolution. The other theories? Not so much. When the theory of Intelligent Design can lead to the development of a life saving medicine, vaccination,or drought resistant crops as The concept of Evolutionary Theory has ,it will be taken seriously.

“Why aren’t monkeys still evolving into humans?”

This is the problem with so many creationists; a total lack of understanding of how evolution works.

1. Today’s monkeys evolved from a common ancestor of man on a different branch so it’s not likely that they will be evolving into humans but even if...

2. There is no predetermined outcome to evolution meaning that today’s primates though they may evolve into something different from their current form are not necessarily going to evolve into something human-like.

3. Evolution takes a long time, was she thinking that there perhaps there should have been a physical change in monkeys over the last 100-300 years?

Darwinism hasn't been proven to date. As a matter of fact, his evolution theory has bigger potholes than New York streets. When Darwinism can prove man came from a fish (which the fish he claimed evolved into mankind was found in African waters) I'll believe it. Wait, I'll just ask his great-grandfather when I see him what he believes.

So you don't believe in DNA, either? Or biology? Or geology? The evidence of the correctness of evolution is abundant and beyond serious dispute unless you think God created Earth in 4004 BC. Go to your local library and do some reading to see why.

We can directly measure the relationship among the species by examining their DNA, and tell just when they diverged from an ancestral form. We know when chimps and humans had the same ancestors, and when those ancestors shared even earlier ancestors --- like fish.

What potholes are you talking about? Making a broad statement with no facts to back your claim? Vaccines that save countless lives are created because of what scientists know about evolution.

“why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans”?
They’ve likely seen you on TV Chris, and decided its an evolutionary dead end. They’ll possibly try to develop into something with better prospects, like maybe a mollusc. Though thinking about it. Its not really our fault. Since if we all came from a small close-knit nucleus of human-like individuals. There must have been an awful lot of inbreeding going on. To get our numbers up to sustainable levels.

Every time I hear something that Christine O'Donnell, Sarah Palin, or Sharon Angle has said, I see evidence that monkeys are still evolving.

Christine O'Donnell is not a myth.

Unfortunately.

Does anyone else think that Bill Maher twisted her question? She was not asking why she can't see monkeys evolve before her eyes. She's asking what made the monkey evolve into a monkey and the human into a human when we share a common ancestor. The answer given by evolution is chance: whether it's a mutation or one ancient primate broke away from the pack for some reason and was faced with a different environment from the rest of the herd. To religious people, that's just not a satisfying answer, because they presuppose an intelligent designer. But when it comes down to it, whether you believe in chance or in design is still a belief. Just because species change over millions of years doesn't mean that some intelligent designer could not have put it into motion way back when, and all the changes are part of the plan.
09:07 AM on 09/28/2010
No, I don't think Bill twisted her question. Remember, she is not a nuanced thinker, and she clearly does not have the capacity to understand "time" in the sense that we are talking about when we describe evolutionary or geological processes.
09:48 AM on 09/28/2010
1. There is genetic evidence for evolutionary history that matches the fossil evidence.

2. Scientists are not in the business of disproving the existence of God. The proof of evolution does not disprove God; it's not scientists who are claiming it is one side vs the other.

"Christians" like O'Connell are a slap in the face to those of us who are spiritual, but choose to follow the teachings of Christ and his message of love and tolerance. Her philosophy seems to be amazingly similar to the Taliban, subservient women, no sex, and treat people as if it is the dark ages. I thought America was supposed to be better than the Taliban, not aspire to copy them.

Sweet Jeesus...are they really thinking about electing this woman? Christine, Christine...here: this is a dictionary: look up the word "incontrovertible." It is an adjective, which means "unable to be disputed." Now, based on the fossil record, and evidence of DNA analysis and other precise scientific methods, evolution is as incontrovertible as geometry. Surely you understand a right angle is a right angle, and a2 + b2 = c2, right? That's the quality of evolution in the enlightened community of minds.
