Larry Gagosian Buys A. Quincy Jones-Designed Holmby Hills Mansion

Via Curbed LA: We featured this A. Quincy Jones-designed mansion in the Holmby Hills earlier this year, when internet entrepreneur and philanthropist David Bohnett put it on the market for $18.9 million. According to Curbed LA, art dealer and gallery owner Larry Gagosian bought the home for $15.5 million in July.

Hollywood actor Gary Cooper commissioned the home in the early 1950s. He had just finished work on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead where he portrayed Howard Roark, an uncompromising modernist architect who blows up his own skyscraper rather than collaborate with others on its construction. CA-Modern magazine writes that the press at the time guessed that the actor "saw himself as Howard Roark reborn." In fact, clarifies daughter Maria Cooper Janis, the Coopers had always been fans of modernist architecture and had already built two other homes in this style before settling in Holmby Hills. Cooper lived in the A. Quincy Jones design with his wife and daughter until his death in 1961.
