Prop 23: Schwarzenegger Blasts Big Oil For 'Self-Serving Greed'

Schwarzenegger Big Oil

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday blasted the out-of-state oil companies that are trying to undermine California's global warming law, saying they are motivated purely by greed.

Companies such as Valero Energy Corp., Tesoro Corp. and Koch Industries are spending millions of dollars to manipulate the will of Californians and "buy votes," the Republican governor told the Commonwealth Club.

Their motivation, he said, is "self-serving greed."

The companies are sponsoring Proposition 23 on the Nov. 2 ballot, which would indefinitely suspend California's 2006 law that calls for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Opponents of the law, AB32, say it will place a financial burden on businesses and cost California jobs. They propose delaying its implementation until the state's unemployment rate falls from its current 12.4 percent to 5.5 percent and stays there for a year.

"All this will do is put the global warming law off until unemployment is at a rate closer to what it was when Legislature passed the law, and until a time when California won't be going it alone," said Anita Mangels, a spokeswoman for the Yes on 23 campaign.

Schwarzenegger said the law may cost some jobs but will more than make up for the losses by boosting the clean-technology industry. He questioned the true motivation behind the oil companies' support for the ballot measure.

"They really don't just want to suspend it, they want to kill this initiative, kill our laws," he said. "Does anyone really believe that these companies, out of the goodness of their black oil hearts, are spending millions and millions of dollars to protect our jobs?"

Mangels called the governor's comments "disappointing," and said the list of Proposition 23 supporters extends far beyond the petroleum industry.

Schwarzenegger's address came on the four-year anniversary of AB32, which requires the state to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2020. The California Air Resources Board is currently developing regulations to implement it.

The governor warned that the passage of Proposition 23 would have repercussions far beyond California.

"This is not just about California; it is about America's economic prosperity and leadership in the years ahead," he said of the climate law. "California is America's last hope for energy change."

I drive a Honda CNG, i believe in the principles of AB32! I'm a engineer in a manufacturing plant and I don't understand AB32. Energy is a national issue! LADWP in attempt to go green has raised the electricity rates 55% in 3 years, at the plant I work at, forcing me to lay off 100 people out of 400. I took a 12.5% pay reduction! For a local politician to sacrifice current manufacturing jobs for the potential of green jobs without understanding the basics of green energy is wrong! China has captured most of the green energy market using dirty coal to melt silica for solar arrays and steel for wind turbines. The only green jobs in California are installation of Chinese products. How does this make sense!!!!???? It will take many years of the solar array use to justify the difference in the pollution created by making the solar panel with dirty coal verses using natural gas in the first place! Green energy is about engineering not Harry Potter style GREEN MAGIC. The politicians say green jobs will be created here! What kind of manufacturing green jobs will be made - installing chinese products won't grow our economy!

Governor Schwarzenegger, please stop giving away taxpayer monies to Wealthy Developers and Veto California AB 2531 Today!

I also became familiar with California AB 2531 very recently which is a total takeover from California working class taxpayers by Billionaire developers through the Redevelopment agency. In a Reverse-Robin Hood way, the Redevelopment Agency takes away property taxes that should have gone to city services and the schools and gives this money to Developers.

It also makes the area blighted by condemning functioning small businesses and minority businesses who don't have the funds to defend themselves. Then the Redevelopment agency gives property at an extremely discounted price (thanks again to the working class taxpayer) to the Developer who is well connected and continues to help them with low interest loans paid back with taxpayer dollars.

If AB 2531 is allowed to pass today, this behavior will be rewarded and expanded spinning Los Angeles and California further into debt while rewarding the rich!

I see you know quite well the deceptive nature of the CRA and of AB 2531. Arnie is counting on people not knowing.

AB 2531 whoever heard of that? I looked it up. It is much more than theft of private property. It then allows the government to give the thieves millions of dollars to "develop" the property that used to be yours. Or they let is still there for years with no development and give it to whomever they want. No project was ever build in New London. They just seized the homes and tore them down.

If you have a tree or house that blocks The Governator's view, he can get the city to Kelo you land and then bull doze your house and all the offending trees. Isn' life grat when you have the Terminator as Governor?

Don't believe Arnold for a second. It's is all play acting. He knows his speech will do nothing except smooth his return to Hollywood.

At the same time he allowing Kelo v City New London eminent Domain to become the law for the City of Los Angeles. Arnold knows speeches on the environment will do nothing and he knows he alone can stop Kelo eminent domain in Calif by vetoing AB 2531 -- but he has done nothing and today is the deadline.

Kelo v new London is the case that allows corrupt officials to take anyone's land and give it to their developer friends. As Arnold returns to L.A., that is what he is doing. AB 2531 will make the entire city subject to Kelo-Eminent Domain so that his developer buddies can steal anyone's land.

Today is the last day for Arnold to veto AB 2531. He talks the talk in public and never walks the walk in reality -- a big girlie-man if there ever was one

I just love futuristic action-adventure movies, especially when the planet's survival is at stake and the villains are so completely evil. So it's great to see the Governator taking on the Koch brothers, Valero Energy Corp., and Tesoro Corp while defending the fate of the our environment and the "green economy." Here's the way I visualize the scene:

THIS story is already completely off of HuffPost's Front Page. Speech given less than 48 hours ago. I had to search the Huffington Post for 'Schwarzenegger' & 'proposition 23' to find this page!

A sitting governor BLASTING OIL COMPANIES for anything at all is big news. I guess the editor had to make room for Sarah Palin possibly being snubbed. Never mind.

You're being duped. Huff Post probably caught on that Arnie's speech was all Self-Serving Greed. Arnie is returning to Hollywood and he is trying to mend some fences. Most Hollywood types live in a world where image is everything. Thus, Arnie knows that if he makes a dramatic speech or two, Hollywood will accept the image as reality.

Meanwhile, Arnie is opening up California to Kelo-eminent domain -- Kelo is real disaster as it makes every piece of private property vulnerable to the City of LA. With Kelo they can steal any piece of property and give it to a councilman's brother-in-law or a campaign contributor. Kelo allows the wealthy to rampage throughout the city stealing any proeprty they want.

If Arnie wants to open a new restaurant and he wants the land where your restaurant sits, the city can now Kelo it and give it to Arnie.

That's why Arnie has not vetoed AB 2531 -- when he returns to LA, he and his developer buddies want to steal as much real estate for fun and profits as their greedy little hands can seize.

You're being scammed. It is all Show to smooth his re-entry to Hollywood.

If Arnie gave two cents about California, he would veto Ab 2531 which allows the City of LA to steal anyone's land and give it to a private developer (campaign contributor) for private profit.

Keith O should have known better, but glitz gets in everyone's eyes. Actions speak louder than words and Arnie's actions say "Screw everyone but me."

Arnold is turning on his investors? Nero played the fiddle when Rome burned. Arnold takes his hog for a ride. What a dope.

California let the GOP run the state.

This is what you get voters, a Hollywood hitman, terminator, a Hollywood actor. Why not a surfer next time? Why not the President of SAG? Oh, you already voted for the President of SAG. First, you voted for Reagan as Governor and next U.S. President. Pity, the voters in California don't care, so why should leaders like Arnold?

"Black Oil Hearts" WHAT A GREAT QUOTE. I wish I had a video to post. Thank goodness for Gov. Schwarzeneggar.

After listening to this speech on Countdown, I searched for news articles for the public's reaction. Nothing. Except The Huff Post. I searched the LA Times barely a 100 words buried in the paper. Media is incredibly powerful. eg listening to my local newscast (Denver a large urban area) one sentence on unemployment compensation "fails to pass in Congress". Nothing about the machinations of trying to pass anything that will benefit our economy. People with limited time, concern or brain cells get a limited view of current events. Which of course can make them easily manipulated. Especially with the millions being used by the hatemongers on the right.

And now Bill O is calling for defunding PBS because it's a liberal propaganda outlet. That has had me upset for hours. You know his extreme right wing/teapublican viewers will take up this mantra. It's certainly a place I know I am most likely to get real information, besides all the education stuff like Ken Burns, Nova, American Experience, etc. and quality entertainment. I'm boiling. Shut off any discourse that doesn't agree with Faux News.

yay to the most restrictive "climate disruption" law in the world! LOL

schwarzefailure's global warming FINAL solutions act will go down in the toilet in november. no private, CO2 spewing jet he ever owns will save it.

AG jerry brown tried making the wording for the prop claim it would reverse pollution controls... and a judge threw it out! since when is CO2 pollution? better hold your breath!

and when the state government demanded a study be done on ahnold's new act and its future effects, the university study said it would cost a million jobs! LOL. even the claims from the anti-prop 23 side that it would create 100,000 "green" jobs were bogus. they had to change it later to say it was more like 10,000 green jobs.

yes on prop 23!

"since when is CO2 pollution?"

You are comparing the human lungs to huge combustion engines spewing black muck all over the planet. It doesn't sound as clever as you think it does. As least to those of us who look toward science rather than bumper sticker language for public policy.

Wily and scout

The story is being buried because it is BS. Arnies doesn't give a damn for anyone by Arnie

right now Arnie is Kelo-ing the City of Los Angeles by not vetoing AB 2531. Kelo v City of New London is the US Supreme Court case that allows cities to steal anyone's property and give it to their friends and cronies. Now that Arnie is returning to Hollywood, he is saying "green" things about the environment, but at the same time, he has not vetoed AB 2531.

I imagine that Arnie plans to go into more real estate, and AB 2531 will allow Arnie to take anyone's property If your parents are in the 80's and ahv lived in their home for 55 years and Arnie wants that property, it's Arnie's property now. All he does he get his buddies at City Hall to Kelo your parents property and give it to him.

Here's a more important test for Arnie. Kelo v City of New London -- AB 2531 will enact that horrible US Supreme Court case for all of Los Angeles. See "Dangerous New Bill about to Become LA Law" by Ziggy Kruse, CityWatch

It is one thing for Arnie to make some ineffectual public statements that do nothing, but the real test is how he acts. Will he afflict the City of Los Angeles with Kelo-Eminent Domain?

Kelo-Eminent Domain is where the government takes your property not for public use but to give it to a campaign contributor so he can "develop" the property or flip the property and make a fortune.

Let's see if Arnie is still the puppet of the Pete Wilson GOP or will he veto AB 2531.

Proposition 23 will go down in flames and hopefully take Fiorina with it.
