Ted Stevens Burial

JUNEAU, Alaska — Former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens will be buried Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Stevens was one of five people killed in plane crash Aug. 9 in southwest Alaska. He was 86.

Four people survived, including former NASA chief Sean O'Keefe. The group was on its way to a fishing trip.

Stevens was a World War II veteran and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was the longest-serving Republican in Senate history.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski doesn't plan to attend the service. Murkowski, who considered Stevens a mentor and spoke at his funeral, said Stevens' widow urged her to stay in Alaska and focus on her write-in campaign.

What an affront to the memory of military service members. Will Stevens at least be put in the indicted criminal section and away from real heros?

Well deserved honor. However, I would think he would have preferred to be laid to rest in the great state he helped develop into one of our greatest assets. Either way, RIP.

Ted Stevens treated Alaska for years like it was his personal political fiefdom, not unlike how his good friend Dan Inouye has operated in Hawaii. I fully realize than both men meant well, but the net effect was to retard the scene in their respective states, by promoting and fostering a political cast of characters who are beholden first and foremost to their primary benefactor, rather than the constituents they ostensibly serve. I've now said my piece, will think some kind thoughts for the former senator's surviving family members, and will say no more.

Say what you will about this guy, but it's really sad what happened. I hope he's in the big series of tubes in the sky.
