Joe Biden Defines Midterm Election Stakes: Democrats Vs. Tea Party

Joe Biden Tea Party Democrats Midterm Election

(AP) - Vice President Joe Biden went to the state where he was born Tuesday to plead to a university crowd to take tea party candidates seriously, or lose the opportunity to build on the progress Democrats have made the past two years.

With Republicans pointing to net job losses since President Barack Obama took office, Biden warned that Democrats will lose an election if voters are driven by anger over how they have fared during the recession.

"Folks, if we allow this to be a referendum on whether people are happy about where they are now, we will lose and we will deserve to lose," Biden told a crowd of more than a thousand on the campus of Penn State, Pennsylvania's largest university.

Democrats, he said, must make the election a choice between their progress and a "Republican tea party" that will bring Obama's agenda to a screeching halt if they take back the House and Senate.

"If we don't taken them seriously, they mean what they say," Biden said. "And the only thing that can allow them to win is our apathy or our anger, instead of going out there and making this is a choice."

Biden's speech was timed to coincide with similar appearances by Obama and other Democrats to try to rekindle the enthusiasm of young voters five weeks away from the Nov. 2 midterm election.

This year, Pennsylvania is a priority for the national parties because of its closely contested race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Arlen Specter.

A Quinnipiac University poll last week showed Republican Pat Toomey with an apparent lead over Democrat Joe Sestak in that race.

Biden touted a variety of steps made by the Obama administration to help younger voters, such as protecting college students from the predatory practices of credit card companies, allowing them to remain insured by their parents' health care plans until they're 26 and expanding access to college grants and loans.

Two Penn State students in the crowd, Andrew Goga and David Knoppers, both 20, cited "politics as usual" and mudslinging as reasons why enthusiasm among the college crowd has waned since Obama was elected in 2008.

"Everyone was so excited for Obama because he was young and promised change, and now everyone realizes it was politics as usual," said Goga.

A union bricklayer at the event, Jamie Yurick, 33, showed up with his wife, two small children and a number of other members of an area labor council. The two biggest hurdles he said he has in convincing his union brothers to vote for Democrats is assuring them they won't lose their guns and that the economy is cyclical and turning around.

He's right.  The Democratic 'enthusiasm gap' is baby-talk.  So, everything wasn't magically fixed in 2 years - so, we didn't get everything we wanted.  BUT we should all take a long hard minute to think about what the Tea Partiers will do to our country:
- privatize or do away with Social Security
- get rid of or drastically reduce Medicare
- make choice not available to women/girls  Read More...

Quite refreshing :)

GOP strategy= if you're unhappy vote for us, we will win.
Tea Party strategy=yep we are unhappy and we have lists and candidates.
Democrat strategy= We've been busy doing stuff against tons of opposition,
Joe's reminder=They can't win unless we give up.

The Tea Party wants to cut taxes, reduce government and balance the budget.
How and What?

They want a balanced budget -- but millionaires need a tax break.....

They hate government programs --- but like their social security checks....

They hate government programs --- but like medicare paying their doctor bills......

They hate government programs ---- but want their kids to be in good schools....

They hate government programs --- but complain about those potholes.....

They hate government programs --- but sure want police or fire to respond when they have an emergency

They hate government programs -- but want safe drinking water.....

They hate government programs ---- but they want safe food supplies......

They hate government programs --- but they want reliable electric energy......

Democrats are fighting for the middle class...

They need to speak up and not let themselves get drowned out by the 24 hour

Politics as usual???!!! When have these people seen republicans block ALL legislation, shut down unemployment, say your keeping your unborn child born out of rape and incest, regulate your morality, make you work til 70 and then get social security from what's left in your "private plan" and on and on... This is hardly business as usual and Im no youngster. This Nov is dead serious. The tea party folk aren't wrapped tight and I refuse to be a slave for Mcconnell, and DeMint. I'M RUNNING TO THE POLLS FAST AS I CAN!!!!

Remember what happened to President Carter?? He didn't take Reagen seriously and we had him for eight long terrible years. It came about again when the supreme court stepped in and gave us GWB and he got re-elected (just plain scary). Do you want Palin in 2012?? Do you want a GOP controlled congress???? I don't, so get out there and vote.

so the bricklayer is having trouble convincing UNION democrats to vote because they are afraid their GUNS will be taken away??? Really??? REALLY??? That is an issue?? Hhhmmmmm...Obama gets a grade of F from gun control advocates because he has done NOTHING to make the NRA nervous but THAT is the issue....hey dum union guys.....you should be more worried about your companies sending your jobs overseas.....pull your heads out!!

I picked up on that same quote about guns. Normally, I wouldn't applaud a post with so many question marks and caps, but in this case, they are justified.

Thanks. I am just so dumfounded at peoples reasons for not voting for dems against their best interests. If guns is their top priority and its a false issue to be concerned about then its no wonder this country appears ready to let the nuts back in charge of the nut house!

"build on the progress Democrats have made the past two years."

What progress is that, tripling the deficit? Score!

To quote my good friend "PWM":

"Do you guys ever stop spouting lies? The national debt has not
tripled. Here are the FACTS. When Republican Bush was
sworn in on January 20, 2001, the national debt was
$5,727,776,738,304.64. When "W" left office on January 20,
2009, the national debt was $10,626,877,048,913.08. The
growth in the national debt during his eight years in office:
$4,899,100,310,608.44. Today the national debt is:
$13,602,644,007,255. So how does 13.6-10.6 equal 3x10.6"
09:40 AM on 09/29/2010
I didn't say national debt, I said deficit. Do you honestly not realize those two things are different?

The whole Tea Party is a sham. It's nothing but confused and misguided anger being exploited by selfish billionaires, and all of it's followers are being duped. They say things that are absolutely incongrous ALL the time. These people don't even care about making sense (but that describes most of the Republican base).

You would have to be stoopid to believe the discussion is about MoveOn, etc. It is about FreedomWorks, dick Armey, and those nutjobs. Try and stay with us -- or go.
