NEWARK, N.J. — A New Jersey man charged in the fatal shooting of a Seton Hall University student at a party over the weekend is due in court.

Prosecutors say Nicholas Welch will make his first court appearance Wednesday morning in Newark.

The 25-year-old was arrested Monday night at his house in East Orange, on the same street where Friday's party was held.

Police say Welch was refused admittance to the party and returned with a gun and started shooting. Nineteen-year-old honors student Jessica Moore of Disputanta, Va., was killed and four people were injured.

Authorities are searching for a second man who they say provided the gun.

Both Welch and the second suspect, Marcus Bascus, are charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses and are expected to face attempted murder charges.

Yet again we blame the socio-economic status for crimes like these.

Silent Hero quieted.

One of the many, in a long line of sisters that go and outpace mediocrity and educated themselves, setting herself up to the best of us, slaughtered by the least of us for nothing. The disproportion of the petty over the worthwhile is staggering! This is universally unfair and all too common and a great, profound lost to us.

In any urban city in Canada, if someone is seen carrying a weapon, that person had better be a cop or an armed guard or someone will call the cops on them. In America, a crazed killer can walk on the street all the way to their destination and start killing people before anyone realizes something is wrong.

These "crazed killers" in reality don't advertise that they are carrying weapons. It’s not the “Old West” of the movies. That didn’t even really exist. Besides if you want to follow that logic, Vermont does not require registration of firearms nor are you required to have any sort of carry or carry and conceal license for your firearm. They should have just rampant violence, but they have, in fact, the 49th lowest crime rate in the States. While D.C. and Vermont have similar populations, the most murders in Vermont in the last 40 years was 22 in 1981. D.C. is proud that they are down to 100, that is from 479 in 1991. In D.C., in case you didn’t know, you are not allowed to own a gun of any kind. Gun violence and drug trafficking are synonymous, when drug trafficking goes up, so does gun violence shortly after. Canada’s only drug problem is the high cost of prescriptions.

Based on the fact that most of these college shooters don't smile in their Drivers License photos expect to hear someone on the news declare that all people who don't smile in their driver's license to be potential shooters.

Not a racial issue at all. The kid was deranged. Plain and simple - things like this happen. It is very sad and my deepest sympathies go out to the girls families, but the unfortunate reality is that there was nothing that really could have been done to prevent this.

I am just wondering if the NRA will help with the funeral arrangements, some flowers maybe? Better yet, why doesn't the NRA offer to help trace the murder weapons to their source. Let the chips fall where they may. How did those guns get into the hands of these useless pieces of trash? And why isn't the NRA acting like a good citizen and working to prevent a recurrence instead of erecting roadblocks to a safer society? Second thought - will Rev. Al Sharpton make an appearance at this funeral, or is the life of an innocent black person only worth his time when the deceased is a victim of a white policeman's gun? Just wondering.

The NRA is a trade group for the weapons industry. They are all about corporate profits and dead people are the point of their industry. They feel no remorse or waist time thinking about consequences or responsibility. Incidents like this will help their sales so they will just hope for more violence.

Another senseless shooting. Sympathies to the girl's family. There is a lot of anger in some young people today and not enough sense to control or direct it in non-violent ways. There is a major problem in the psyche of society where taking out another human being is the answer to their problems.

You are correct, we have not been consistent in our teaching responsibility and general morality. There is a huge disconnect in reality/consequence when it comes to some of our latest generations.

My first thought before reading the story was that the white kids had acted badly to a black guy and it escalated into violence. Having read the story and thanks to the link provided by spacealien

http://bossip.com/289864/stop-the-violence-arrests-made-in-seton-hall-shooting-where-female-honor-student-was-murdered-trying-to-save-friends/

Obviously this was not a racial issue at all. No matter what was said the partiers showed good judgment in refusing this individual entry. He is clearly a violent sociopath that shot down unarmed women at the party because his feelings were hurt or maybe just because he didn’t get what he wanted when he wanted it. Either way whom ever was responsible for the door was showing both courage and good judgment. This man has forfeited his right to walk among free people ever again and he is young enough that he will have a lifetime to regret his hateful bully BS. I hope he spends a lot of time thinking about this, she will be missed but even his relatives will be ashamed of him and glad he is locked up.

So you tended to leap to a totally unwarranted conclusion?  Why is that?

Because I am human and as a human I am not all knowing and by necessity have to create a model of the world in my mind. Of course no ones understanding is sufficient for them to create anything more than a seriously incomplete and flawed model of the world outside themselves. So my point was that no matter who you are you still need to doubt yourself and read the story and look for more if you are to have the slightest hope of getting it right. Besides that while my initial thought proved to be incorrect that hardly means that it wasn't consistent with the world we live in, so unwarranted is just not right. The problem isn't that first impressions can be incorrect. The problem is when we are so intellectually lazy or just plain pretentious as to rely on them as if we were infallible. Are you claiming to have never had an incorrect first impression?

Dude! This is the face of a man with a weak mind, total insecurity and extreme arrogance. A love interest had to be involved. But come on, man! You go on a shooting rampage because of PRIDE?

This shooter wasn't born to be a killer. There are several reasons America is a global leader in murder; just as there are reasons three of the countries with the lowest--almost non-existent--murder rate are in western Africa. Two more are in Scandinavian countries. Until we take a long, collective look in the mirror and make some major to our social constructs, educational system, and our cancerous souls, we will continue to be a world leader in murder and mayhem.
06:30 PM on 09/28/2010
West and Central Africa have some of the highest rates. With South Africa being the worst. It is still a violent and uncivilized continent.

You need to do more research. I didn't name the countries. In fact, in all of Africa, there are 5 countries with the world's lowest murder rates. But, this is not even my main point.
