HuffPost Sanity Bus: Arianna Offers Buses To Jon Stewart's Rally To Restore Sanity (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/28/10 11:33 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

On Tuesday night's The Daily Show, Arianna announced that HuffPost will provide buses from New York for people who want to attend Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity, scheduled to take place in Washington on October 30.

Arianna joined Stewart to talk about her new book Third World America, but the conversation quickly turned to Stewart's march and how people would be getting to Washington for the event. One audience member told Stewart that he would have difficulty getting there from Manhattan and Arianna told him that he should come to SoHo and ride on the "HuffPost Bus." She then surprised Stewart and his studio audience by pledging that, "we have as many buses as people to fill them." Arianna told Stewart later in the interview, "you just work on the message, I'll work on logistics." A full video of the appearance is below.

Stewart has described the event as "Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement." As of Tuesday, a Facebook page dedicated to the rally shows that over 170,000 people have committed to attend.

The Sanity concept and rally is directed in opposition to the lack of civility in mainstream political discourse, and specifically as a reaction to the recent Glenn Beck "Restoring Honor" rally. I actually accidentally saw this rally unfold.... It started after the Beck rally, when some Colbert fans posted a Facebook page and web page asking Colbert to have a rally to "Restore Truthiness". They got thousands of people to petition Colbert through their website (including me). For a couple of weeks, Colbert ignored it, but then it made the news, and he responded in a vague way on his show, neither confirming or denying he would organize such a rally, which was meant to ridicule the Glenn Beck rally and everything Beck stands for.

Stewart's stated audience were the "regular people, who are too busy to go ton protests", in counterpoint to the Tea Party's "regular people". He was also constructing his rally attenders in opposition to the right wing portrait of the "vast conspiracy of professional protesters" on the left. That's why he emphasized that these people don't go to protests. It was actually a postmodern event in reaction to a previous event, and a media event to show that the American grassroots were not all raving racist, homophobic, religious nuts, or, raving communist lefties. He was trying to get a message to mainstream America by showing how "normal" his protesters were.

Not bad for mainstream America, and especially for a couple of comedians.

I signed up for the bus shortly after the announcement but have received no notice about the logistics as to where and when to board. I am flying to NYC from California tomorrow and I'm concerned that I am going to be "stuck" in New York and won't have a way to get to the rally. That would be really frustrating since attending the rally was a big reason for my timing of the trip. I am considering booking an Amtrak ticket from NY to DC, but that will be another $300 round trip. Can anyone provide me with logistics information for the buses?

Please tell me where is the sign up for the bus? Where is the bus info? Which is worse, keeping a promise or a news story about you breaking a promise that you made to Jon Stewart? (Which the conservative S.O.B.'s will surely pick up on!) There are plenty of NY'ers like myself that did not sign up weeks in advance but that still want to get on your buses to Jon's Rally. How do we sign up now do that? "As many buses as (needed)"? I hope so.

The deadline for signing up was a while ago.

+1, she made it pretty clear that we have nothing to worry about, turns out a lie.

Are there still two sits left on the buses to go to the rally? Can I still book them up?
04:19 PM on 10/26/2010
I have been checking out this site regularly since the day of the announcement and could not find out how to get on the bus. Jon was right. It would be for everyone EXCEPT the last people who tried to get on.
I read the sign up has closed. WHERE WAS THIS SIGN UP?
I am pissed at Ms. Huffington for raising then dashing my hopes. I've 3 people who are eager to go. I do not 'Twitter,' one of the things that keeps me sane. But Ms. H's promises not kept is even more antithetical to everything this silly movement is about. I cannot stand 'generosity' that is limited to people 'in the know' and not the rest of us. (I emailed the post last week and have not yet heard. Notice the thread of hope in my usage of the word yet.)

any buses going from Dallas tx to the Rally?
05:35 PM on 10/23/2010
Am I having negative hallucinations or something? I looked on her site the night Ariana spoke on the Daily Show with her bus offer. I have not seen anything about how to sign up for said buses. Does one need to go on twitter? If so, THAT'S insane. Help?

It was a great offer, and I realize why it had to be done quickly. $250,000.00 for 100 busses...wow. Considering they need 198 busses for the 11,000 people who registered/wanted on the list, those 100 busses will transport what...6,000. I missed the bus, but at least HP put out a great offer to give those lucky ones a ride.

Are you catching the Huffington Post Bus? If you are, I will be at the Port authority around 4:40am to get the subway to Citifield where it leaves from. Let me know. I need a partner to take pictures with! carolmdangelis@hotmail.com

While we are grateful for the generous offer of transportation to the Sanity Rally, we were deeply disappointed to find out that they are only leaving from Flushing, NY at 5:30 am. For those of us in NJ, this is quite an obstacle!! Any chance of scheduling some buses from our side of the Hudson?

If you are looking for people in your area to travel with for the rally, you should run a search on Facebook as quite a few people are using that to organize.
